The Family That Runs Together...Vacations Together-A May 2012 PTR *5/12

Today is a great day, only because... I've reached double digits on my countdown!!!:woohoo::cool1::cheer2:

99 days left!!!

It's kind of hard to believe that I am down to a little over 3 months until I'm back at Walt Disney World. There's still so much left for me to do, the first being book a room! Then, making sure I'm ready for the 5K.

Even though I'm not yet ready for the trip, I can't help but thinking about all the fun I'm going to have in 99 days. Eating dole whips, being whipped around on Everest, watching Wishes on Main Street....It's all so close, yet so far away, still.

Seeings as the main focus of my Disney trip is participating in the Expedition Everest 5K Challenge, I figured I should probably talk about what I’m doing to prepare for the race. Last year, Alex registered us at the end of March, and I had 7 weeks to go from no experience to race-ready.

And after returning home from the race, I completely stopped running. Only put on my running shoes once, for a measly 1 mile run….

This year, I’m giving myself much more time to train in hopes that I can beat last year’s time, and become a better runner.

I decided to use the same program that I used last year, because I knew it worked, and I felt like it fit my fitness level.

So, at the beginning of January, I started:

Image1-3.jpg

The Couch to 5K Running Plan. If anyone wants to see what the full schedule of the program consists of, it’s at this website:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

It’s a 9 week, 3 days a week, walk/run program that slowly builds up stamina and strength, beginning with short bursts of jogging and finishing with non-stop running. Last year, I only made it to Week 5, which wasn’t bad, but I’m setting myself up for higher results this go round.

I’m taking the program really slowly and repeating each week twice, just to make sure I have mastered each stepping stone before increasing my runs.

Since this is my 4th week running, I’m only on my second attempt at Week 2, and I’m a little disappointed in my progress so far. Having done this before, I’d have thought the first few weeks would be a breeze, but it’s not so. I think a lot of it has to do with the crazy weather we’re having here in Florida.

It’s been nuts! One day it’s 75 degrees, the next day it’s raining, the following day it’s 50 degrees, and then it’s back to 70. I never know when I get up in the morning if I need my coat or my shorts! :confused3

And then the other factor is that I know I still have a ton of time before the race. Some mornings I get up, and kind of say to myself, “I’ve got months before I have to worry about the race, no big deal.”

But, I think I’m going to remedy that by signing up for some local 5Ks. There’s one next month in Pensacola (about 40 minutes away) that makes runners go over all three of the city’s bridges. It sounds like a lot of fun, and it would get my butt in gear. :yay:

As for the other members of the trip, they seem to be a little more confident with their exercising.

Alex has to maintain a certain degree of fitness for his career. (The military does mandatory Physical Fitness tests.) Plus, for a few more weeks, at least, DH works at a gym, so he’s always teaching fitness classes and using the equipment. He was also was in charge of cross country events and was always creating 5K courses, so this race is nothing out of the ordinary for him.

He is participating because he loves Disney and enjoys the thrill of the scavenger hunt.

In fact, he’s actually been looking at a half marathon training schedule. One of his coworkers participated in this year’s Disney World Half Marathon, and they sent him a PDF of what they used to prepare for the race.

Alex loves runDisney, and he really wants to do one of their Half Marathons one day. (In addition to doing the Coast to Coast Challenge.) I’m sure as the year progresses, he’s going to start seriously considering the Wine and Dine Half Marathon in November.

Meaning, the Expedition Everest 5K is a walk in the park for him. (Ohhhh, the ridiculousness of that pun…..)

My mother has been walking everyday on her treadmill, working herself up to a 16 minute/mile walk. (That’s the time limit for runDisney races.) She said she’s going to try and start running if she has the walking down pat, but she’s like me and is taking it slow.

Thankfully, for both her and I, it’s still very early, and there’s plenty of time to improve.

That’s all of our training routines. I’m going to try and post a weekly or bi-weekly update on my progress, because I find making myself accountable helps tremendously. I don’t want to sign on to the DISboards and have to post, “Well, I only ran once this week, and it wasn’t even the amount the C25K told me to do.”:sad2:

I'm so glad your going to record your progress. Then I won't feel like the only one in the whole world doing it and we can help keep each other motivated and accountable :thumbsup2
I'm so happy to hear you did so well on the run last year without having finished c25K!! it gives me hope that i will be able to do this run. I don't doubt myself really but it still puts my mind at ease. I've been training now since mid Nov. but I've never been active so felt i was best to start immediately. lol. I'm very happy with my progress so far.

