Ahh - thanks for asking dvczerfs. It was grrrrrreat! We had such a blast. I am so envious of my son for getting to this AS A KID... I wish my parents had had my brother and I in the boy scouts growing up. We had a really nice time. My son was thrilled that I was able to be there with him - but at the same time wanted me to keep my distance (he's just "too cool" - ya know?) I really enjoyed watching him accomplish new things, and learn new skills.

With all of the flooding in the midwest, the lake was still 10-11 feet above normal - but the scout camp was the only one on the lake able to swim given they have removable/moveable docks. An entire roadway where the docks "should" be was well under water.

The other adult leaders and I had a blast kickin' it whenever the boys were off doing their merit badge classes - and felt like such kids ourselves. There was a killer water fight one afternoon between the adults - along with an archery competition one night (I didn't win, but I did place), rifle shooting, a very relaxing pontoon ride on the lake, and so many other cool things to do. The boys also put on some great shows at the nightly campfires.

The weather was great all week long, with only 1 pop-up shower on Wed afternoon for like 15 minutes - until Friday night. A storm was moving in right at the time of the closing campfire - so the entire show had to be moved inside the dining hall. There were over 600 boys and leaders in camp last week - so the mobilization was incredible to watch and be a part of. It turned out that we were under a tornado watch - and it was also amazing to watch how well the camp staff was able to divert the boys' attention and keep everyone entertained while monitoring the situation very closely.

It poured bucket loads for hours. Tons of lightning and thunder - and very strong winds - but nobody was hurt in any way. We were prepared, and blessed with no tornadic activity in our direct vicinity. The only "damage" so to speak was that the camp power went out in the dining hall and trading post - but the boys were all thrilled Sat. morning when the Trading Post had to give away all of the ice cream bars or trash the melting mess! Yum, yum - Klondike bars and other goodies at 8:30 in the morning! Couldn't complain about that... :lmao:

Now in 2 weeks I go to Webelos Adventure Camp with my younger son - that's just a 3 night excursion - but he's really looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to watching him try new stuff too and having a blast with him as well (he won't get the week long camping til 2010).

Then when we return from camp we're off to CA and Disneyland!!! :yay:
wow, that brings back memories. i did that for 4 summers and also we did the winter jamboree!! yes, pocono pa, minsi trail , 5 degrees, smowin, wind blowin, for some reason when your 12 the cold realy dont bother you. i made it to boy scouts and gave it up when i hit high school. drivin, girls , sports, girls, drivin, did i mention girls. i happened to marry my hs sweat heart 25 years ago. anyway, i have a dd and she does the dance thing. tap, jazz, ballet and we do alot of traveling with that. i never missed a comp or recital. my dad passed away when i was 18 but growing up, with what ever i did, when ever i would look up, he was always there. and i remebered that, its important to be there for the kids. keep up the good work, your boys will never forget what you did for them. sounds like you guys had a great time!!

stopher1, where did you guys go to camp? Sounds like a great place. I was doing the same thing as you the week before. This was my DS11 first time at Boy Scout Camp. He is the last one and it was fun to be there for his first one, although he didn't have much time for dear ole dad. Too bad he couldn't go last year....I would have been there with all three of them at the same time.

We were at Camp Ransburg near Bloomington, IN (home of IU) on Lake Monroe. Southern IN is really the only part of the state that's remotely hilly. Ransburg is over 600 acres - larger than AK. (My son loves to tell his friends that.) We definitely got lots of exercise up and down those hills and ridges.
My fav hill is called "Heart Attack Hill" - wow did that affect a few folks, especially the out of shape adults!

Sounds like a great place. We go to camp in the upstate of South Carolina at Camp Old Indian, in the edge of the mountains, so I can relate to the out of shape adults being affected by some of the climbs to campsites and on the trails.
