Thanks for the welcome guys. It's been rough, but Joni:littleangel: would kill me (or at least haunt me:lmao:) if I didn't keep posting. She had me respond to all her friends on (SnowBird Chat) when her neuropathy from the chemo wouldn't allow her to type. So I've been a "ghost" poster on here for a while. And hey, we all love Disney, so it's all good.

:lmao::lmao:

Next: only 96 days till WDW! I graduated high school in '96.

Also, i chaperoned a field trip Apple Picking yesterday. I took the new Mustang on some 2-lane highways. it was :woohoo:. The "old" top speed (for me) in my new car was 89. New top speed: 93.:thumbsup2 It's important to note that the car was fine to go faster, i was not.

Back in my younger, much, much more stupid days (or, maybe slightly more stupid days), I took a '66 Mustang convertible out on the local road where one goes to do stupid things with cars. I cannot give you an accurate speed calculation, because when you get near the triple-digit territory, the speedometer needle in those cars kind of wavers back and forth a lot. Not a smart move at all. No airbags... the thing barely had seatbelts. And, of course, no roof.

This goes into the "do as I say, not as I did when I was your age" file for my kids.

Helloooo Boys..I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacckkk:lmao::lmao:

Trying to get caught up, will catch up on what I missed later...:cool1:

Been a whirlwind few days, and naturally it'll take a good bit to really settle in:happytv:

Thanks for all the well wishes...

Droppin' in to say wwwaaassssuuuupppp:rotfl2:

Welcome back!

Just wanted to say, "Hang in there" and I'm hoping for the best.

My name is Rick and my Wife had been posting on this board for a few years. Joni passed away from cancer July 17th. She was 33 years old and we had just celebrated our 11th Anniversary. We have two children, ages 6 and 4 and we have a trip planned January 16-23, 2011.

We have gone the last four Januarys as a family. This year will be our first as DVC members. My Wife had in her "final wishes" that I purchase a DVC Membership for the children because "Disney was always our special place" and that the children would then "always have Disney" even without Mommy being there.

She was a special woman. She was the definition of someone who fought like hell. She was my best friend and I miss her more than words can describe. Other than each other (and our children), our one love was Disney. We celebrated our 10th Anniversary there as well.

So there is a little back story about me, sorry to bring things "down" a bit. I hope to have a good time on here with all. Take care!;)

Welcome, Rick. I am so sorry for your loss. Do not worry about bringing things down. The folks here are great for support, no matter what. It did get a little dusty reading your introduction, I will admit.

So, I downloaded the monorail.wav from http://www.wdisneyw.co.uk/sounds.html and changed my sounds. So, everytime the computer logs on or off, you hear (really loud), "Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas." I changed the sounds on ALL the computers, including DW's work laptop. She is
Yeah, and she was talkin' smack about you on the Mom's Club board. My wife was laughing, so I asked her what was so funny. She said started reading your wife's post to me. Before she could finish, I had the monorail spiel playing on my laptop. She just rolled her eyes and went back to reading. :rotfl2:

The fastest I've ever gone was about 110 in my '92 Chevy Beretta. I was in a hurry to meet my girlfriend at a movie theatre about 20 miles from my house (almost all 2 lane country driving). There was a string of about 10-15 cars & trucks that I really wanted to pass, and two crotch rockets behind me that had the same idea. One of them got ahead of me, the other stayed right on my tail. I had an escort!

As the Navy would say about the top cruising speed for an aircraft carrier (in excess of 30 knots)... my top speed is considerably in excess of the maximum speed limit. Love my stage 2 Subaru Impreza WRX... and yes, I know I will draw ire from the American muscle lovers here. But my 300HP comes at a much more affordable price! :lmao:
On a slightly related note - did you guys know when the space shuttle takes off, it runs its engines at 104% of rated capacity? When the first generation of engines were redesigned and replaced, they made them more powerful. But they never updated the power scale, meaning that the new engines run at 104%. :thumbsup2

I don't know for sure, but I do seem to have a lot more pink stuff in my life now. They actually sent me a robe from the Cinderella Suite in the Magic Kingdom for Mother's Day. I looked pretty good, standing in the driveway in my robe, holding a beer, in flip-flops and an IU hat to cover my bed-head, screaming at the kids to get off my lawn.

Dad would have been proud.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Hey Dads!!!