Keep on pushing through - the first few weeks seem to be the biggest killers hey?? I found around week 4 was where i started finding it easier but then it got hard again now that I'm at the really long runs!!!

:woohoo: on being in DOUBLE digits!!! Your trip will be here before you know it!

Good luck with the Couch to 5k programme - I'm sorry to hear that it's not going as well as last time but like you said the weather doesn't help! Hopefully signing up to the 5ks will help.

I'm going to start Zumba this week - need to up my exercise level though will prob be dying by the end of the session! :rotfl:

Some of those long runs are brutal! I was terrified the first time I came up on the 20 minute straight run, and even this time around, I'm a little nervous.

Zumba sounds like fun, I know it's really popular where I live, but I'm just too uncoordinated to do it. :rotfl:
I hope the next 95 days fly by! I'm so impatient to be at WDW!

I have a few things to report on since my last update.

The most exciting piece of news is….

We booked our rooms!:woohoo::cool1::thumbsup2

Finally, right? This past Friday, while Alex and I were at my parent’s house, we called Disney and made our reservations at All Star Sports. I’m still pretty happy with Sports. It’s sort of comforting already knowing where we’ll be staying.

And the second coolest piece of news I have is:

I cancelled my Teppan Edo reservation this morning to…

coral_reef_500.jpg

Coral Reef!!!!:goodvibes

I was talking to Alex yesterday, and we threw around the idea of him being able to try a new restaurant while he’s at WDW. I could see where he was coming from, and besides, I hated our 1:30 reservation time for Teppan Edo. So, this morning I checked the Dining Reservations page and saw that there was a Coral Reef opening at 12:55pm. :wizard:

That was a much more reasonable time for the three of us, and I knew this was Alex’s kind of restaurant. In fact, I’m really excited to tell him about our change of plans when he gets home from work today.

You see, Alex loves seafood, but he doesn’t eat it very often. (The last time he had some was on our cruise in October.) And he loves Lobster Ravioli, which Coral Reef just so happens to serve during lunch.

Knowing my mom and I, we’ll probably end up with the Caeser Salad or the Steak, and that’ll suite us just fine.

I think one of the greatest parts of planning a Disney vacation is creating something that you know the other members of your party are going to enjoy. I can already imagine Alex’s happiness when we’re in his favorite park (Epcot) eating a nice seafood-filled lunch. :cloud9:

Come on 95 days, I need you to start crawling by a little faster!

As for my running, I began Week 3 of the C25K program on Saturday, and it was the first time I felt like I was making progress.:yay: I actually think repeating Week 2 hurt me, because my muscles felt great running 3 minutes at a time. For the first time since I started running, I caught a glimpse of what I felt when I ran the EE5K last summer. It gave me a huge morale boost, and I’m actually excited to train again this afternoon. Although, my legs are still a little sore, so I’m sure today’s run is going to be rough. But I’ll just keep think about that 5 Year Anniversary Medal, and it’ll keep me going. Nothing says motivation like the thought of a runDisney medal around my neck.

I want to start writing about my day to day plans soon, but this week is going to be pretty busy. My family is coming over for SuperBowl Sunday (we’re HUGE football fans) so I have to prepare for that, plus I have a bunch of odds and ends on my To-Do list that I need to get done. But hopefully soon I can get back to my trip and start daydreaming even more about being at Disney.

Speaking of football…Alex checks the Disney store every once in awhile to see the new pins, and he came upon this yesterday:
Image2-3.jpg

Image1-4.jpg

A New England Patriot Vinylmation!!!!!!?!!!!!! My two favorite things combined!

Normally, I stay pretty strong and don’t succumb to buying Disney souvenirs at home. (I didn’t even order a Lion King Vinylmation, and that’s my favorite movie!) But I just might have to break down and buy one of these. Especially if they win the chamionship this weekend.

Besides, Alex is the one who checks the mail, and who doesn’t love opening up their box and seeing Disney mail??? It’d be a win for both of us!

