Howdy all,
Well it’s our second day of experiencing the nation’s capitol. We had the solemn honor of experiencing Arlington National Cemetery this morning. If you never been, find the opportunity at some time in your future, if you have experienced America’s most sacred ground, then you already understand. It is both a humbling and uplifting experience at the same time. Here are a few (hopefully respectful) images that I hope will properly illustrate our experience this day.

The Tomb of the Unknowns

I’d also like to take just a moment to thank all of the currently serving and retired veterans. Our nation and all of its citizens owe each of you a debt of gratitude.

great Arlington pics. Did you stick around for the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknowns? That's something I'll never forget.

Thanks for the DisDads.com shoutout Cap'n. I'm embarrassed about how far behind I've gotten with our clubhouse. I'm hoping to get caught up on content additions this week. Coming up: Toy Story 3 review, Midnight Run to Minneapolis/Nick Universe trip report, and something about our October WDW trip (not sure exactly what yet). I did get a new poll added tonight.

Hey guys, sorry I've been out of pocket for a week or so. Just got back from our family vacation in Smoky Mountains. Rough 12-hour drive from Louisiana (ironically the same distance to Orlando), but I made it with the help of WDW Radio podcasts, MouseWorld Radio and some other Disney music.

Anyway, I gotta say that the next person who tells me Disney is "too expensive" is going to get smacked upside the head. My wife is usually the one that handles all the finances, but for this trip, I helped budget the money as to avoid going overboard. And I'm here to tell you that taking a trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg is just as expensive, if not more expensive, than a trip to WDW. Especially when you consider what you get in return for your money.

It was a fantastic trip and very relaxing, but I guess the Disney enthusiast in me couldn't help but notice how much more you get at WDW. I'm not sure what we spent total for a 7-day stay, but it was as much as our 2009 trip to WDW. And this trip, we ate out for only four meals (Subway, pizza, McDonald's and a dinner show). The rest of the time we either cooked at our cabin or ate picnic lunches in the Smoky Mountain National Park. In our 2009 WDW trip, we had the dining plan and had one table service and one counter service meal per day. The ONLY meal we paid for in WDW last year was Hoop-Dee-Doo.

I never notice these kind of things, because like I said, my wife has the checkbook. But that's two trips where I helped handle the finances (previous being a trip to Florida beaches) and both non-Disney vacations were priced as high as our two previous Disney trips.

Just wanted to get that off my chest. :cool1:

Father's Day...Tiny (DS10) woke-up feeling bad...ended up with a really bad Stomach bug.
I hope he's feeling better. I came down with a stomach bug Wednesday afternoon and I'm still feeling the effects of it. I'm starting to wonder if I have an inner ear thing going on or something. To top it off, I have my annual physical at work on Thursday.

Father's Day...Tiny (DS10) woke-up feeling bad...ended up with a really bad Stomach bug.

DW made me go out with Boy (DS15) for Lunch...so Tiny wouldn't feel guilty.
We went to my favorit Steakhouse over in Kingsport, TN.

Then on the way back I stopped by my Brother's house to give Nephew's B-Day Gift....but bail on party...

Went home to Tiny-sit...so DW could go visit her Dad...who was also feeling bad...

She got home around 6pm...then I finally I got to walk across the field to visit my Dad.

Later... Tiny was really weak and getting very dehydrated...so a visit to the ER for some Fluids and Nausea Meds....at 10pm...left the ER around 1AM and went to Walgreens to fill a prescription...got home and setted in by 230AM.

hope your feelin better nate, i hate those stomach bugs. i had a great fathers day. i didnt see dd till about 7pm, she had to work. we went out to eat monday night just her and i. dw wasnt hungry yet. and i stayed home and took care of dw on fathers day and took naps when she did.:lmao:

Happy Belated Father's Day everybody!

Welcome to the new dads!
Steve: Welcome back home, and I hope you guys had a great time!
KTME and GoofyIsAsGoofyDoes: Hope you're having a great trip!

Dave, just remember: all of those people were Eagles fans! :thumbsup2:rotfl2:

As my parents would say: "Shut the doors! You're killing the battery!" :lmao:

:eek: You mean my FB comment was right?! (putting on Keanu Reeves face) Whoa.

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

Ah...the love of a father and son. Timeless.

i tend to look at them as flyers fans myself.:lmao::lmao:

great Arlington pics. Did you stick around for the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknowns? That's something I'll never forget.

Yes we did, and I have to agree with you. Watching the precision and passion the members of the Old Guard put into that honored service is inspiring. There is actually a great deal to see and experience in the Amphitheater area of the grounds. Between all the folks in my family we experienced the changing of the sentinel three times, got to hear Taps played twice and the striking of the Carillon a couple of times as well. Again I say, if you’ve never been, try to find a way to experience theses hollowed grounds.

Thanks...some better...still feels rotten...poor feller...wished I could do it for him.

I know exactly how you feel. There’s nothing worse then watching you're young’ns dealing with illness. You just can’t fix that, and since being a dad basically means that you’re the one that fixes what ever is broken, not being able to just jump in there and solve the problem is frustrating in the extreme. Hope he start doing better soon and you take care as well.

Anyway, I gotta say that the next person who tells me Disney is "too expensive" is going to get smacked upside the head.

Again, I gotta’ agree. All trips end up costing me just about as much no matter where we go. I’m tracking our daily expenses while we’re up here in DC, and it’s pretty much running on par with a the daily out lay at WDW. But all trips are what you make of them, and some folks just don’t know how to let themselves become part of the moment. They seem to expect others around them to just “hand over” the experience rather then finding it for themselves and focus on the ultimate bottom line with no thought to the total value received for the dollar spent. It’s hard to compare dissimilar places, but you really do get more then you expect at Dis. And it’s still one of our absolute favorite places to be.

