The Documentary Debate

Kevin is from Albany. For some reason, folks from that area of NY (Albany, Syracuse, Rochester) pronounce some things kinda funny. Suppliment-airy, compliment-airy, and so on. I went to college in Fredonia, NY and you would not believe how many element-airy education majors were in my dorm! :thumbsup2:confused3 It was very confusing for someone from Cleveland (where we say everything perfectly and have no accent at all ;))

But we compensate by adding unnecessary prepositions to our sentences. I'd elaborate but first I have to go see where my coat is at.

No way was I going to wade into this issue.

I almost didn't get married because I "corrected" my (now) wife on the "proper" pronunciation of "L'Enfant Plaza" (a metro stop in DC which is generally pronounced by the locals as "La Font" Plaza).

I don't understand, nothing wrong with that sentence. :confused3

Never end a sentence with a preposition. ie...at

Guess I should have inserted the sarcasm smilie! Being from Cleveland too though, I still don't see anything wrong with that sentence. Never say never. :teeth:

If you don't end the sentence with the preposition where are you supposed to move it to. :goodvibes

My fourth grade teacher would have responded to this by saying: "between the 'a' and the 't'."

I'm just saying....:rolleyes1

Waaayyy back in college, I had a terrific Spanish diction professor who taught me something I remember to this day about the way we pronounce words.

I went to college in Indiana, but I grew up in North Jersey. At school some people thought I had an accent :sad2:  (And even I will admit it was pretty striking back then...).
Anyway, I didn't clearly appreciate how differently commons words were pronounced until this class.
He wrote 3 words on the board: Mary, merry and marry, and said how many people in the room pronounce these 3 words differently? I thought duh! of course they are all pronounced differently. Yet I was one of only 2 people in the class of about 20 students to raise my hand!!!
Wow!

So ever since then I have had a better appreciation for the very different ways we all speak the same language! :)

And for the record, even without that "NY" accent- I still pronounce all 3 of those words completely different. How about you??

I'm not going to even comment on this discussion. I don't believe in accents especially ones from Jerzy. :D

You like potato and I like potahto, You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto, Let's call the whole thing off!

"Louis Armstrong"
