Congratulations! Now that you're in the food service industry, I wonder if you'll eat at the Disney restaurants with a more critical eye.

I'm looking in to getting a trip together for my extended family and I'd like to glean some wisdom from your collectively considerable experience. Given the extremely attractive rates of some very nice rental homes in the area, I'm thinking of staying off-property next time. I know a lot of you are DVC owners and therefore rarely if ever stay off-site, but if you ever have stayed at a non-Disney property, what did you think? The main thing I'm thinking about is transportation. My research suggests that leaving a house and driving to a park will almost always take less time than relying on Disney(although I'd have to pay for parking), but what do you think? Is it an extra hassle to be responsible for your own transportation or is it a blessing to know that you won't have to face a huge bus/boat/monorail liine that makes several stops before getting to your destination.

My heart says go back to Disney, but my wallet says find a way to do it cheaper (hence, the rental home idea). If we were to stay on-site, I'd need to rent enough DVC points to get at least 3 rooms in either BWV or BLT. When you add up the costs, a rental home merits strong consideration. Then there's the issue of being away from the Disney atmosphere. I liked being right in the heart of it at BWV and I might miss it if I stayed off-site.

Also, this hypothetical trip would take place Oct 29 - Nov 5. That's during Food & Wine. I've never been there during that time. What does it do to the crowds at Epcot? I'm sure the crowds swell quite a bit, but are those folks going to impact the lines for the attractions or just clog up World Showcase?

Any input is appreciated.

We were wanting to go in 2010, but it was just too difficult to get put together financially. My MIL and lil BIL will be coming this time. My lil BIL is 9yo. Yeah, I know - hahaha.

Question: I'm surprised (I guess I shouldn't be) that Universal is $100/per person (kids the same price). Does anyone know of any options for cheaper tickets there?

Question 2: I have two girls and a boy, the boy being the youngest. He's not erally into pirates or anything; he likes cars and the original characters. My lil BIL loves Pirates. Aside from the POTC ride, are there any shows or other rides that are Pirates related? Maybe, dressup (kinda like BBB) or anything like that?

You are picking a great time to go. We have traveled during that time frame in the past and love it. I am sure that the Halloween weekend will be busy but aside from that you will be in good shape. We do not stay on property...we have a time share through Hilton that we use and drive where we want when we want. I like feeling more in control of what I do and when I do it. Parking was 14 a day if I recall correctly...which is sky high but worth the trade off.

Now, as far as an off site home. I have two ideas for you. I have seen on some of the other threads people who rent home in Windsor Hills. Looks VERY nice and the homes have their own private pools. I would do that option if we did not already have a place. My second idea is to go to VRBO.com and see what sorts of home and condos are available. VRBO stands for Vacation Rentals By Owner. I have used this sits for stays in Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach and it is great! We have managed to stay in beautiful places for cheaper than we have stayed in years past.

I am not sure about the Pirate thing but as far as your Universal Tickets you might check out Undercover Tourist. There is a special link inside the mousesavers.com newsletter that comes out the 15 of every month to get a little more of a discount. It wont save huge amounts but every little bit counts!!!

I have no input on staying off property because I have never done so. However, my sister did a couple of years ago and enjoyed it with a couple of exceptions: they stayed in a hotel and had limited transportation to the parks that often resulted in them taking cabs. Also, you don't get to do the EMH times, but I'm guessing that isn't an issue if it is an extended family trip. Just hope that you can get it done in a manner that is affordable as possible for everyone in your party.

It was a 3500sq ft 5-6 bedroom house in Windsor Palms and literally 10 minutes from the parks. Would i do it again... .ABSOLUTELY! We spent $1183 total- rental, tax, pool heat, cleaning. I also have 15 houses saved on my computer that I can send to you. PM me if you want me to email you the list. I was looking for a reasonable price $800-1400 and location.

There is a Pirate treasure hunt as well at CBR (I think) that takes the kids on a 2 hour treasure hunt. Then there is the Pirate cruise that starts at the Contemperary and goes out on the lake for the fireworks starting with stories from Capt Hook and Smee. Then when you get back to land you get to meet Peter Pan.
There is a number on the disney website for the adventures. Ill try to find it and post it.

I have to admit that I try to not be too critical when I am at Disney CS restaurant. If however I am at a TS I expect a higher level of food and service. For the prices that Disney charges we should not expect any less.

Yes, the 4th of Jan. We had AP's this year and really the only reason we were able to pull this trip off. They expire on the 23rd of this month and figured why not.

Yes we have done The Pirate's League & the Pirate Firework Cruise, both were really fun, The Pirate's League has changed a bit since we did it last year, now everything is like BBB it's all alacart, instead of package deals.

We have not done the treasure hunt yet since only kids can do it, I'm not comfortable leaving a 5yr old alone for 2hrs maybe in a few years

Also by POTC Captain Sparrow comes out for a show, and across from POTC a Pirate Band called Rusty Cutlass performs (I don't know times or days they do it)

Long and short of it is I will be stuck in southern Florida over the MLK Day weekend on my own. So given that I'll have a company paid rental card, with unlimited miles, I'm thinking of taking a drive a few hours north on Saturday Morning and spending the night in the WDW area.

SO if there are any Dads who will be at The World during the weekend of Jan 15/16 let me know if you are able to do a meetup. (I won't be buying a park ticket since I won't have a full day either day to use a full fare ticket.)
