The Disney Dog Collar (MagicBand)

Huge non-issue for me. If I find it to be too restrictive, I'll remove it and put in in my bag, or attach it to a lanyard.

But you have presumably taken your child to Disney World and stood in line to see Cinderella. Why is it creepy for her to know your child's name when you have arranged the meeting? Is it less creepy to go to Disney, stand in line to meet Cinderella and she doesn't know your name? You can probably opt out, but I don't understand the thinking.
I kind of like the idea of Cinderella knowing my princess' name. It helps maintain the illusion that it is the same Cinderella that she met previously.

what about finger scans? will they be tied to it?
The finger scans will no doubt cease to exist.

Where did you find the information about the finger scans no longer exisiting with the MagicBand? If that is true then I love this idea even more :thumbsup2

What happens if it falls off and you lose it? I guess you could say the same thing for a current cards, but at least you can keep those in a secure location.

And what about kids? My 4 year old won't even keep her MNSSHP bracelet on, so I doubt she would wear this one.

Are they officially testing the bands yet?

I like the idea of the wristband. As far as current cards being secure, I have found and turned in at least one card each trip (usually 3-4 cards) during her past 3 trips. People lose those all the time. It isn't like I'm really looking for them. I just see them pick them up and give them to the nearest CM. I would want someone to do that for me if I lost mine. I wouldn't want the wrong person getting them.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the bands, is will I still be able to wear my cute Disney bracelets or will the band be in the way!

First of all OP, last time I checked a collar was something that went around your neck, not your wrist. If you're gonna criticize something prematurely, get your facts straight.

Second, how is this a creepy invasion of one's privacy? Disney is trying to design a system making vacation planning easier and more convenient, and not only that, designing a system that evenly spreads out crowds, making certain rides and attractions seem less congested. Basically, once again, they're trying to help YOU and cater to YOUR needs and wants in a vacation, and yet, people still want to criticize Disney for it...if it wasnt this, people would be complaining about something else, and go on and on about how "Disney owes me this".. be glad they're desigining such a system, and even if it means you're gonna have to wear a little bracelet, carry it in your purse/wallet, pocket, whatever....its gonna be a pretty nice deal i think.

and last...

Thank you for posting this, my thoughts exactly!!!

I don't trust that my credit card information would be secure. Also...I don't wear a watch because it feels restrictive so I can't imagine spending a day with the band on especially if it's hot or humid.

I feel the same way, don't want to wear a watch or any kind of bracelet it if is hot or humid. We also don't have our credit card info attached to our room key (card).

I like the idea of the wristband. Seems much more convenient. My question is just how easy are they to remove, because I have very fidgety little boys and I don't want to have to worry about them constantly messing with their bracelets and having them fall off.

My other concern is how does this work with fastpass? I am usually the fastpass runner. Under the new system, will I be able to get fastpasses for my whole family with just my bracelet? Or does this mean I'll have to remove the bracelets from everyone's arms and take them to the machine? That seems like a bit of a nuisance compared to me just holding a stack of cards in my little carrying case around my neck. I guess I could just wear all of the bracelets - that would funny to see.

I'm waiting to hear the alternatives they will offer to wristbands. I don't like the wristband idea for a few reasons.

1) I don't want to have something strapped to my wrist all day
2) I don't want them in all of our Disney family photos.
3) I fail to see how the wristband will be less bulky (layed flat or otherwise) in my pocket than the KTTW card that I was able to keep in my wallet.

The whole security issue them doesn't bother me one bit. It's the other things I've mentioned.

Dan

I first and foremost don't like wristbands for primarily the reasons Dan mentions above. These MagicBands are arguably slighlty better looking than a cheap carnival or hospital wristband - but those are designed so you can't take them off and they always must be seen. Worse, the MagicBands look heavier. Are there any videos of them being taken on and off? I sure hope they are removable. The NBC video stated they are phasing out the RFID cards. I'd much rather have a card to participate in FP+ than have a wristband. Why not offer the option? Maybe they will and NBC is misinformed and they will have an option that unobtrusively goes into a pocket or wallet.

