I've been on Metformin for 12 years now with no weight gain at all.....that is why Dr.'s like to give it to you as it doesn't cause weight gain. They say it can actually help you to get the weight off....although not me!;) It can give you a very upset tummy though.:guilty:

The weight fell off me very easily, maybe it was the metformin? I wasn't dieting - I was just eating a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean meats, no sugar, no salt, nothing processed. I feel I million times better and look great again. :)

Dh and my Dad are both Type 1. Dh is on the pump and Dad is on injections. Dh lives a very active life and handles it well. Education and testing are key. I am adding a funny twist on my trip report (in the pre-trippie stages right now though) so stay tuned!

Ok, so I had some bloodwork done Monday and got the results Wednesday... my A1C is now 6.1, which I understand is good. My doctor seems pretty happy about it. Only problem was higher than there should be triglycerides at 257, but she made a medicine adjustment and thinks I should be OK. All my other numbers were fine, she said. Sugar level was 105....

All in all, not too bad, but due to a new job where I work, losing weight is SUPER tough now. I sit in a chair for 8 hours a day, and really am not supposed to leave it except to go to the bathroom....

Hi PD, glad to hear your numbers are down....

I'm doing pretty good, I will have to go for an A1C in January. I'm feeling good though and exercising everyday. I was just on a cruise and in France and it was hard to watch what I was eating - the food was so great. Gained 4 pounds over 3 weeks, not too bad, will work on getting back to normal after Christmas.

BTW, how are the rest of you doing? :)

Hey PD... Sorry you had to join this thread, but welcome! :grouphug: My fasting numbers have crept up into the 100-105 range and I'm not too thrilled about that. My own darn fault. For the last month I've eaten poorly. I continue to be a good boy when it comes to exercising, but I know that's not enough.

This time of year is soooo hard with all the fudge, cookies, etc that find their way into my house. My next A1C is will be in March, so we'll see then how it's affecting me.

I take Metformin 3x a day and have no problem with it. It's cheap and effective -what's not to like?

I'm new to this thread and just saying hi. I've been type II for about 8 years and have controlled things pretty well with diet and oral meds - metformin and prandin. A few months ago my A1C jumped up to over 10, probably partly as a result of starting to us Advair and albuterol regularly for breathing issues. We added Actos the the medication list and got the A1C down to 8.4, which is still way too high. Need to keep working on the weight. But I will be starting on insulin (Lantus) in January. I am dreading the shots and for some reason I hate the thought of regularly testing by blood glucose even more. Something about those finger sticks just gets to me. I"ve always resisted doing them but will now have to suck it up and do what needs to be done.

Well I am so-so as far as daily readings, I'm due for A1C next week. The first half of this 3/month my numbers were high (stress!) as I was being tested for a separate medical problem and didn't handle the stress well; my daily readings dropped about 20 points overnight when I got an "all clear". But I'm not eating as I should and know the next 2 weeks will be hard as Christmas approaches and goodies galore appear everywhere! I've got to do more than 20 minutes of exercise a day, I know....duh. Hard to change long term habits.

:jumping2: Just bumping to see how everyone is doing
and for any newbies out there. :jumping2:

What's your BS?

I'm 109 right now.

I'm at 122. I kinda suck. Usually I'm just over 100 around this time of day.
I walked 40 minutes this morning, ate the right stuff today. I suck.:guilty:

Oh, you don't suck. I have the benefit of an insulin pump, but sometimes our bodies just seem to reject all the things we are doing right and give us a high BS for no reason we can find. It's frustrating. I think type II have a much steeper hill to climb in their day to day control.

I'm doing OK but not as good as I want. My fasting # stays over 100 a lot. :sad1: Of course it's my own stupid fault for not eating better. Another thing, I jammed my little toe Friday night and it has hurt so bad that I haven't walked like I should these last couple of days. I haven't had so much as a Tylenol for any kind of pain in 20 years, but I'm wishing for some pain meds right about now.

While I'm moaning (glad you asked :goodvibes ), I went for my annual eye exam this morning. The doc said I have the beginning signs of macular degeneration. :scared1: :scared1: This isn't related to my diabetes, but it sure did come out of left field. How the heck does a 43yo guy expect to hear he has macular degeneration? Looks like I'll be doing some research tonight.

Sorry to hear about your health woes, Zippa. 43 was only a little over a year ago for me, but it was a really bad one healthwise. I didn't expect to start falling apart before hitting 50, or even 60.

Thanks for listening. :thumbsup2 I KWYM about the falling apart before 60... I am just not expecting this. I'm sure I'll feel better about things in the morning after having a small pity party tonight.

Zippa, hugs for the macular degeneration.......hope your research finds something promising.

I changed jobs since my last post, and my job is so much less stressful. No yelling, no drama, just doing my job. My last A1C was okay but I cheat too often. I just want to quit fooling around and take this seriously, easy to say I know.

You all take care!

sorry.... posted in the wrong thread. Meant to post it in the diabetic thread.

Last year my wife was diagnosed with the 'wet' form of macular degeneration. Up until very recently that was an irrevocable sentence to blindness in a short time. However, in 2006 a new drug was approved, Lucentis, that literally stops progression in its tracks, and can even reverse some of the damage. My wife has thus far received two shots of Lucentis (in the eye) and she has been doing excellent.

If, as I suspect, you have the 'dry' form of macular degeneration, your doctor will no doubt prescribed vitamins and EXERCISE. My opthalmologist even declared (to my father, who is 83 and has the dry form) that daily exercise has been shown to prevent development/progression of the dry form of macular degeneration.

Blood sugar levels: mine average around 125 fasting. My latest A1c was 8.2 percent, which is the lowest I have ever had. I started out Type II ten years ago, and now am Type I on insulin (I had an illness that damaged my pancreas, and as it slowly stopped producing insulin my medications and insulin slowly increased).

I do recommend edietshop.com, which sells a lot of excellent sugar-free products. I also recommend raw Blue Agave (a maple-like syrup that comes from a succulent plant; get on Amazon or health food store); this syrup is delicious on pancakes, etc, and has a very low glycemic value, even compared with honey.

I also have been a big proponent lately of "frozen banana ice cream", favored by the 'raw food' people:

Chop up couple bananas and freeze solid (overnight).
Place frozen banana pieces in blender or food processor, add 2 teaspoons or so of vanilla extract, and one or two tablespoons of Agave. Blend until consistency of ice cream. Serve. Enjoy. Make more.

To make 'chocolate' banana ice cream, I simply add (after serving) a tablespoon of Chocolate Cool Whip (yes, it does have some sugar). My wife likes to add coconut oil. Or, just pour more agave over it.

Good luck

Does anybody else find that dark chocolate is not so bad for your sugar levels? Not that I can pig out on it, but I dont get much of a spike from eating 3-4 dark chocolate Hershey's Kisses. :woohoo:
