Serious question for the group:

I'm on vacation with 7 other families at the Outer Banks with very old friends. We've been doing it for 6 years (33 people & 2 dogs). One family is new this year (known only to one other family). I'm a pediatrician, and I noticed that their 2 year old has classic signs of a rare genetic disease -Williams Syndrome. Frequently this goes undiagnosed, & it is clear from my conversations with his parents that they have no idea.

Here's my question: Do I tell them & how? My wife & I think I should tell the family that invited them & have them make the approach, but I'd love to have some advice! Thanks for your help!!

You came in here for a serious discussion? Uh, have you seen this group? :rotfl2:

Ok, all kidding aside, I would talk to the family that invited them first. I wouldn't have them deliver the news, but maybe they can serve as a mediator/ice-breaker to have you talk to them. My first inclination is to wait until the last day...no sense ruining the vacation. Is this a serious condition, or something their child will be able to live with? :confused3

Does this particular family know you are a pediatrician?? If so I would approach them privatley and just start a conversation. Then work into has your pediatrition ever noticed or mentioned....... and then let it go from there...If it were me I would rather hear it from a professional instead of the friend of a professional. Keep us posted

DW and I agree with Steve. In fact, I didn't even finish reading your post to her when she just blurted out - YES! As parents, we would rather hear it from a professional.

This is a tough call for me. Are you sure they have no idea there could be anything wrong or different about their child? We have very close friends who have a special needs child. At age four he eats most of his food through a tube, has a hard time talking, and i'm not even sure how to put this, but he shows some signs of autism or something similar. But I also know they are very uncomfortable with talking about his issues. I guess it really depends on the individuals. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

So, hey guys....I have been reading through a few pages and it looks like a few of you hit wdw more than once a year. I was wondering how often ya'll go?

We had a great time in March 2009 and are going again Feb 2011. I've been missing it like crazy! We're planning on not telling the kids at all. Maybe they won't figure it out till about 4 or 5 hours into the trip - hehehe.

Oh you can join - but you've got to post your creed!
Welcome to the club!

This probably sounds weird and crazy to people who don't know us. But my son gets a kick out of saying it with me, lmao:

We're Men!
We fight all night!
We drink root beer!
Man power!

(Followed by a Tim Allen/Home Improvement man grunt session)

Anyway, he's my little partner in crime and i'm not sure what i'd do without him. :goodvibes

Generally once a year for us. We do try and do a week some place else as well. This past year it was Disney and also a trip to Virginia. Now that we have APs, we will try and go twice within a years time to make the passes worth it.

If it were up to me, we'd go 10 or 12 times a year. We've been averaging about 2 trips a year - either October (for the Kid's birthdays) or December and then March. DD starts kindergarten this fall, so we'll probably have to start adjusting the timing a little bit.

I am trying to come up with a good name for the championship game. I was thinking the "Dole Whip Cup" :drinking1 but I am, as always, open to suggestions.

The should arrest the Twins for the beating they are laying on Kansas City tonight 19-0 in the 8th inning. :scared1:

Glad I have Joe Mauer on my Fantasy Baseball team.

Thanks Barry, I appreciate that! Man, now my wife is talking about another one though. I don't know if I can handle it, lol. But Bradley will be 6 and going into kindergarten this year, I suppose it is a good time to have another baby in the house...

Thanks, guys! The parents do know I'm a pediatrician and earlier this pm, they were asking me about ADHD (which he doesn't have) so I may already have an opening. I'm going to take Mark's advice & wait until later in the trip

I'm also not sure they don't know. As a parent of a special needs child (with autism) I'm very familiar with both denial & not sharing the diagnosis with everyone!

Also complicating things is that Williams is something that responds to early intervention, so missing a diagnosis could have significant consequences.

Thanks again for the advice! I'll let you know how it goes.

Checking in with you guys after a little hiatus. Been dealing with some **** at work and some personal stuff.

What better place to get some cheering up than The DIS? And what better people than the DIS Dads!