Welcome back Fed:banana::banana::banana: I am sure your little boy is excited to see Daddy!!!:thumbsup2

Been a rough week here...sorry to be a downer...just needed to unload for a minute and then go back to being the strong one again....Wife went to doc on Tuesday and got her Biopsy results of her Thyroid..well..it was cancerous...so surgery is scheduled for next Friday. She is worried of course ....I know exactly how she feels...because believe it or not 16 years ago I had Thyroid cancer myself...mine was Medullary kind and hers is Follicular. Say a little prayer that it is all self contained and that no further treatment after surgery will even be necessary. I have tried to tell her to think of happier things and the upcoming trip in December....Until the surgery is over there will be no feeling of safety for her. I managed to get a few days off to have a long weekend so I can be Mr Mom while she is recovering...Just remember us in your prayers and don't forget about me if I am not on here much for a bit...I am still around...just lurking a bit while other things settle out here
.
We're all praying for you, Steve!

Rick - welcome to the club! My kids are almost the same age as yours, and I can't imagine being able to raise them without my DW. But it's amazing what the human spirit can accomplish when it needs to. If you ever need any help or advise or just a place to vent, you've found it.

Just Back from The World!

Wonderful trip. Stayed at the Grand Floridian, They Upgraded us to the Grand Palm Concierge level (Best Upgrade ever) after our original room was right next to the daytime construction. Honestly, the noise from 9am to 4pm is obnoxious lots of beeping, banging hissing, shouting, you know, construction noises. The Manager was very kind and very undrestanding...Can't say enough about the disney method of handling issues.

Learned an important lesson about EMH's. Simply don't go to the park on those days. Sunday 9/19 was brutal in the MK. Now I've read a hundred times on this board not to go to a park when they have EMH's, I told my wife about those threads...she decided to ignore my insight. WE paid.

A note about MNNSHP. Do it. This is a wonderful party. The park is decked out to the nines. Low numbers of guests and you essentialy have the run of the park. Not to mention the fireworks display will bring you to tears.

A note on the monorail system. I feel it has been so overburdened it doesn't function properly as a transportation system. I love the Kitche idea of the monorail, but it can't transport the guests effciently simply because of the sheer number of guests trying to use it. Plus the system is rather inflexible as a concept. If one train breaks down (Which happened at an alarming rate while we were there) the whole system clogs almost to the point of complete gridlock. Add to that having to handle handicapped guests/ECV's, the system simply can't perform.

We loved all the parks...The construction at the MK was disappointing, but it has to be done. There was however a LArge crane installing lights on the castle the whole time we were there. Really marrs the picutres, but hey, what can ya do.

A note on EPCOT, There is so much wasted space in EPCOT. The wife and I decided they need to do another round of Imagineering on what the year 2100 is going to look like then fill up that wasted space in EPCOT with that. It currently feels dated and not relevant to the theme of Experimental Prototype City. This current prototype has run its course and a new one needs to be introduced.

Next time we go we are going to arrive on a sunday night, and leave on a sunday morning. The corwd levels during the week were very low but on saturday and sunday, it gets out of control.

I'm sure there are other things I'll think of later today, but that's it for now

Boy, I can relate. In the winter of 1994 I decided to buy my first new car. I was a few years out of college and had a decent paying job, so I figured why not. I live in Upstate New York where we get a ton of snow so I had to make it practical for the winter. I got a loaded 1995 Z28 Camaro... real practical.

Anyway, Joni (girlfriend at the time) and I decided to take it out for a high speed run on some back roads below Syracuse. I hit 143 mph before I chickened out. It sounded like a freight train was coming thought the T-tops and the front end was getting awful light. You couldn't tell me I wasn't the man for going that fast. Joni says let me give it a shot, a few minutes later I wasn't feeling so cool. She had hit 146 mph and only stopped because we were running out of room.

She never let me live it down (even up to the day she passed away). Of course when I tell this story to my kids in a few years it will be me that hit 146!

Hey guys! Welcome newbies!

Rough day working from home yesterday. I had a conference call with a judge and opposing counsel about a case that both opposing counsel and I were SURE was going to be disposed of based on our cross-motions for summary judgment (meaning we wouldn't have a trial). Instead, the judge told us she'd be issuing a one-sentence ruling that "there remained issues of fact in dispute, so the case was not appropriate for summary judgment." She didn't bother to identify which material facts were still in dispute. Neither opposing counsel nor I could figure out what was still in dispute factually either.

So now, we have to be ready to go to trial (in middle-of-nowhere Missouri) on October 22. Since I'm at WDW from Oct. 1-9, that means I have to travel to D.C. the week after my vacation to depose a so-called "expert" witness and I'll have to miss The Bug's Halloween performance at school, because I'll be several hours away, trying a case that could have been settled for less that what it's going to cost to pay the expert to be deposed.

I shouldn't whine, but these sorts of cases are really annoying. I get it. The industry doesn't like this safety standard. They've been trying to get around it ever since it was promulgated over a decade ago. I don't care if they like it. They still have to follow it.

