The Disney College Program - Pros and Cons

...okay, now I'm confused - what's the difference? :confused3

CP is College Program, technically they call in an internship, but it's really not IMO. PI is Professional Internship, where you are actually in a field that relates to your major, such as a person who is in school to be a vet, can work in AK with the animals. They're much more competitive.

I was flat broke and I worked far more hours than that. I mean Ramen noodles broke, because I had car insurance and gas to pay for. They deduct rent from your check, and you live in a tourist trap making minimum wage. My first paycheck was under 2 dollars. It is like the company store. You enjoy the perks of free access to the parks, but of course you want to see universal (I had never been) and Seaworld. I could not afford the 50 bucks to get in. You want to go out to eat with your friends once in awhile. I was no way spending like crazy I was on a very tight budget. I left flat broke. Most of my roommates had their parents supporting them, and giving them gas and spending money, I did not.I was the living paycheck to paycheck and my car was on its last leg, it had 216K miles on it. I was praying it didn't break down. So save up before you go and hope to break even, this is not a money making deal or way to save up at ALL. Think how much a drink costs in orlando when you want a water.

This seems a little misleading. Of course your first paycheck was ridiculously small, most people have less than 20 hours on that week. Also, I don't know when you did your CP, but for those wondering, a car is really not necessary anymore. Even if you work extremely early, before the busses run, they will drive you, as long as you show them your schedule. Too bad they didn't do that when you were there, because if you were working that much and still barely scraping by, your car payments must have been through the roof.

A lot of people do come out of the CP broke, but just as many come out with a large sum of money. It's all about your spending and working habits. I habitually worked 48 hour weeks, four 12 hour shifts, and ate almost all of my meals in the park, which is obviously pretty expensive. I also went out to eat at Steak and Shake at least three times a month after work. My suitcases were filled with souvenirs as well. So, I broke about even, maybe had about $25 on my credit cards by the time I left. I also had no financial assistance what so ever, in fact, I sent money home to my family a few times.

I'm not sure why my school doesn't offer credit, other than maybe since it's a community college, they don't? Not sure.

Anyway, I stayed in Patterson Court and the apartments were very nice. It's a lot smaller than Vista Way and a lot nicer. I always joked that Patterson seemed like a retirement home compared to Vista, which was fine with me! I don't do parties.

That's still the stereotype :goodvibes Patterson Court as a retirement home, Vista Way (or by any of it dirtier nicknames;)) was the party place, and Chatham was somewhere in between. And The Commons were just plain crazy. :lmao: This obviously wasn't always the case, but you could see people really choosing their complexes based on that.

My daughter is finishing up her first CP on July 30. She has been with the program since January. As with any job, there have been some difficult days. However, the experience has been wonderful for her. She has had fun AND managed to save money. She is in Chatham in a one bedroom with a great roommate. This is the beginning of her journey with Disney. The goal is another CP, hopefully a PI, and then eventually full time. If anyone was ever born to be a Disney employee, it is my daughter. She has seen the good and bad side of the company and still loves it. I think it is a wonderful experience for college kids, but they need to go in realizing this is a JOB with a company that demands a LOT! (Many, many regular CMs refer to the WDWCP as the "slave trade," and with good reason, too.) If anyone wants more info, feel free to pm me.

kimmar067, there are definitely discounts for merchandise, food, and resorts, plus a tiny percentage on tickets. They also get 6 Main Gate admissions. If you want specifics, send me a message.

I did the CP from fall advantage '10 (june '10-january '11). I was in attractions, and got placed at the American Idol Experience at DHS. I lived in a 3 bedroom apartment in Patterson. And two years later, I am still living in Orlando and working at Disney.

I graduated from college right before doing my CP, so I was already finished with school and didn't have to worry about that. I applied for jobs back home towards the end of my CP, but did not get any, so when it all came down to it, I had a seasonal job at Disney and I decided to stay. I got part-time in February '11, and full-time in July '11, all in the same location. I have worked my way up the rankings of attractions, getting cross-trained in 3 other attractions in my area and counting, as well as becoming a trainer and a relief coordinator for the area.

As for the CP itself, I really enjoyed it. Patterson is really nice, although the rent is kinda expensive for what you get (I currently only pay maybe $30ish/month more and I have my own bedroom, not a shared bedroom). But it was nice to not really worry about it, since it was automatically deducted from your paycheck! I had a car, so I rarely used the bus system. Sometimes I did when I didn't feel like driving, but the majority of the time it was so much nicer to be able to drive wherever and whenever I wanted.
As for my roommates, I found them through facebook. There was a group for everyone doing the CP Fall 2010, and once we got accepted and figured out arrival dates, roommate surveys/etc started popping up. Out of the 5 other roommates, I am still really good friends with 3 of them. I actually live currently with one of them, had another sleep on my couch for a few weeks while she worked her seasonal hours, and the other is moving back down here to go to grad school at UCF in the fall! The other 2, we don't talk to. They seemed nice online, but we just didn't mesh.

