I found the search engines. There is a basic one available at http://www.ellisisland.org/

This one searches pretty easily if the name is an easy spelling or you are sure of it.

Another site:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/

This one can search with more specifics and also can do a "sounds like" on the name. This worked great for Phil's Greek names that had about 6 different spellings depending on what the agent wrote down. We also used this to see all of the other people that came from the same towns and were able to locate the records of more distant relatives.

Also, once we found the spellings on the 2nd engine, we would go back to the ellisisland.org one and look up the name again. From there you can see scans of the actual manifests they were listed on. You can also see pictures of the ships they travelled on.

It was really neat to be able to compile all of this information on people we barely knew the names of, let alone much else.

Thanks Tia!

I really want honest answers. I just don't like some of your answers as much as others ;)

My vote is for Caroline. I think it is a really sweet name and a know more Laurens than Carolines.

Maybe you can make the trip to see the icons at ASMo and talk that up quite a bit during this trip so that on the next trip you can stay there and save the money.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest! :goodvibes

Thank you from Daniel!!

Yea, what were we all doing around September 1998?? :lmao: ;)

I know for a fact that it was August 19, 1998 for me, but that's already TMI, so we'll leave it at that.

I was planning on a great night on the thread, but I have to go now because we just got a very sad call. I don't know if you remmeber me talking about a friend of ours DD who was sent to WDW in late Apr from Make A Wish. She was only 10 yrs old and today she passed away after only a year of having cancer. I am so very sad right now. And ti think I was complaining that DH and I forgot about our anniversary, how flipping trivial is that crap. This little girl was fighting to then end and we didn't help the family any these past past few days and now she is gone. I know we couldn't have done anything about it, but I wish I would have done something like make them a meal or something.
I have a few calls to make and a few things to do for the family. I might be back a little later.

Her family (and yours) will be in our prayers. Don't feel guilty, Paula. The family knows that you care and I know that you have done and will do things to help them through this time. :grouphug: to you all.

It depends on how good a fairy you get that night. :teeth: Sometimes the fairy is in a rush to drop off the money (especially if the tooth is lost late in the day and the child wasn't really on the schedule that night.......).

Some nights it 'almost' seemed as if the tooth fairy had forgotten but then Lizzie found the money in my bathroom.

And sometime it "almost" seems as if the tooth fairy forgot, but when you go in to help them look, you realize that it fell to the floor or got caught down in the covers. ;)

Hey Everyone! Does anyone know where I can find the magical beginnings schedule? I'm having a panic attack! I think all of my planning my be messed up!

Here is the link to my friend whose son Jacob (a BBB triplet) died yesterday. I am sobbing with tears pouring down my face. I am so heartbroken. I can't imagine losing one of my trio and how hard that must be for his brothers.

Here is the link to Jacob's page. He is only 3 weeks older than my kids. Heather and I were pg together.

What a beautiful young man. Jacob's family and friends will be in my prayers. I can't imagine losing a child, let alone one of a set of multiples. How hard that must be especially on the boys. Heather's journal entry was beautiful. :grouphug: to you as well, Denise.

I've been thinking because I'm totally baffled by this. Carolyn(n) and Caroline are two very different names here. They don't sound similar at all. Maybe it's a regional thing because here the emphasis is on "line" in Caroline and in Carolyn the emphasis is on "car" (pronounced care).

I thought we'd have more of a problem with Lauren being called Laurie or Laura since here they sound similar when pronounced. I've had my name (Dawn) mistaken for Lauren.

This definitely has me curious. I might have to start a thread on the CB asking people how they pronounce the 2 different names!

My dd (Laura) was called Lauren by her elementary school principal for 4 years. It used to drive her nuts. I would definitely pronounce Caroline with the emphasis on the "line." It is a trickier name, though, and slightly more likely to be shortened.

I'm tired, and heading to bed, but check out my updated signature!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

My sister had her baby at 9:05 PM, June 13. I got to be there, and even cut the cord (my BIL didn't want to)! He is such a cutie!

She named him Sawyer (because it was the only boys name in the baby book her and her husband liked) Howard (after our grandpa).

7 pounds 1.1 ounce
21" long
4 hours of labor! (no typo, just four!)
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Cute, cute, cute, cute, cute!!!!!

That is great. I'm glad everything went so well.

Tia, I would appreciate the Ellis Island information when you get a chance, No rush though. I don't know if we will be able to find much out as Eric's grandfather is not here anymore and his grandmother has said that the family name was changed drastically when they came through.

He may have some luck with the 2nd site I listed then. You can search by originating city if he knows where they came from. Also, if he has any idea what the name was originally, he may be able to find it in the sounds like. Good luck! It took Phil awhile to work out a system to check through various possibilities, but in the end we located the records of about 20-30 close and extended relatives.

With all the sad news last night I forgot to post about Hunter's last game of the season. He plays Rec league so the games are more like scrimages, but to him it was a huge game. In the first inning he was playing second base. With one out he caugt a pop fly and tagged second base to make a double play. He was so proud of himself. Because of his great outfielding the couches picked him to be up first. He had a good hit and made it to second base. He scored the first run for his team. 2nd inning he had a nice play at short stop. They reversed the batting order so he was up last. Another nice hit and he drove in a run. Third inning. His best friend was at bat and he hit a line drive to Hunter at third base. He fielded it and tagged 3rd base to get the last out of the inning. He was up first again and made it to second, then scored another run. We don't really keep score, but I know that Hunter's team killed the other team. Hunter's team batted through their order all 3 innings and the other team got 3 outs before batting through their batting order. ;) :cool1: My parents were both there and Chris's Mom, boyfriend and aunt came too. He was so happy, a very nice ending to a short season. He was floating on :cloud9: Next year they will play against neighboring towns, although we may put him in lacrosse instead.