I totally understand that. We've done the math ourselves, and found that a vacation in WDW is just about the same (assuming we drive) as Wisconsin Dells. For those not familiar "The Dells" is a very touristy area of Wisconsin - lots of water parks, resorts, shows, etc. And The Dells is only a 3 hour drive from here. You just get so much more out of a Disney Vacation that paying that extra amount seems totally worth it.

While I’m here, I just want to throw a big ol’ shout-out to the guys that are jumping in and saving the Caption Contest. That’s what Dads do!! Thanks and… “way to go”.:thumbsup2

Now if I could just get my wife to understand this type of logic...

:sad2::sad2:

It really depends. With a family of 5, I think our trips to Disney tend to be more expensive than our other trips. But then again, we've flown down the past couple times (due to it being during the school year). If we drove, we'd save money.

I think you're dead-on when you talk about the value for your money, though. I save money by staying at the Holiday Inn Express, which is fine, but it's not as memorable as a Disney resort. Our Disney trips tend to be among the most spectacular and memorable, and it's hard to put a price on that.

Grrr. Southwest Airlines finally put September flights on sale today, so I went to book them for our trip. I had a credit from last year that I had to use before Aug. 8. No problem, I thought. I'm buying the tickets in June, so it's a non-issue.

Wrong. Apparently, the policy is that TRAVEL must be completed by Aug. 8. So I can't use it for my September flights.

I called about an extension, but no dice. I guess it's my bad for not understanding the policy. :headache::(

For all the Dole Whip lovers out there, I found this recipe for the mix for anyone with an ice cream maker. I'm hoping to try this with our son's ice cream maker, if we can find it in all the boxes in our garage!
Ingredients:
1 qt Pineapple Juice (Dole, of course)
1 tsp Vanilla extract
3 cups whipping cream
3 cups sugar
Milk

Well, I tried the recipe and it was too vanilla. I will modify the recipe and get back to you. I am thinking going with 48 oz pineapple juice, 32 oz of whipping cream, 16 oz of milk with the 3 cups of sugar. I'll mix it up and let you know.

Good News Story For the Day:
It appears Small World will be closed all but the last day of our trip

This is bad news for me. My dds (8,6) like IASM so I like IASM. Yes, the song gets stuck for days, but it one of those dad badges we earn.

I will. Should we start our own or just continue the existing?

Since you're the only one who voted for me, I'll follow you over to the new thread.

Father's Day...Tiny (DS10) woke-up feeling bad...ended up with a really bad Stomach bug.

I feel for you. It was not my stomach, but I felt like I had the flu Sunday and Monday (all achy and fever), but never any congestion.

I hear ya. We went there for Spring Break and when it was all over, realized we would have spent the same or maybe less at WDW. And, while we had a good time, we had more fun at WDW. So, we did a small DVC contract add-on so that we can do a Spring/Fall Break trip every year.

Well, now you just have a really good excuse to take a quick weekend trip this summer.;)

I know trennr bought the actual Dole Soft Serve mix and has had good results. Note sure how it would work in a regular ice cream maker, however.

Since you're the only one who voted for me, I'll follow you over to the new thread.
:woohoo: Woo Hoo! I have a follower!

I'm tempted to yell "ROAD TRIP!", but these are airline tickets, and "PLANE TRIP!" just doesn't have the same ring to it. :sad1:

I like the way you think! :thumbsup2

Yeah...the credit is enough that I don't want to waste it, but not enough that it would make for a free trip for the Mrs. and me to anywhere worth going (according to the summer airfares posted).

Gotta love flushing money down the toilet! :wave2:

Certainly you are not suggesting that the Smokey's DW is not up to par with Orlando's DW. :lmao:

I'm a Super Pass holder at Dollywood and Splash Country. :thumbsup2

I'm afraid to admit that the Smokey's can get a little pricey in the Summer and during the Fall when the Leaves Change. We only live about 2 hours away...so we usually drive down for the day and spend most of our time at either Dollywood or Splash Country...

We've really gotten our money's worth out of those Super Passes too...I've been to Splash Country 3 Times...DW and Kids have been 4...and I've been to Dollywood 1 Time...DW and Kids 3. All this for about $500...and DW's is a "Gold Pass" which covers parking fee and we get a discount on Food and Merchandise. So for "locals" the Smokey's can be a "value."

However I can see if I were to travel there and spend a week...I couldn't come close...I checked into renting a Cabin for just a weekend back in March...:scared1:.

Also I know that if I had to eat out any significant amount I would go Ba-roke very quick. (Yes that was a jab...at someone. :rolleyes1 )

I'll be heading to Myrtle Beach in a few weeks...now while the Condo for 10 we are going to be in cost about what my Sept Disney Vacation for 4 will cost...but that's no food...no parks...just lodging and a Beach Front Balcony.

Going to WDW and having a Dining Plan...and having the option of paying for it up-front...I really don't think Disney can be beat for value.

I believe that "value" means quality for what you pay for...granted we have memories from our other trips...but we catch ourselves always comparing our experiences to a Disney vacation. :thumbsup2

Got a mailer from our Disney Visa...where they offer 3x reward points on certain purchase types. Gas, Groceries, Dining, and Airlines. Guess it doesn't hurt to sign up...but reading the fine print. not sure it would help.

Only works from July-Sept. Only works if the vendor sends them appropriate info specifing that items are one of the above types.

Anybody else had luck with this type of offer? :confused3