As for money... yes, disney pay sucks. It still sucks, even as full-timer. But I'm pretty decent at budgeting my money. When I was a CP, I spent a little more as I originally thought this was my only time to do this stuff, so I ate at some of the more expensive disney restaurants/etc. I didn't party that much either. I did go to Jellyrolls alot with my roomies, but cover is free! lol

Hours-wise, I was in a pretty good attraction. Idol closes after the finale show, which was at 7pm every night. The latest I worked was 8:15. Meaning, I could still have a social life after work! Especially during the summer when its open later, I would spend my nights at MK plenty. I got close to 40 hours every week, sometimes more, sometimes less. But my roommate worked at All Stars front desk, and she got 50+ hours usually, mostly till 1am. It all depends where you work!

I had a great CP experience, but just like everything, some people have great experiences, some have horrible experiences. I know SO many people who have done the CP, and still work for Disney in some way shape or form (whether it be in the parks/corporate/etc). It really does look great on your resume!

I've been down here for 2 years (kinda putting off the 'real world' job search). I'm starting to think about going to grad school, and most of the schools I'm looking at are back home in NJ. I've also applied for other jobs elsewhere, but for now, I have a full-time job with benefits. I'm not leaving unless I get another full-time job or get in to grad school! (Plus, I really would miss being able to pop over to MK anytime I want to watch fireworks!! You kinda get used to that sort of thing!)

...if you did eat in any of the parks, did you get any kind of discount? How about eating at a resort?

Or can the CP students eat at the lunch room/cafeterias backstage? Are the prices more reasonable there than eating in the park? I would image, or hope, that they would be.

I did not party every night, not at all. I lived in Chatam which was not a party area like Vista. I had to get up early for work, so I appreciated that. My time off was mostly spent in the Disney parks or with my roommates. I was paying for my car insurance, my gas money I had a few minor car issues, flat tires and belts such nothing major, my roommates did get cable which I did not contribute to, I contributed to all other household expenses aside from that. I had to buy shoes to go with my costume, we wore hiking boots at DAK in my area, groceries, and I was in no way partying away my money or spending like crazy. It was not fun to see all my friends go to Universal and such when I could not afford to go. Trust me, I was not partying away my money as others have suggested. I did try to use the Disney buses in the beginning to get to and from work, but my schedule started to early it did not work out. They run really sparse in the early morning.

One tuesday a month me and my roomies went out to TGIFridays for a "family dinner" that was the night they offered SIN discounts (service industry night). Oh and security in Chatam was very tight.

DD is not a partier. Can you request Chatham or is it simply the luck of the draw?

Also, DD is going to apply...that's a given. Two of her other friends may apply also. If they do, and they are all accepted, can all three request each other to room together or can you only put down one roommate suggestion?

Yes you can request a complex. Can only request one roommate. But honestly my daughter is not a partier and of her free will chose Vista due to the location. It's like college...every person who goes to a known "party" school is not a partier; in fact there are large numbers at that school that never party. You tend to find your type of people and hang out with them. As I have previously mentioned my daughter rarely saw any of her roommates. She became friends and socialized with her work mates.

Very true. This has been DD's experience at college so far for the past three years of school.

Oh but if it makes you feel any better I did worry some about her being at Vista .... knowing the nicknames and reputation it has. But really it was fine.

Do I want to know what the nicknames are? And the reputation it has? :faint:

Well the reputation you have all ready stated as a party school - the nickname... Vista Lay.

Probably just has that nickname because at all those parties they eat Frito Lay potato chips :rotfl2:

I had a friend who lived there who said he heard it was voted secondon the list of places you are mostly likely to have "relations". Number one was the Playboy Mansion. Doubt that was true, but found it really funny.:lmao:

DD was in the CP as a cast member at ToT. There wasn't any pretense of traning to be a manager. Later she applied for a got a PI and worked at the Vacation Club. There was a bit more of an educational aspect to it. The PI was a higher wage. They are completely different programs.

....oh. So, it'll be much more difficult to get accepted to the PI then. I'm thinking that is what my DS will opt for, since he will be enrolling in a culinary program....I guess that he won't be able to check off as many choices for what he would like to be as a CM....

...yeah, I'm sure that's it....popcorn::

For the CP, the semester you apply you have to be in college, so you could apply your last semester, and go after you graduate. I believe the PIs are applied for during either your junior or senior year.