A previous poster mentioned that the DCL does use RFID wristbands for children - but this is to ensure a level of iron clad safety to make sure the kids are not allowed to leave the clubs on their own or with the wrong adult. The purpose these wristbands and the tradeoffs of comfort and style for safety are different.

A few hours of market surveys would tell Disney that wristbands would be polarizing compared viable alternatives that would make FP+ work just fine. But they are pushing big wristbands. I'm sure a few people would love them. Some people like to weare their KTTW on lanyards too. I like mine in my wallet. If Disney is offering a bunch of designer wristbands -then they could offer *and promote* something that wasn't a wristbands. But they are promoting only wristbands. Why?

I think under the new system the idea is you book all your FP+ with your smartphone app. YMMV whether that is better than the old kind of FP. But you don't really need your MagicBands when you use the app, as they will be associated with your account. If you buy MagicBands and don't have smart phone with an app with access to wifi prior to being in the park or wherever, Disney has sort of indicated that there will be an alternative method to select your FP+. I could imaginge that selecting FP+ from menus on a smart phone app won't be a horrible long wait. But standing in line in a kiosk behind some other guest fumbling with the menus might be really long compared to a traditional FP machine (though traditional FP will not be available to FP+ people).

The wrist band system works quite well.

We enjoy staying at a group of indoor water park / hotels called "great wolf lodge". they are awesome, no room keys and and charge everything to the account. It would be quite nice to leave everything in the room safe and just go with the band.

Also, i see Disney making a fortune on specialty bands......charicters, seasons, movies, who knows!

You caught me. I tried to change the 'definitiveness' of my post quickly, but you busted me too quickly.

It should also be noted that I was apparently wrong.

How about just attaching the band to a belt loop or a bag. This should be more comfortable and a solution for kids who don't want to wear it

None of your info resides on the bracelet. The only data on the bracelet is a unique number identifying the bracelet. This number will be how they link your bracelet to your profile where your ticket , credit card, ADRs, FPs, and other info will live.

And you need to enter your PIN for every purchase

For those of you that think this is Big Brother watching you... Disney is has ALWAYS watched you. You are on camera almost every second of every day you are in Disney. They see your face, what you are doing, where you are going. What is the diferrence if they can see your name on a screen or your face?

I agree with PP if you are going to have Big Brother watching you (which we all do every day in one way or another) I want it to be Mickey Mouse :cool1:

So true if you have ever purchased anything using your KTTW card this is no different and with the PIN requirement seems actually more secure to me

None of your personal information will exist on the card. It will merely be linked to your profile in their system which will have your info, just as it does now. As with the current KTTW system, you will be able to opt in or out of charging priveledges.

I think they are cute and don't look uncomfortable at all. If they are only issued to resort guest and AP holders and you are dying to have one then stay on site. I know I know that many like it better staying offsite cheaper, more room, blah blah blah but WDW should not change their plans or parks based on offsite guest. I love the whole concept with this and I am pretty sure Disney thought long and hard before spending the money on this new program and they feel it what will work best for them and the majority of their guest.

Whether same-day FPs will exist or not is something that hasn't been divulged. That being said, you should be able to merely go to the app on your smartphone to schedule FPs or to a kiosk in the park. One assumes that you would not have to have all of the magic bands to schedule FPs (or anything else) at the kiosks because you would have previously linked all of your profiles.

No worries :goodvibes, I was just hopping they would do away with them, not becuase of the tracking for becuase some people cannot figure out how to put their finger on the scanner... or don't rememeber while finger they used.

Great Wolf Lodge is a water park -and I can see that wearing a waterproof RFID band might be attractive as opposed to putting my room key and credit cards in my swimsuit. But I don't usually walk around WDW in my swimsuit unless I am at the pool or a waterpark. So the tradeoff of the discomfort and fashion ick of wearing a wristband is not so compelling.
