The faceless children take a top-secret trip to WDW...

So, do you want the bad news first, or the good news? I always like to start with the bad news, even though it can really bring down my joy about the good news. But we'll start with the bad news anyway.

So, I've been saying how Syd has really sensitive skin, right? Well, apparently she's not the only one. Now that it's been hot the last few days, and we didn't have the air conditioning on until yesterday (until my mom got home from her vacation, I hate the air! :rotfl2:) J.J. has broken out in a GIANT eczema rash all over his entire body. I mean all over. Face, feet, and everything in between. I used to get eczema pretty badly (still do, sometimes) so I'm sure that's what it is. My mom said mine started around 3 too. So, not good. He's exhausted all day because he's up itching all night. And it's just not pretty, it looks like he has some horrible disease. It's better today, but I'm not sure what this means for disney. I don't want him to be covered in a rash and tired the whole time! :headache: Mine doesn't flare up too bad at disney, so hopefully he'll be okay, with going in and out of the air conditioning all day. We'll just have to see, I guess!

On to the good news. I wanted to get out of the house yesterday so I went shopping for some sewing I'm going to be doing (more on that later), and we stopped at the thrift store...where we stumbled across a dinosaur costume (Okay, it could probably also be a dragon, but it's certainly close enough) for Sydney for MNSSHP for $1.49. Amazing! DH wants to put some kind of a bow on top, since he doesn't like when people think she's a boy, but we'll figure that out later. $1.49! Now I just need to find a deal like that for the boy, and we'll be in business. Here's our little ladybug modeling her costume. I think it will fit perfectly in September!

Soon to come: My sewing project, the stuff I got from the disney store when my brother did over the phone shopping for me, and maybe a few pictures from my mom's trip to disneyland!

What an adorable costume!!!! I love it. I'm sure it would be very easy to put a big red bow on top.

So sorry to hear about J.J.'s skin problem. That is not fun at all. Madison has what the doctor calls "chicken skin" on the backs of her arms. It's really not that bad and it doesn't make her uncomforable. It's way worse in the winter, so we use extra heavy-duty lotion on it.

OMG! That's just the cutest dinosaur!!!

What size is JJ? I might have an extra Woody costume. I picked up a costume and hat at a garage sale for $1.50! The bad news is I had just purchased a brand new Woody hat from the disney store online for $12!! D'oh!! Anyway, the used costume and hat are a little worn but perfect for packing! I'll hand them over to you if you want. I think the costume is size 3/4 which fits a little snug for a 4.

I think it will be pretty easy to attach a bow too.

I'm sorry about his skin problem too! I hope I can clear it up soon. He's very practical, so at least he doesn't have a problem with me putting cream on it. It's just that it's worst on his face, because I can't cover his face up with clothing like I can the rest of his body and he just keeps scratching at it. Skin problems are no fun, and I know it's my fault that he has them because he got them from me! Darn, because I really like to pass the buck on these things...:rolleyes1

Too bad DH is sticking to his guns about wanting to go as Ellen's Energy Adventure (I've tried to get out of it multiple times already...I think it's a great idea, I'm just not into having to buy costumes) or I would totally take you up on that! Thanks for the offer though, it's really sweet of you! :flower3:

That is a crazy deal that you got though! Maybe I'm going to have to scope out garage sales...J.J. really loved playing dress-up with his cousins and I'm thinking I'll have to get him some costumes for his birthday or the holidays this year.

Hey!I am glad that you got a trip in under your belt and everything went smoothly!
AWWW I am so sad to hear about baby boy's skin.. I get heat rashes too! I say just give him oatmeal baths..take a wet washcloth with you so you can "wipe him down" periodically and use hydrocortosione(I know I spelled that wrong) and he should be ok.
Way to go on the costume find..it is soo cute! putting a bow on it should be easy epscially since you can sew.

I forgot about your theme! Where there no cowboys in the making of Energy??
I'll be on the lookout for Dino costumes in consingment shops when I go. What is JJ going to be? A dino too?

Yeah, J.J.'s going to be a dinosaur too. If you could keep an eye out for me, that would be amazing! Thanks so much!

Looks like you had a great trip! I love having the mini trips to work out kinks for Disney. :goodvibes

My DD has a bad case of eczema--I can completely relate to the struggles. We have prescription strength steroid (the strongest she is allowed to have) and we added Zyrtec this last go around to have. For her case, it is flairs up by allergies and heat. Needless to say, it is on my mind too!

Such a cute Dinosaur! The bow will be adorable on the costume. :)

Looking forward to seeing the sewing projects!! popcorn::

:cool1: for the good deal on the dinosaur costume!!!! That is an incredible price!! Good job!

I am so glad that they did well on the flight. My kids have always been great fliers - right up until it is time to land. Then they have had ear trouble and meltdowns. I finally have a solution to this though - lollipops! They keep them swallowing and are allowed through security.

All the pictures from your trip are so cute. It looks like the kids had a great time!

I agree that it is difficult to interrupt your park time for naps, but it really helps keep the preschool set from meltdowns. We didn't have to do it every day, but I think DD4 took naps 4 of our 9 days. You will make it work!

I felt so bad for him! His skin cleared up, but we have the air conditioning on. Pretty much any time out in the heat and it flares up. Our pictures will be interesting this year if it's not under control!

Sewing project #1 coming up!

I brought Jay a lolipop, but he licked it and wouldn't suck on it. Of course, right? I'm thinking maybe some sort of gummy candy this time.

I think naps will be essential for our sanity. I just didn't want to admit it!

