Alex we need it so that after we have looked up our Disney info we are looking for or posted to a question someone has asked us we can then go and talk to other consenting adults about current topics and have a place that is there for us to freely debate things and yes in some cases get called names but if you are worried about having someone call you bad names you had best stay away from the public.

Well, not to be antagonistic or anything... But why does a Disney site need a "Flower & Garden" board, or an "Eating Healthy" board, or a "Cooking, Crafting and Scrapping" board?

There is no particular reason it needs a debate board -- other than it likely did keep other forums from getting that content in the first place. But the same can be said of a large portion of the other boards on this site. It is certainly your decision to make, but frankly, it doesn't appear to be consistent. Oh well, I won't lose any sleep over it.

Well said Katerkat. ITA with your statement.

It doesnt' "need" one katerkat.. it's a decision that we want to have one. Management made a decision that we don't need a debate board.

Alex, I don't think the DIS needs a debate board because it's a Disney site, I think that it needs a debate board because any successful site will get its share of flakos, and it's handy to have a spot to accommodate them!

I personally feel like I've lost something that I hadn't realised was so important to me, but the varied, if sometimes wacko, opinions voiced on the DB were so interesting. Yes, some people were out there just to stir things up, but all you had to do was put them on ignore, and any post that person made came up as "This person is on your ignore list, click HERE to view their post". Such a wonderful feature!

I felt that the DIS Debate Board was a wonderful place for people to sound off in a world that is getting increasingly busy, and I think the DIS is lessened by the loss of the DB. However, as I've said previously, I know it must not have been easy for the Mods, and would like to thank them for all their efforts.

:confused3 I'm just saying - you asked why we "need" a Debate Bord. Obviously we don't - but we don't also "need" some of the other sites, like the eating forum, the scrapping forum and the gardening forum. Those also don't have much to do with Disney.

And I totally respect the management's decision. I had to change my DIS link from the DB to the CB in my Favorites, but I'll live. I was just answering your question. ;)

I have been a member of this forum for quite some time. I come back to it from time to time because I long for WDW and enjoy the virtual company. I need to get back into the chat room and take one of the virutal tours of one of the parks. When I first signed on, I believe the "Dis" was still quite young and Pete was just begining to realize how big it was going to get. I believe it was the intention of the Dis to be the place where people could share the magic of WDW. The webmasters have to do what they feel is in the best interest of everyone and to keep it in the spirit it was started for. Remember, A LOT of young people read these forums! IMHO, the Dis needs to be kept in the spirit of what it was started for. True, I read and posted on the debate board, but I understand and will now spend more time on the other Dis forums.

Keep up the good work webmasters!:earsboy: :

:( I'll miss it. Alex, you've started a debate or two over there, so you could probably answer as well as anyone else the question of why to have a DB. I don't know, I didn't create it.

But anyway...like I said, I'll miss it and hope to see other DBers around somewhere. :D

Ah well.....it was bound to happen.

I have to admit that as much as I used to enjoy posting there it really wasn't very enjoyable these days. I was getting very tired of the "Libs suck" attitudes of some of the posters.

Alex,

You indicated that we can debate subjects as long as we followed the "debate guidelines." If we are to debate a topic, where do you suggest we post the debates?

as long as you follow the "board guidelines" which I linked to

I totally agree with the fact that it IS managements decision whether to have a debate board or not. What I am having trouble with is the RATIONAL that was posted for it's demise.

"""We are constantly evaluating the various boards on the DIS to make sure that they further our primary purpose, Disney travel planning and a Disney community.
It has become apparent that the Debate board has not added to that purpose for some time."""""

What is good for the goose is good for the gander IMHO. Following that line of thinking, therefore any other board that does NOT further disney travel planning and a Disney Community should suffer the same fate.

I will survive without the debate forum.

How come?

I see this scenario: people get nasty here with the namecalling and repetitive back and forth crap and then the CB goes bye bye. For as long as I've known Pete his vision has been in Disney planning, not "debate" or even just back and forth chit chat. I'm sure if it gets out of control with breaking guidelines here, they'll figure its not worth the hassle of having the community aspects of this site and stick to the planning portion. I hope that doesn't happen, but I wouldn't be surprised one day if it did, especially if it gets too much to moderate.
I am confused, are you saying that you can forsee a time when the DIS would cease to be a discussion board and would instead be a internet board that provides solely planning information and travel arrangement services for WDW trips???
IMO, I think such a change would greatly, greatly decrease the amount of hits per day, this site would get. I could be wrong, but wouldn't this be the opposite of a internet website's goals???

I'll take a shot at answering the question WebMaster Alex....

& admittedly, I may not be as succinct as a regular DB poster might be ...only because I hardly ever went there...by my choice...i hang out at the CB and sometimes the camping board....

anyway....here goes...

people that love/admire/get thrilled by Disney and things related to Disney..most epeciallly the DIS boards....are of all ages, all walks of life....and literallly from all over the world...

we are all different though...but share the like of Disney...that is our common thread...

over the years..the DIS Board membership grew...and the nmber of boards grew with the increases...because we are all different...we share different interests...

the (may I?) wisdom of the past..was to accomodate these differences and increasing numbers... by creating new boards...including the debate board...

BUt, the membership has not decreaased...the interests haven't changed...yet there is one board less...

perhaps, it may have been wiser to 'police" the DB board better...instead of canning it...

that way...those who liked the DB would still have their "part of the DIS"...that was...created for them and those that went before them...

in conclusion...it is the right of those on high to do what they wish...i respect that....yet can't help but feel that better "policing" ...or at the very least...some advance warning of closing......would have been more apporopriate...

With all Sincerity,

So, if we follow the posting guidelines, when can debate topics anywhere?

I think you did a damn fine job answering the question!

"perhaps, it may have been wiser to 'police" the DB board better...instead of canning it..."

Stands Claps and Whistles!!

I have to say Alex that probably the biggest contribution to the death of the DB was removing Nikole as moderator.

She didn't take crap from either side and she was fair.

Excellent post Brer Papa and now the folks on the CB are going to hate those of us that like to debate because it will interfere with the CB and they will now have to try and skip and sort through all the topics so as to not see some of the debates.