Enjoy the ressie!! We're not huge seafood fans so id be like you and get a steak and dd is not a meat eater so she'd get a caesar salad. lol. Actually dh is even less a fish fan than i am so i guess that's why we don't even bother booking somewhere like that!! rofl:rotfl2:

I'm glad your running is better this week:thumbsup2 I'm in a bit of a down slump so I'm taking a break week i think. We'll see for sure though.

i wonder what the medals will look like this year?????:confused3 I really liked the compass idea so i'd really like one of those but i'm sure they will come up with something awesome even if it's not a compass.

That's a GREAT vinylmation!! I'm sad to say they would most likely NOT have a Saskatchewan Roughrider one :( But dd is thinking she MIGHT be interested in getting a few. not sure what kind. Wonder what a tink one would look like since that's my fave character. lol.

:woohoo: on booking your rooms!! How exciting that everything is coming together and thumbs up on getting a reservation for Coral Reef. That was one restaurant that got cut from our plans - am looking forward to seeing how you find it :thumbsup2

Wow 95 days - they'll pass by before you know it!! Glad to hear that the running is back on form and what an AMAZING vinylmation! I'm not a fan of them but absolutely love this one! :goodvibes

I hate seafood, but Alex loves it, so I figured I could suffer through one restaurant for him. I really love aquariums, though, so I figured I will enjoy the restaurant's atmosphere, at least.

I'm sure the medals are going to look great. But I think all the runDisney awards are cool, so I am pretty easy to please when it comes to that. :confused3

I'm so relieved that we have our rooms booked. All that is left is for us to buy our tickets and everything will be purchased. :woohoo: Hard to believe that my trip is coming together so quickly.
Alex finally convinced me the other day to buy the Patriot Vinylmation. And then I ended up buying 2 more mystery ones!:lmao:

HI! I wanted to come over and check out your PTR. Your plans are looking good! It's a relief to have that resort chosen, and booked, isn't it? My problem is that even after I book it, I second guess it for the next two months!

I love all your ADRs---We've eaten at all those except the one in Italy. AND, I wouldn't feel bad about Kona twice! We love Kona! It's probably our favorite non-character restaurant. :thumbsup2

Hey hon, I finally made it over!

Love the ADR's and I think I would have changed Teppan Edo to Coral Reef too...though we love both, our last visit to the Coral Reef was in 2010 and it ended up being the best meal of our trip!

Loving all your plans so far and I love that you'll be getting a few mom days all to yourselves!

Thanks for joining in! I have this weird goal about trying to stay at as many Disney resorts as possible, so I'm a little bummed about our All Star Sports reservation, but it'll be a new place for my mom, at least. I really want to stay at a moderate, but Alex and I have some very tentative trips planned for the future, and if I'm just patient I'll get my moderates then. :rotfl:

Thanks for coming over! I'm really excited about Coral Reef. I love trying new restaurants out, and I think Alex is going to love it. Plus, I didn't feel sad about skipping Teppan Edo.

I'm unbelievably excited about my mother/dauther part of the trip. I'm not sure when I will ever be able to have 3 days at Disney with just my mom and me again, so it's sort of a once in a lifetime oppurtunity. Plus, growing up with 2 brothers, the selfish part of me is going, "I get my mom all to myself, where we can eat, drink, and not have a care in the world." :thumbsup2
Alex is pretty jealous that I'm getting extra Disney days, but I think he'll survive.:lmao:

A quick real-life update before I talk a little bit about the May trip.

After the depressing game last night, I figured I could use a little cheering up, and what’s a better pick-me-up than talking about Disney.

My family came over yesterday afternoon to watch the Superbowl. We all love the NFL, and my team was actually in the championship, so it was kind of a big deal.

I had some Funfetti cupcakes in the pantry, so I decided to jazz them up a bit:

Image8-2.jpg

I considered it a major improvement, but my brother didn’t see it that way. :rotfl:

Speaking of brother, here he is:

Image1-5.jpg

With that perpetual teenage look. That, “Gosh, what do you want?!” glare. Anyone who watches The Middle on ABC can get a great glimpse of what both my brothers are/were at 17 by watching Axle. It’s like I am staring into a window of my childhood when I watch that show!

