Ours comes out closer to Dave's than Carl's, but still, we go often, and there's no way that we would get away staying as often as we do for anywhere near that amount without DVC. We knew it was for us almost right away, and when we were looking at our eldest sleeping on the trundle bed on the floor in the Alligator Bayou section of POR, with his then legs extending out the length of the bed (they're shorter than normal trundles) - and the rest of us stuffed in to those double beds. Not fun at all. Nor was the thought of getting two rooms. So we went for it, and multiple add-ons later, we're very glad we did.

Oh and just for comparison sake, we recently stayed at VGC at Disneyland in a 2 BR. I was reading on another thread that the rack rates for the villas at the Grand Californian start at about $800 per night for a studio, go up over $1,050 per night for a 1BR, and are around $1,300+ per night for a 2BR - depending on the season, of course, higher at the more popular times of year. So even IF there were a 35% or 40% discount for VGC like they currently have for Deluxe and Deluxe Villas at WDW (there isn't), that would still be $650 per night for a 1BR. Absolutely crazy. My dues on my VGC contracts equal $590 for the year - I can't even imagine spending that for one night when I spent the equivalent of 10 nights in a 1BR for that amount last year. A similar situation exists with our WDW contracts, just different rack rates and discounts, of course.

Another factor for us besides the space, was the relaxing nature that could come with the larger rooms and amenities. Our vacations didn't need to be commando any longer - not there's anything wrong with that - that style just really wears my DW out... and I want her to ENJOY trips to the World, and not resent them. So longer stays with down days filled with relaxing activities or NO activities is an important part of our time at the world now. And we love to cook in the room. Even though we are ON VACATION, doesn't mean we need to eat out every time, and DVC allows lots of flexibility in that area for us. And as the kids age, sadly the boys anyway, are starting to get out of "Disney mode" - and moving more into "hang out mode" - so another added benefit. They still like being there, just not necessarily doing the parks as much. They are enjoying exploring the "other" activities that WDW offers, and that's cool. Not buying park tickets every time isn't a bad thing either. But that's our perspective, and doesn't have to be shared by everyone! :)

stopher, we were, and are the same way. dont get me wrong, we love the parks, but you hit the nail on the head. its easier to relax in a bigger "room" that dvc has. we stayed at the all star sport the year dw drug me on the tour. just doing the laundry was a hastle. dragging it to the laundry area, waiting for 4 machines, paying 4 bucks a load, waiting for dryers, paying 4 bucks a load than hauling all back. waiting in line in the morning, with 500 other people, at the food court for a $10 muffin was also fun.:lmao: having 1200 sq ft with a full kitchen and laundy in your room is like being at home. it takes alot of the stress out that alot of people find with going to disney. we have breakfast on the balcony when it 70 degrees out in the middle of winter. no pushing, shoving, dont hear a thing. if the weather is bad, we play a game, play cards and just hang out without being in each others back pocket. the entire wdw has so much to do other than the parks that most people have no idea thats its even there.being dvc members allows us to go alot and enjoy the other things that are on property. i still remember what our tour guide said to me, "david, take the material home, look it over and call me with any questions, it was a pleasure taking you on the tour." i said, what no high pressure sales pitch????:lmao: he laughed, looked around to make sure we were alone and said, " people are nuts, they rent these places out for cash at over $800 a night. it could be $2000 a night and people will still pay it. your paying $100 a night (this is 1999) over at all star sports to stay in a motel. it could be $400 and people will still pay it.after you look this over, and realize you will be paying the same for a 1br in 2030 as you do today, most people call back.:lmao: crude, but the guy had a point!:thumbsup2 all that said, this is were we vacation. we are not shore people. we dont gamble and were not drinkers. i and we love it there and will keep going back god willing. its like home to us. i as a kid,i spent alot of time with the parents there and now;, i feel good knowing our dd has 24 trips under her belt as she turns 18 and still would go tomorrow if you asked her. dvc is a commitment!!! dont get caught up in the magic while your there. think about it. alot of people jump than lose intrest or the will to pay for it.

re: DVC stuff:

I always seem to get to that point of looking at the dollar value and see how much I could save by doing out of pocket - with no financing at all. Honestly, that's where I'd like to be and if I had the spare money lying around I know we'd jump on it.

IMO, from a DVC owner, don't try to look at DVC from a financial standpoint. I think there will always be deals and cheaper ways of going to WDW than DVC. DW and I went on our honeymoon and had a great time. But, after our first trip with our children, we were hooked. Then after 4 years and 4 stays on property, we bought into DVC. I don't want to stay off property and it won't be "what are the deals" to consider. Now, when the children get older and want to do Universal or somewhere else, then we will still stay at WDW and drive over there. After children move out from home, we will continue to return and also like having the option of the 2 beach resorts as well. I'm sure I could put together an actuarial table with projected costs, inflation, dues, etc., but don't really care.

