The Fishy Bagel Debate

Last night in chat was quite strange; well, stranger than usual. Kevin started talking about eating fishy bagels and it got me thinking. How many of you eat lox on your bagel? I don't know anyone here in NJ who does so. I even asked at work today and couldn't find one person.

To be fishy or not to be fishy. That is the question.

I'm really more of a fishstick eater - and less of a fish connoisseur, so salmon is the last fish I want near me......or my bagel.

I work in a predominantly Jewish area and it is very popular to eat bagels and lox. My sister-in-law is also Jewish and when she would have family over for breakfast or lunch she would have it. I've never tried. I'm a cream cheese girl

Um.. sometimes. But I don't want it put on at the bagel store, I like being able to control the lox/cream cheese ratio. Then again, I usually want to scrape off half the cream cheese they put on, anyhow. =)

When my dad's last wife was still alive, she would always host her family's Yom Kippur break fast meal, and the lox and cream cheese were stacked high on the bagels. Maybe it's a northern NJ thing?

There seems to be some confusion on Miss Nikki's part.

The conversation started when Nikki announced that "she had never heard of putting fish on bagels" and that "no one in NJ eats bagels and lox".

So in order for the poll to be an accurate representation of the conversation held in Chat....the poll should read HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF BAGELS AND LOX.

I know many, many people that dont care for it and that is certainly understandable.

You could wrap grapfruit in chocolate and $20 bills and I'm still not eating it.

But...please first let Nikki know whether you have ever HEARD of bagels and lox and then let her know if you actually like it.

I did not eat bagels with lox and cream cheese until I met and later married into a Jewish family. No longer married to him, I still enjoy lox.

I like both hot and cold smoked salmon.


My Dutch heritage has me eating pickled herring, either in sour cream or a vinegared wine sauce. Yum!

Hi everyone, my first post on the podcast boards! I normally lurk around. You guys all seem so nice here

Anyways, I love bagels and lox and so do both of my kids and we're born and raised here in NJ. My husband on the other hand thinks lox is revolting.

I was just looking at the Delish menus and pictures and can't wait to get some bagels on our next trip down in April. We have awful bagels down here in Southern NJ.

I was asked what I was having for snack. I replied "bagels and lox".

Yes, I have heard of bagels and lox. I love it, but nobody around here sells lox.

I love bagels and lox! I'm not from the NY or NJ area so it's not something I grew up on. But I love lox (and cream cheese) on a bagel.

I'm a bit of an anomaly. I love having lox with bagels, but I don't like the standard cream cheese schmear with it.

Then again, I'd be a detriment to my Jewish heritage if I didn't eat lox. Right?

The only way I like cream cheese is when it's doctored up enough to not taste like plain cream cheese. I like it when it's sweetened up in cheesecake or other spreads.
