The Garden Plot topic for Podcast Board DIS'ers: Share your successes and challenges!

Making a BJ's run later and then I'm stuffing some peppers for the grill. Jalapeno, ancho. Will be using sausage meat among other things.

Mmmm that sounds good. :)I've never made peppers on the grill except in kabobs. Do you precook the sausage before stuffing and what is ancho?
:banana:Just picked our first pepper. Excuse the dirt, I dropped it. Rosemary in the background.

Getting there. A lighter shade of green

Just took inventory. Had to pick and trash a squash. Got mushy at the end. The rest is still going strong. Will trim and eat some lettuce this week and the tomatoes are also getting a lighter shade of green.

Amazing the lessons learned so far with the garden. We tried the square foot method of planting. Just a bit too close for the squash, zucchini, and cucumbers.

Thanks, it's small but doing well.

The eggplant is the chinese version, Ichiban. It doesn't grow very large at all, it is long and thin unlike the italian version.

Thanks Andrea. I'll need to remember this for next year.

Hi Deb. I'll decase and pre-cook the ground sausage. Mix with some cooked white rice, a little cream of mushroom soup to bind. I'll also add some shredded cheese to the mix as well as topping with it after stuffing.

The ancho is a staple pepper in Mexican cooking used in mole' sauces. It's the largest chile pepper and I find it perfect for stuffing. Mild heat. Here is the one I'm almost ready to pick.

I cut all the peppers I stuff length wise, core, olive oil, season then stuff. I'll post pics this week. Never got around to stuffing today.

It's hard not to lose things sometimes Jen. Vegetables hide!

Squash, zuc, and cukes, all need wander room. I have a bit of room and still trip around them. :)

I might not plant pumpkins next time, they are crazy! So are the cucumbers or any of the vine plants.

I have found little tiny black and green worms eating my broccoli and cauliflower! YUCK! Anyone have a good "natural" remedy, other than had removing? BLECH!!!!

More protein.

Sorry Jen. I'm not good with knowing what pesticides to use or if it's to late to salvage. Maybe use a hose to wash off if they are just surface critters.

Boil the heck out the heads. :yay:

you're being mean to the worms.

Spinosad (available under a bunch of brand names). I use Captain Jack's Deadbug. Or Bacillus thuringiensis, which is under a bunch of names, too, like Thuricide. Both organic.

Thanks Mindy! I read a combo of water, salt, and flour may work. I figured I'd try it. Sprayed the heck of of them. I'll try the other stuff too.

Mindy to the rescue. :cool1:

Not much DIS or garden time the last two days. Work is taking up a bit of my time as I'm expecting it will for the balance of July.

At least I had a nice garden cuke and red onion salad tonight. With julienne jalapenos.

We were waiting for our broccoli get more full. Too late, something at the tops of the plants!

Cabbage was all leaves, no head starting to form yet. But it looks like something at all the centers of the plants!

The romaine had started to grow tall, leaves coming out every three inches. Something ate most of those leaves.

Peas are tangled and I am not finding many peapods any more.

The only thing that still looks good are parsley, chives, basil and rosemary.
I think it is time to tear everything else out of our science experiment!

What is a good mid-season crop?

Toward the end of the very short broccoli season we got those gross worms. The minute I saw them ewww  that was it. Off with the broccoli heads!

Summer squash is coming in faster than I can cook it. You might try it but be prepared. It's a garden hog taking up most of one of our sections.

We had a few of these double freaky looking squashes.

Yesterday I picked a few cukes and tomatoes.

The basil is bolting. I've been using it but thought I'd wait to have enough for pesto. Maybe I waited too long:confused3

This pumpkin, green a few weeks ago is now turning orange

I can't seem to beat the animals to the berries:mad:

I pulled out all the broccoli and cauliflower. Those worms were nasty.

Did you use any bug spray? I haven't seen many bugs yet, but I did have a tomato half eaten this weekend. Just one that was nice and ripe. The deer are picky I guess and can reach over the fence.

Yesterday we pulled out the cabbage and broccoli, all eaten by something. Same with the lettuces that had mostly bolted. Peas are dried up up, but we ate a lot of them.

Nothing left in the garden except parsley, chives, basil and rosemary.

I am thinking of just planting more peas. Any other ideas?

I have a pepper that is growing nicely. And a bunch of flowers that should turn into peppers. Here's hoping the pepper plants don't 'get the axe' while I'm in Chicago this weekend...