I agree that it is better if you can purchase outright as opposed to financing. We went thought timeshare store and bought a small contract and purchased it outright. Then, being careful about Use Years, you can add on more contracts. Another option, if you go through Disney as opposed to TSS, you may be able to stay through DVC, pay half the purchase cost, put half on a Disney Chase Card and pay it off in 6 months w/o interest.

We are certainly not a wealthy family (make less than $100,000 per year) but blessed with being able to purchase 3 contracts (2 at SSR and one at BLT) and are able to take 2 vacations a year. Good luck with your decision and planning.

welcome back chad!!! when are you going in june? theres a few of us who are going in june.:thumbsup2

When I returned the rental car to the airport on Wednesday, I noticed a military jet sitting on the opposite side of the runway. Later that day, the whole office got a shake... Turns out that the jet that I saw was number 7 of the Navy's Blue Angels. A coworker is a pilot and happened to be at the airport when the pilot left and got a few pictures and some video of the jet taking off to Chicago. (The pilot said that he would be there in an hour. That's about 600 miles!)

The video showed him taking off but keeping on the deck until he reached the end of the runway, at which time it was straight up and into the clouds. This was followed shortly by the office shaking sonic BOOM!

Yep! The #7 jet is a 2-seater F/A-18 Hornet. The #7 pilot and the Events Coordinator are currently visiting cities where the Blues will be appearing this year. The Events Coordinator's responsibilities are: to visit with show site sponsors and secure accommodations and ground support for each demonstration show. For 2011, I believe the #7 pilot is Lt. David Tickle. Lt Todd Royles (#8), of Willow Grove, PA, is the Events Coordinator. One of them also serves as the announcer for the Blues' portion of the air show. During the show season, the #7's crew chief will often fly along to/from shows. That is a highly prized position among the crew chiefs! The #7 jet is also the one used for flying celebrities, military brass, news people, etc. around on air show weekends. That probably beats even Aerosmith's RnR! You can see Adam Savage's (MythBusters) ride here: Adam Savage's Blue Angels Ride:woohoo: My son will be a Crew Chief for the #1 jet, the Blues' CO!

Plunge participants set a fundraising goal and get pledges from family, friends and colleagues for their commitment to be “freezin' for a reason.” Polar Plunge benefits nearly 20,000 Special Olympics Pennsylvania athletes – the state’s largest year-round organization devoted to sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. By being a part of the Plunge challenge, you are allowing thousands upon thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities to experience a brighter tomorrow

I'm just taking one for the DDC team there Brian! In my shorts & t-shirt, having a ball with Greg & his charming family. Pics to come later.

Living in St. Louis, I don't have a football team to cheer for. I went through my closet today, and found a green and yellow "Brasil" football (well, soccer) jersey. So, it looks like I'm cheering for thePackers today.

Plus, I like cheese.

4 out of the 5 members of my family were wearing Bears stuff to church this morning. I'm pretty sure that means God is on our side today. Go Bears!! And while we're at it, Go Blackhawks!

YOU CHICAGO BOYS CAN PACK THAT STANLEY CUP UP, LOOKS LIKE IT WONT BE THERE MUCH LONGER!!! :lmao: HOW BOUT THEM FLYERS!!!:thumbsup2

Another KY Dis Dad. I'm a few hours west of you. Welcome.

I went to the AAA office yesterday to put the $200 down for our Disney trip this fall. The "Disney lady" in the office has been around for quite a while and has booked several trips for my parents over the years. While I don't really need a travel agent, I do enjoy the occasional perks AAA provides, and it is always nice to sit and talk with her about Disney.

Anyway, while I was there yesterday morning, I had to wait on her to finish with a family that got there before I did. They had a young daughter, probably 4, and they hadn't told her they were going to Disney World. They were sitting there looking through the brochures while the TA was taking care of doing the paperwork and talking about the characters and various things to see. All of a sudden a light went off and that little girl figured out what was going on. She started getting excited and asked who she'd get to see there. Her mom told her that they are going to Disney World, she'd get to see Cinderella, Mickey, etc... and she'd get to eat breakfast with Handy Manny. Apparently the magic words are "breakfast with Handy Manny." She then started running around the office telling everyone in there that she was going to eat breakfast with Handy Manny. They finished and left with the little girl still bouncing off the walls. I sit down with the TA and we both have a little laugh about that little girl, then she mentions that 9 months is going to be a long wait for her breakfast. :scared1:

I just thought it was really neat to see that reaction. Kind of like getting a little dose of Disney magic by just going to book my trip. Excitement like that is contagious, but I feel sorry for her parents now.:rotfl2::lmao:
