He could really knock out a lot of merit badges if he gets enough time to!

That's what several of his buddies who worked there last year and the year before told him too. He said he'll see what he can do. But being a CIT, it's not like he'll be in the same area all week, each week. He needs to finish his Camping MB (last Eagle one to complete). Anything else is just gravy. He already has enough elective MB's to earn 3 Eagle Palms...

<~~~~ Member of Order of the Arrow too. ;)

I never made Eagle because of sports and girls however, I was a Life rank... poor excuse but it is true.:sad2:

Wow - that's great....he's about set then. Great accomplishment - you should be very proud! :thumbsup2

I'm glad I wasn't the only one....the girls must've got to me sooner than you being that I only made it to Star!

Nice Tim! I can't wait to be an Arrowmen myself. Harrison's actually now eligible for Brotherhood this weekend... so that'll be cool too.

LOL!!!! I have no idea how I made it that far. Once I became a freshman I had football 6 days a week from August-Nov. and basketball 7 days a week from Nov-March for 4 years.

Nice!!! I remember the weekend I became a member... it was harsh! :rotfl2:

We are. He's a good kid, and I think, will go far in life.

That... or perhaps Tim was just a bit more studious at getting the job done... until his eyes were opened to the wiles of the fairer gender... I don't know... he didn't say how old he was before he failed to complete due to his athletic and feminine prowess :rolleyes1

:rotfl::rotfl2:

That is definitely one of things that we talk about within the Troop. Life is filled with many great opportunities - some of which you only get once. Achieving Eagle is one of them, that once lost will never return. Our Scoutmaster is an Eagle, and loves to talk about "once an Eagle - always an Eagle" to try and inspire the guys. Living life without regrets for not achiving something special because something "better" comes along. He tells them all about how he too got sucked in to the sports and girls vortex at 16 - but how he saw what was happening at 17 and was able to pull it off in the end, barely - before he turned 18. He had worked hard up until he was 16 to get as much done as possible and realized he wanted to finish what he'd begun. And then goes on to encourage them not to be like him, but rather to get it done before that sports and girls vortex consumes them in the first place.

I can't speak for other parts of the country, but here in Indiana, the BSA is still thought of very highly, and those Scouts from our Troop who are Eagles all got better scholarship packages and the like for their schools of choice then their non-Eagle buddies with similar backgrounds / GPA's, etc who went to the same colleges. That is a big incentive for us and our boys. Pick the activity you really want to do, run with it and be the best you can be. Put together the best possible resume of well-rounded activities and then hopefully, those scholarship offers will come knocking.

You must've had a "generous" scout leader to sign off on your merit badges...."Did you really make this basket Tim?? OK - I guess you get that basket weaving merit badge!" :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Nice "incentive"! :rotfl2:

It's hard to remember what everyone has said on here...no worries. I have a hard enough time just trying to remember everyone's first name! :lmao:

I remember spending my week at summer camp each year...loved it. And I do remember envying those scouts that were able to stay there all summer. I'm sure he'll have lots of fun. Although he may find, after being there a week or two, that he misses his family! Especially when he's sleeping on a cot (if he's lucky) and eating all the wonderful dining hall food! :rotfl2:

...
My son is 15, and we keep encouraging him to get it done... before something similar happens to him. But we've also given him the "incentive" that he won't be getting his driver's license until he achieves Eagle.

NOW I remember... I remembered posting about hoping to go to Philmont next summer, and someone said they'd had a 125 vs. 75 mile trek... but sadly couldn't remember who it was! Phew... thanks for posting that again, I thought I was losing my mind.

With that too... my eldest got notice last week of being hired for his first summer job. He'll be working at Summer Camp this year - which means he'll pretty much be gone the entire summer, with a pre-camp weekend in May as well. He's pretty stoked about it - and in his young world, thinks the $700 he'll earn is terrific. Of course in the real world, that wouldn't support anything... but hey, he's 15, and suddenly thinks he's on top of the world! He'll be a Counselor-in-Training (roving grunt), working at whichever stations or classes they need him at most. We're proud of him, but torn about him being gone at the same time. He's already talking about NEXT summer (2012) when he can be a full-fledged Counselor and teach different classes... :sad2: Both DW and I were talking the other night about how when they're young you celebrate all of those "first" milestones... but when they get older, you never quite know which will be the "last" time for something. Already this trip last week feels like it might have been the "last" full-family trip - even though it won't be - it sure smells like it. He wants to go to Hawaii with us in 2013... but even then he'll be 17. We've begun talking about some Florida trips without him :sad1: ... and #2 won't be too far behind. He wants to start working at camp as soon as he's old enough. SIGH.

It is not fun in a tent for 2.5 months!! I was the aquatic director for weeblos at Goshen scout reservation one year.. Good experience lousy sleeping conditions. Our highlight of each week was taking a road trip to good ole Wal Mart! :scared1: I still remember some words to our hawaiian punch skit! Ahhhhh noooooo. Those buddy tags!!! No no nooooooo! I just realized I have PSRSD
Post scout reservation stress syndrome!!:rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:
You stated that so eloquently! :worship: :rotfl:

Exactly what my son tells me.
::yes::

I happened to get many merit badges finished while at summer camp. :goodvibes

<bragging 'bout my kids>

Hmm... scouts stuff... more scouting stuff. Other stuff about scouts...

Anyone have kids in the Young Marines? I'd love to have someone else outside of our unit to talk about this stuff with. My son was picked to go to Space Camp with SPACES this year and he's (we hope) about to make Sergeant. He's already over a squad of 15. He got the gold Presidential voluteer pin within a year of joining.

My daughter, God bless her, is still a Private some 12 months after joining and is resigned to stay there until she's forced to move up. Then again, she's 14 so that's kind of a given.

Anyone? Anyone?

Bueller? Bueller?

:(

Oh, we're doing another Flight of Honor on my wife's and my anniversary (Apr 19) so that'll be fun. Odds on my son being plastered all over the news again? He got five full seconds and three separate shots last time. That kid can hold his bearing.

No... but it all sounds AWESOME!

Who's going to put Mark up after he gives his wife a treadmill? I'd do it, but the commute is long

No, it's from the kids. ;) Besides, Barry's photo album of his kids is a much better idea. So I'm going to get a copy of it for my wife, since she thinks his kids are cute. :thumbsup2

Post #500!

As small as this milestone is compared to some on this board it's still big for me. My love affair with Disney began when I was taken to the park in '78 with my family. Since '78 though, I've traveled to the parks on single day trips more than I can count. I joined the DIS Boards in 2009 before our first on-campus stay so I could learn more about the parks and learn about what it's like to stay IN Disney. I picked up invaluable knowledge but here in the DDC I've found great friends. I look forward to the day when I can participate in a DDC meet @ the world someday. I've either started or participated in at least two (3 maybe?) MAN LAWS and learned more about what it's like to be a real DIS Dad.

Thanks everyone!

Edit: Oh yeah, and I learned about the joy of Dole Whips. My life hasn't been the same ever since!

Here's looking forward to the next 500!