The great thing about having his attitude-self at my house was that he took a peek at our Vinylmation collection, and he talked to my mom about which ones he liked/disliked. Which, in turn, gave my mom some useful information. She now knows that she’s getting Isaac a souvenir Vinylmation in May, and she has a good idea of which ones he’d want. Now we all have one less thing to ponder about while on our trip.

Here’s a quick picture of my dad and Alex grilling our dinner.

Image2-4.jpg

If you happen to look at the back of Alex’s shirt, you’ll notice the number 98. That would be his Disney Cruise Line shirt. (He wore a navy colored shirt out of support for me.) It’s become a proven fact that we can’t go one day without incorporating Disney into our lives. :goodvibes

And, last but not least, here is my mom and I:

Image7-2.jpg

Pay no attention to the bulletin board behind me that’s decked out in various Disney items. That’s where my 2011 Expedition Everest medal and my pin lanyard hangs. And where I post my trip countdown. Can’t forget about the countdown….

When we took the picture, I told my mom that we were practicing for May, when we’d be posing for the camera quite often. She just laughed and said, “Okay.”

We all enjoyed quality family time; I just wish the Patriots could have won against the Giants. Bleck! However, I told Alex that the Patriots were just keeping me in mind, because if they had won, I would’ve had to spend 18 dollars on the Superbowl Vinylmation. They were just allowing me to save my money for the trip. :lmao:

I suppose I’ve rambled enough about my real life; I need to get back to what this report’s about.

Our May trip!

In order for me to post my day by day plans, I have to start from the very beginning, otherwise I’ll feel disoriented and forgetful. And we would not want that…

Amusingly enough, the beginning of the trip is the only part that I’m not sure about. I keep thinking about different options and ways I could improve it, but I think I’m 99% sure now on what we’re doing.

Alex and I, at the moment, are planning on getting up early on the morning of Wednesday, May 2nd. We’re a little worried about Alex’s work schedule making our departure harder than it has to be, because right now we’re in the dark about the upcoming months. In the middle of March, Alex will be switching to a new area of his job, which means we have not the slightest clue about his hours or his days off. Right now, he works 4:30am to 1:30pm, but there’s a strong possibility he could be working nights here soon. The good thing about the military is that it never gets complacent.()

Because of the unknown hours, I can only go by what I’m hoping, which is that Alex will be home from work by the afternoon of the 1st and will be able to wake up at a reasonable hour on the Wednesday. If he is, in fact, working the night shift, then our departure will probably be midday, putting us about 5 hours behind where I’m hoping to be.

No matter when we head out, we will be getting on this:

Image9.jpg

(I-10)

And driving until about Lake City, where we’ll start our way South-bound on:

Image10.jpg

(I-75)

The drive up til that point is so boring. Aside from passing my former college town (Tallahassee) there is nothing but trees and pavement to look at. It’s the worst part of the drive, in my opinion, because it’s 4 hours of NOTHING. :rolleyes1

Once we get on 75, though, we’ll be paying attention to traffic and signs. That road is always busy, due to the fact that people going to Orlando, to Tampa, and to Miami all have to drive on there.

Thankfully, the road normally empties out when we get on:

Image13.jpg

The good ‘ol Florida Turnpike. Also known as Construction Central. In the 10 years I have traveled on that stretch of road, there has never NOT been construction occurring.

The only cool thing about the Turnpike is that the rest area and gas station exits are on the left hand side. Mixes the monotony up.

And to finish off the trip, we will get off on:

Image4-3.jpg

(I think? It’s some road. I know 528 goes straight to Orlando, but honestly, I’m normally asleep by this part of the trip, so I never actually see where we turn off.)

After a total of 8 hours in the car, we’ll make it to Alex’s parent’s house, which is about 20 minutes from Cocoa Beach.

That night and the following day, we’ll visit with his family and watch our dog, Buster, get spoiled silly.

Image11.jpg

This part of the trip should prove interesting, because it’ll be where some of my set-in-stone plans gets potentially washed away.

That will be because Alex’s two sisters are wanting to participate in the Expedition Everest 5K race.

Which is great. Promotes healthy living, gives them something to strive for, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The issue is….they don’t plan.

And they don’t exactly comprehend that I do plan.

Everything.

Down to the minute.

So, I just know they are going to start asking, ‘So, do you wanna hang out before the race?”

