The debate board.. please read

I will miss the DB so much; although I didn't partake too much (my problem being having too little time to follow up on posts I made in debates), it has been a very important part of my day to look at what people are saying on the Debate Board.
Being a European who has lived in the US, it is always of great interest to me what American opinion is on various topics, and although some opinions were WAAAAAY off base, it was always possible to see some genuine opinions of everyday Americans on topics of interest to people over this side of the pond.
I will say that I think having a thick skin was a prerequisite, once you had that, the Debate Board could be a fascinating place to be. In the last few days I had been pleased to see that the range of topics was widening, and I was looking forward to interesting debates ahead. Not to be, it seems.
I would like to thank the Mods on the DB, I know it was a tough and thankless job. You can't please everybody all the time but I know you did your best. If there is some way that you can think of, of having a limited Debate Board, I think many of us would be eternally grateful. If not, well thanks anyhow, there's been a lot of priceless entertainment (some of it very shocking!) for quite a long time. I will never forget it.

I can't say that I'm sorry to see it go, I was afraid of going there...but....does that mean that all of those "mean and nasty" people are going to look for a new place to hang out? !

:wave2: All those "mean and nasty" people have been posting on all the different boards of the DIS for a very long time. Some don't notice because they "expected" certain things on the debate board and truthfully when they went there that was all the "looked" for. But look around "Debate Board Regulars" are everywhere ;)

Yes they are and now soon to be in your house on the CB to for debates.

Oh, oh, this is the kind of thing that got me into trouble once. I hope that I didn't offend the DB folks by that comment, I didn't mean that ALL the people there are "mean and nasty", just wondering if the ones that ARE "mean and nasty" will be looking for someplace else. Please don't take offense, it was not my intention at all.:( :) So sorry if it was taken.:guilty:

I don't know about others, but I'll be spending a lot more time on the Laughing Place boards. They have a "Current Events and World Affairs" board teeming with liberals that need to be set right.

PM me a link please. It won't be long before withdrawl symptoms start.

I wasn't offended. I just think it's funny that some folks think that Debate Board Regulars only posted on the debate board - we didn't - we post in almost every board on the DIS. We had DVC members, cruisers, folks with disablities, etc on the Debate Board. IMHO There were no truly "mean and nasty" people on the debate board - just passionate people who sometimes let the heat the of the discussion color their words ;)

I see this scenario: people get nasty here with the namecalling and repetitive back and forth crap and then the CB goes bye bye. For as long as I've known Pete his vision has been in Disney planning, not "debate" or even just back and forth chit chat. I'm sure if it gets out of control with breaking guidelines here, they'll figure its not worth the hassle of having the community aspects of this site and stick to the planning portion. I hope that doesn't happen, but I wouldn't be surprised one day if it did, especially if it gets too much to moderate.

Actually, I saw a thread on the CB where other posters just about ripped a guy to shreds, so nowhere is safe....;)

I posted it in the other topic, and I'll post it here too:

From the posting guidelines themselves...

We do not believe in censorship, and open discussions about various issues is encouraged.

Would these 'various issues' include what shade of green Tinkerbelle's dress is or how many times Scar rolls his eyes?

Contrary to what some might like to thing, for a community of any sort to grow and thrive, it has to, well, you know have somewhere to grow.

I am a huge Disney fan, but one reason I was drawn here was because it was such a hotbed for activity of all sorts... and in my short stay here, the Debate board was, by far, the most interesting on the site. I'm a regular forum junky: I'm a member of various online communities, and the debate forum here had perhaps the most well-spoken, intelligent people of any board I'm a regular visitor of. THAT's what kept me here.

I stop in on the "Disney-oriented" boards occasionally, but generally speaking, that's because I'm going on a trip in two weeks. After I get back, why does it matter after that? Why should it matter to anyone? The community board remains intact, yet it does nothing to "further the purpose" of the site... why is the debate board any different at all? I'd be inclined to think that the ultimate "purpose" of any message board is to retain a large, diverse group of people with an established sense of community... the idea of centering it around Disney is a tertiary descriptor, nothing else. We're all here, we all love Disney, but should we drop the other elements of our lives at the door?

I've been a member of GameFAQs.com for almost four years, yet, I rarely talk about videogames there. The forums have erupted into some of the largest social boards on the internet, united by a common interest in videogames... from the War on Terrorism boards, to 'Life, the Universe and Everything,' there are thousands upon thousands of members. The REASON, of course, is that most users have a sort of "forum conglomerate there:" There's not much of a need to go elsewhere to converse about things online, because everything is at their fingertips.

I think the only thing you're doing here is sending a strong message that you don't really give half a damn about the people who frequent the debate board: You don't perceive a need to have it, but I assure you, there's less of one to take it away now that it already exists.

Oh, and can I also go around and point out when I find a topic that does not "further your primary purpose?" I bet I could find thousands.

ITA --- What's that verse in the bible?

"He That Is Without Sin Among You, Let Him First Cast a Stone."

I've also read threads where "regular" CB members shredded people because they didn't agree what others may have stated. Hypocritical, if you ask me!

I think everyone is missing the point somewhat. We don't have to have a "pornography" board or a "beer board" or a "folk song" board. We don't have to be all things to all people. I stated we would allow debates as long as they followed board guidelines. I don't think anyone can argue that a board of this type is allowed to and needs to have guidelines. I guess I'm not sure what point everyone is trying to make.

I can't speak for other people Alex, but I can take my best guess:

My understanding is that the debate board was created to keep debatable type topics which get heated and are not all "shining light and pixie dust" off of other boards. Yes, people got nasty and downright mean, but if you went to the debate board you kind of expected that. It was understood that it wasn't a pixie dust board. While it may have nothing to do with Disney, neither do the flower and garden board, cooking, crafting and scrapping board, the community board... yet those remain. Many people loved the debate board and when you take that away from them, yet leave other boards which have nothing to do with Disney, it sends a double standard out. "We want you here as long as you are all pixie dust and light, and if you aren't, we'll just say you're subjects aren't Disney and be done with you."

Other people have been here long enough to realize that all of those debates will now be taken to other boards. Which brings you back around full circle to where you started - creating a debate board to keep those debates off other boards.

It's like being on a merry go round.

Well put jipsy and they are starting onthe CB allready

Well I'm mean and nasty and have posted on all the DIS boards! I post mostly on the resort and community boards but have been known to frequent the debate board also. So once again your question makes no sense. We, the mean, the nasty, the ugly, have been and always will be here to stay.:thewave:

Well that would be a sad day for me! I have never been to the planning board nor ever intend to be there. If the CB goes, I'd probably go. :( The CB is too much fun.

Well Jipsy.. kind of but not really.. the debate board was originally created as a place to move stuff too... when we polled the mods we found out that hardly anyone did anymore, stuff was just deleted.
It had basically become a "free standing" board and one that didn't contribute to the site.
So far nobody has been able to answer my question on WHY a disney site needs a "debate board"

Well Pin Wizard by the definition given the CB doesn't fit the guidelines of the DIS boards either so watch out it may go next.

As sad as I am to see this, the Debate Board brought this on itself IMO. Some of the regulars spent an awful lot of time attacking other posters (particularly one guy!) and the actual rules of debate were rarely followed by these same people. I was recently attacked myself by someone for no particular reason and it's a shame that certain people kept behaving like this.

I might have to peek in on Laughingplace.com to see what their board is like. There are also a few other sites who still have the debate formats.
