wow, one of my customers this weekend had a guy working on his christmas tree farm. hes worked for him for awhile. the guy had his 12 year old son with him. he allowed his 12 year old son to back his dump truck up near the house of the tree farm. the son ran over the fill valve for the 1000lb burried lp tank.the 12 year old got out of the truck to see what he hit. saddly, there was an explosion, the 12 year old was killed instantly and the father is in the hosp. with burns over 90 percent of his body. they dont think hes going to make it. sad morning this morning at work.

I'm so sorry this happened.

This is why I do what I do for a living.

(And why I will continue to argue with anyone who will listen about why the exemptions for "family businesses" to Federal labor and safety laws need to go away).

its a very sad thing that happened, my best friend grew up on a farm and has been operatiing heavy equiptment since he was nine. but man, why in the world would you, as a grown adult, let a kid, drive a dump truck alone in someone elses yard??? i wasnt even able to mow the grass till i was 14. im not pointing fingers or blaming anyone but man.a kid just got killed a few weeks ago on a lawn mower a few towns over, he was 9!!!

That is very sad. I work for Comcast Cable and one of our maintence guys was just killed while working by electric wires. Just to change the subject Me and my family only have 5 days until the wilderness lodge, the wife just made tye dye shirts for everyone with Mickey heads in the center. I can't wait to leave.

Y’all have a wonderful time on world. I’m really envious about your plan to stay at the Wilderness Lodge. We’ve been on the grounds over there several times and it’s one of my favorite resorts to visit (I just need to cough up enough money to actually stay there some time ). If you’re flying, have a smooth trip, if you’re driving, think of us while you roll through the Carolinas.

I can not even begin to imagine how this family feels and what they are going through now. My heart breaks for them!!!

its a very sad thing that happened, my best friend grew up on a farm and has been operatiing heavy equiptment since he was nine. but man, why in the world would you, as a grown adult, let a kid, drive a dump truck alone in someone elses yard??? i wasnt even able to mow the grass till i was 14. im not pointing fingers or blaming anyone but man.a kid just got killed a few weeks ago on a lawn mower a few towns over, he was 9!!!

I know family farms live under an entire different set of workplace laws, but I'm not sure what they are. And I'm quite sure my father didn't either when he has us out on the tractors around 8 or 9. He was very strict about it, though. None of us children were allowed behind the wheel until we had lots of practice and the respect for these large pieces of powerful equipment was drilled into us.
Although no amount of practice can prevent tragic accidents. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family.

Awesome, have a blast. We love Wilderness Lodge, even though we've never stayed there. It's just a beautiful resort and we've gone visit it every time we've been to WDW.

One of these days, I'll make enough money to afford a trip there.

Thanks for posting this, looks like I'll be seeing a partial refund for dining Since I'm staying at a value, If I remember right last year it was $150 to upgrade the free QS plan to the DDP, anything they want to take off the bill, I'm all for

Free dining ends on 12/21, and we arrive 12/27. not for us this trip. Still, DxDDP and I are going to have a great trip.

My son has the rest of his life to work I want him to be a kid...now granted the 12 year old may have "wanted" to drive the tractor, and we all know how dads can berolleyes1), but what a horrible way to be reminded that kids are kids and bad things can happen

My 7 yr old is not asking to be a grown up yet, and that makes me happy. We(people) have 40 years to work, and 20 to be a kid (rough estimates) so i'm going to try to encourage the boys to have fun while they can.

That said, I grew up riding in tractors, learning to drive them and steering them sitting on the lap of my dad/grandpa all the time, so by the time I was 8 or 9, I knew more about how to safely operate them than any high school kid you could hire for part time help would ever know. I've got 2 cousins that help us on the farm, one 14 the other 18 and as far as safety goes, I'll trust the 14 year old any time (and I've trusted him for the past 3 or 4 years). He is actually a much safer operator than my grandpa is these days.

That buddy of yours that owns the dealership must have cut you one heck of a good deal.

Yeah he did.....he actually met me at the Bass Masters Classic in Birmingham with the boat, but I took it back to have something added!!!!

Loong story about the first time I went to his shop (involving getting caught in a winter storm at O'hare on my way back from Iraq in 2006 and being told I was stuck a week--until I drove to INdy and flew out the next day), but I met him on an internet fishing site, and we fished a few get togethers!!!

What kind of farming do you do? My brother still runs the family farm I grew up on - about 400 acres, milking around 100 head of Holsteins 2x a day. It's about a 2 hour drive from where I live now, but my kids just love going up and going on tractor rides, petting the calves, trying to catch the cats, etc.

Used to have swine and a beef herd but got out of those several years ago... I'd like to get back into a scaled back hereford herd one of these days though. We are strictly grain now, about 2000 acres corn and soybeans. My sisters do have some paint horses and Dad has kept some pasture ground for them, but I don't count show horses as part of the farm.

We always wanted to stay there, but figured we'd never be able to afford a trip there. So when DW and I were in Florida for a long weekend, I surprised her with a night there (the other 2 were at the Quality Inn). I could justify the splurge for one night much more easily!