“Where are you staying? Maybe I can get a room there, too.”

“Do you wanna have lunch the following day?”

“Where can we meet up before the race?”

“Can we run with you guys?”

I almost have a panic attack everytime I think about it. I’ve tried to get Alex to explain to them that we have very concrete plans, and that if they want to join us, they’ll have to work around what I’ve set up. But they’re not exactly listening. And they won’t even start thinking about what they should do until a few weeks beforehand.

Causing me to be one stressed out woman.

I'm not trying to be mean and not give them any leeway, it's just I have been planning this trip for so long, that I kind of feel like they should meet me halfway. I'm open to making adjustments to my plans, just don't wait until the day before and EXPECT me to. That's not how I operate....

For the time being, I just don’t think about it. In fact, I have been going long periods of time forgetting that they even want to run in the 5K. It’s just easier for me to go about my plans and not stress about making everyone happy.

My main goal is for Alex and I to have a great time at the EE Challenge, and to give my mom a great vacation. That’s been my goal for months upon months, and I have made that very clear to everyone.

Nonetheless, that Thursday before Disney is probably not going to be a pleasant one. By the 4th I am going to need some Disney magic to cheer me up.

And as for my mother, she’s going to wake up on the 4th, get my brother off to school, feed the cats and dog, and then hit the road no later than 7:00am. She’ll take the same route as us, except she will get on I-4 and drive straight to All Star Sports.

The lucky duck.

The worst part about Alex and I's part of the drive is that we pass about a hundred billboards advertising Disney attractions and special events, and all we can do is wave goodbye to them as we pass. It’s like waving a cake in front of a kid three days before his birthday. “Look what you’re going to get! Looks pretty cool, yeah? You’re just going to have to wait and see if it is!”

It’s cruel…:sad2:

Well, that’s our traveling plans. For some reason, I’m not exactly a fan of it (maybe it’s the possible drama lurking in the shadows) but until we know Alex’s work schedule it’ll have to do.

Next time I’ll get into the good stuff….arriving at Disney!

I'm so sorry that your team lost yesterday....your cupcakes look delicious tho!!

I am a planner too so I can completely understand the anguish you must be feeling! Stick to your plans hon, it's your vacation and don't forget that! Can't wait to hear more:goodvibes

Ugh that Super Bowl was a joke yesterday, wasn't it! I'm not a big football fan, but I do like the Patriots (:lovestruc Tom Brady!) and I was hoping the stupid Giants wouldn't beat them again. But as soon as the Giants got those 2 points to start the game, I knew it was a bad sign. :sad2:

Your travel day looks...well, stressful! Lots of driving! I had no idea you were so far from Orlando, I assumed you could just pop over to Disney whenever you wanted! I always forget Florida is so big, because CT is so tiny, you can get anywhere you want in an hour!

Haha, I'm like you, I plan a lot, and when people who don't try to change things around, I panic! I'm trying to get better with being more lenient with my Disney planning, because I used to be psychotic with it, but still, I need to have a basic itinerary!

Hi, Alicia! I finally found my way over here from your TR, and am so glad I did.

First, I can't wait to read all about the EEC! And second, I hope that your Mom really does have a wonderful time. I think it's so awesome that you and her are going to be able to spend time together in the parks!!

Hey! I totally missed that you started a PTR or I would have been here sooner! I'm so glad to know that someone else (other than myself) has caught the runDisney addiction bug! My DF and I will also be running EEC again this year and hopefully this time I can meet you too instead of just your DH! EEC is so much fun and I can't wait for the 5 year anniversary medal. I got the 15th anniversary donald medal for the half this year and love it!

Also, I love your PTR! Your writing style is so fun because I feel like I'm talking to you rather than reading... plus, you remind me of myself with your resistance to people changing plans at the last minute... that happens to me all the time and people just don't get why I panic

I hope your able to find a middle ground with the sisters. We are absolute HOGS with our Disney trips!!! I mean our next trip is like 19 days and i would STILL find it hard to meet up with someone or take time out to do something other than what i have planned :goodvibes so i can totally relate to that.

so, how long of a drive will it be exactly?? i WISH we could drive!! Airfare is SO expensive from up here in the frigid north :headache:

Can't wait to see more :)