I feel your pain.

As much as I'd like to say I enjoy seeing my arch-nemesis in pain, I can't. I've been in similar situations too many times and I've had to miss too many things for the kids (one is too many). Unfortunately, the Judge wimped out and took the easy road.

Still, I'm sure you will enjoy your trip.

Don't worry, your fantasy football team will still be winless when you get back.

That timing is horrible. If it will help at all, I do know of several place in the DC area that serve this beverage called "beer" that I hear a lot of good things about. I can help get you pointed in the right direction while you're in town.

Been rather busy but I wanted to at least check in. As usual life seems to toss out a mix of circumstances. Some good… Some not so much…

Steve, where keeping you whole family in our thoughts.

Welcome to out newest members!!! Glad to see our rather diverse group continuing to grow.
Rick, very sorry for you loss, but we’re honored to have you along. We’re good listeners, and we have been known to share a laugh or two. :goodvibes

Speaking of laughs… “Chuck Norris”, “the Monorail Voice Over”… You guys kill me... :lmao: As for everything that goes wrong always being the husbands fault, that ones buried in the fine print on the marriage license. You did read that before signing the thing, right? :rolleyes1

As for the goings on in our little house, we’re doing well. Thankfully, were relatively healthy right now (I’m a week into the weight loss regime and staying with it at least). As charter members of the “Marching Band Geeks Association” our busy season is getting under way. The props are all built; we have a Friday night ball game, a full dress rehearsal, and the first competition coming up this weekend. This is where all the work the kids have been putting in since July should start to pay off. I’ll let you know how things turn out.

Y’all take care and I’ll check back in when I get a chance.

Makes me think of my dad... He's never mentioned the first word to me about ever even owning this car (except to tell me about getting a speeding ticket and my grandpa taking his keys for a month as a warning about consequences when I got my license), but from what I've heard from all the guys that he grew up with, he had a '68 Chevelle that couldn't be touched. My best friend's dad had a Camaro that was pretty fast in it's own right, but he's told me there's an impressive list of muscle cars that my dad smoked in his Chevelle. When my grandma passed away a few years ago, we went through some pictures, and I finally saw the first visual evidence I've ever had that the car even existed. He still wouldn't get into details when I asked about it. He just said he wished he'd never sold it.:lmao: I feel the same way!

Is there anyone in the DC area? I just booked a trip to Pentagon City for a conference and will be there Nov 14 & 15th if anyone would like to met up for a drink and trade WDW stories.

Hey Marty,

I am in DC, but will actually be at WDW until the 15th. Depending on how long you're going to be around on the 15th, I might be back in town, but may be exceedingly morose because of having to leave WDW.

Just wanted to say, "Hang in there" and I'm hoping for the best.

Welcome, Rick! I'm very sorry for your loss. Your DW was definitely a special person and your story certainly makes me appreciate my DW even more. Don't worry about bringing us down.......we can't get much lower most days! :) Besides, that's why we're here!

I haven't mentioned this for a while because there wasn't much going on to talk about. I talked to our Navy son yesterday and he should be reporting in to the Blue Angels around November 3rd! He will be taking some "leave" for the first couple weeks of October and he will then report back to his command in MD until the end of the month. Around November 1st, he's planning to take his car on the auto train to Sanford followed by a drive to Pensacola.
Has anyone taken the auto train before from VA to Sanford? Any advice or tips?

Wow, that was a pretty powerful post! Hang in there, Rick...she'll be there with you all in January, spreading a little extra pixie dust around :thumbsup2

Quick question, and what better place to ask!

Heading back down on Sunday and am looking to play golf on Oct. 2. Now, I've played Palm / Magnolia / LBV all fairly recently. But, it's been a while since I've played Osprey Ridge. Flash poll: Magnolia vs. Osprey Ridge and why?

I'm a single digit handicapper, will be playing with one other, and we both have been fortunate enough to have notched up quite a few "top 100" courses in our lifetimes. There is something that I enjoy about Magnolia and it's not necessarily that the Tour stops there...it's that I can hear the MK train whistle (and other ambient noises) from the course :goodvibes but, I thought I'd give Osprey another look as well.

Have a GREAT wekeend everyone! The Odyssey pulls out of Cincinnati on Sunday for a 12 night stay with DW and two DD's! :yay::yay::yay:

BUd, You have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. I'll remember this post when I kiss my wife goodnight.

Glad you're aboard.

I haven't played either course, but Lou Mongello did a long piece with a couple of Disney golf course "regulars" within the last couple of months on his wdwradio.com podcast. It's probably worth a listen.