So, maybe a week ago I figured out how to sew diaper covers from old wool sweaters. I know, wool sounds hot, right? But the thing is that disposables and normal cloth diapers have plastic (or PUL in the case of cloth, it's a laminate) as their waterproof layer, so that's REALLY hot, and wool breathes. I think what I read is that on a 90 degree day, after 15 minutes in the heat, inside a disposable the temperature is 102, in your typical PUL-lined cloth diaper the temperature is 101, and in a diaper with a wool cover the temperature is 96. So it's still hot, but since it lets air in it's cooler. I explained it to DH like this, and I think he got it...if you have a fleece sweater it's really warm in the winter, but if you go outside in the wind, the wind cuts right through it and you're cold. If you're wearing a raincoat out in the wind, you don't get cold. And wool is waterproof as long as you wash it with lanolin (its the stuff that makes wool waterproof on the sheep), so it's good for diaper covers. I had to try my hand at it, so I headed down to the thrift store and snapped up all of their merino wool and cashmere sweaters. Soooo soft. :lovestruc

Anyway, once I figured out that I could actually do it, and they worked great (I tend to think I'm craftier than I am, so I never know if I can actually do these things!) I needed to make some disney ones for our trip! We're a little over 10 weeks out so I don't anticipate a growth spurt, but I can always make more if something happens!

So with no further ado, here are the covers I made! I'm totally proud, so at least pretend they're pretty! :rotfl2:

And Syd modeling the little mermaid one. She picked it out this morning to wear!

I'll definitely be making one more, because I bought this fabric to make a skirt and bow for Syd's dinosaur costume:

so I might as well make a cover as well, since I only need some tiny scraps for it!

They were a lot of fun to make, so I hope they look pretty good like I think! :rotfl: Me and my seam ripper became good friends, as I was tweaking my pattern, and I cut them all up and sewed them again and again, so they look a little rougher than one I would make now that I have a good pattern (and the fact that I have this sickness that I never bother to change my thread to the right color, or coordinate the velcro really...), but I'm pleased! It also means that I don't have to lug diaper cream everywhere to put on her at every change since her super sensitive skin responds really well to the airflow and it's just not necessary when she's in wool. Which is great for being out and about!

The diapers look great! So you will use these instead of any other the other diaper type systems? Or do you wear a cloth diaper under it?? sorry for the confusion! :confused3

Yay! I was like, is no one going to comment? I know they're not professional quality and they're a little stitched up, especially that mickey one, but I'm so proud, it's the first time I've done anything that complicated! :lmao:

They're just the cover. I have diapers to put underneath (they're just inserts, all stitched together like a rectangle and I lay them in the cover, and then just velcro the cover on her. Hopefully that makes sense. Once you just lay the diaper on the cover, it all goes on like a disposable. Then you just swap out the diaper part when it gets wet, and re-use the cover. The diaper part is actually topped with fleece so that they feel dry to baby even when they're wet. They're nice.) I know cloth diapers are super complicated if you don't use them, there are a million different kinds and all that! I think I was still totally confused until Jay was like, a year old!

Okay, I know no one asked, but I fixed up the diapers a little and took a picture that hopefully explains how they work. :rolleyes1

Here's a picture of the covers (you can see how the tabs are a little neater, and underneath is the diaper part.).

DSC01276.jpg

And then this is what I was explaining, how you just lay the diaper part in the cover. And then you'd just velcro it on the baby. Hope that explains it better!

DSC01277.jpg

I have tons of planning stuff to talk about, but I'm trying to spread it all out since I tend to have a million things and post them all at once, and then have nothing for the longest time. So Word is my friend as I type things out and save them! Hope you'll keep reading along!

I love the pink striped wool on the princess one. It just looks soft! I am so impressed that you made your own diapers (and that you are going to cloth diaper on vacation!) All of my kids have worn FuzziBunz, but I never used them on vacation unless we were staying with relatives.

I also really like the Disney Halloween fabric. It is absolutely perfect for MNSSHP!

YAY! Isn't the pink one the cutest? I need to find more sweaters like that! I love fuzzibunz, that fleece on the inside is so incredibly soft!

I've never cloth diapered on vacation before other than trips to relatives either. (I half-heartedly tried on our last trip to WDW but just ended up using disposables during the day and only cloth at night...and I may have even abandoned that by the end.) Syd's skin is just so sensitive that even a disposable leaves her feeling too wet and she gets rashy, so I figure it's worth it. I mean, we're going for 11 days, so her little bum would really be hurting by the end! So we'll see how it goes. I'm sure it will be fine!

I couldn't pass up that fabric. I was going to get it for something, anything, and then DH suggested that I "girly up" her costume with it. I think a skirt for the costume will be really cute, and I'm just going to make it a separate piece so that she can wear it on her own too!

The diapers covers are really cute! I love the princess one. I bet the people that gave away their old wool sweaters never thought they'd end up on a kid's butt!

Haha I know, right? As I was cutting up these cashmere sweaters I was just laughing about the fact that this totally expensive sweater was being destroyed to be used as a diaper! Bet whoever spent all that money on it didn't see that one coming! :lmao: On the plus side, I also can make pants from them, using the sleeves, so two for one. Best $2 I ever spent! ;)

Cute diaper covers!!!

Amanda

Thanks! I can't pass up anything disney, and since disney is hard to come by in diapers, it makes me totally happy that I can make my own! :woohoo: Sadly, it's true enough that when we used disposables for DS when we went to disney I spent more money to get the ones with mickey and minnie on them instead of just getting the store brand! I think I may have a problem...:rolleyes1

Very cute diaper covers! I read your post yesterday but didn't have time to comment! It's been a busy week.
