HAPPY BIRTHDAY JENNIFER!!!!!

I had a couple odd things happen this weekend and I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the second one.

First-we saw two different proposals this past week. The first was at the Rockies game and was so sweet with both the girl and guy end up crying. The second they both end up crying also but different reasons. This one was at the Nuggets game on national tv the guy gets down on one knee, long proposal, beautiful ring...the girl runs off the court and the guy leaves the opposite direction dejected. Poor guy.

Second- this one kinda creeped me out afterward. We had a piano recital and one of the mom's of one of the young men who played came up and commented on how much Cassidy has turned into a young woman......talking the physical sense her, how she was getting the curves in the right places. This woman and I are friends and I was so uncomfortable...felt like she was sizing Cassidy up for this young man. She did come back and go to mundane stuff. These two will be in marching band together next year. Would you have been creeped out? or am I really nuts?

Well fellow addicts, Bethie just decorated herself in the pudding (w/ bananas and vanilla wafers) that we made last night. As wonderful of an artist that she is, I just can’t take her to gymnastic all sticky and banana smelling. So I am off to hose her down and take the girls to gymnastics class. Chat w/ you all later.

We didn't end up at IHOP. Once I told her that they don't sing happy birthday at IHOP she opted for the 'peanut place' (where you get a bucket of peanuts on the table and you can throw the shells on the floor), otherwise known as Logan's Steakhouse. YUM! Our waiter took her up front and center in the restaurant and announced to everyone that it was her 4th bday and everyone sang. She felt so special. I will post some pics when I have time.

Our Logans closed down we always went there for our work end of year lunch.

I am so FRUSTRATED today!!

I have volunteered for two big things at my church

one is getting workers for our church festival and the other is registration for VBS

This is my first year working on the festival - but I TOTALLY have everything under control - the woman who did it last year is a total control freak and everyone is copying her on every question they ask me - they have done this b/c she started the job and then handed it off to me when I volunteered -

Every time a question is asked - she answers for me - AND has even sent me what I consider a pretty condesending email about what I need to do - I know she is a control freak and having a hard time letting go and I really can't do anything about it - it is just VERY frustrating!!

This is my second year with VBS and we have a new coordinator - she is also a control freak - we discussed redoing the registration form and I told her I would work on it - the next thing I know - she has redone it and sends it out in a format that she had to have known no one else would be able to read (she even said - I am not sure you all will even be able to read this - I just wanted to send it) so I had no opportunity to give any feedback on the form - despite the fact that I am the one who needs to use it -

today I got a mass email from her - she has put blurbs in the bulletin about registration but the form has not gone out yet - and she has begun to get registrations - which apparently she is doing stuff with b/c she has tallies for everyone - she has done nothing to tell me that the forms are there - how does she expect me to do the stuff I am supposed to if she isn't bothering to communicate with me - I just sent her an email - but I really don't think she will be able to let go of this -and if she can't - I really think I might quit and take my kids to visit my sister like I wanted to do but felt guilty leaving her in a lurch her first year with the program - now I feel that she is only keeping us around b/c she feels like she is supposed to

Tell them to either let you do the jobs, or you wil let them both take over and you will go and visit your sister and enjoy yourself. These jobs are thankless enough without having a buttinskis making it harder.

The Junior League of Dallas is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Through funding and volunteer hours (each member volunteers 60 hours each year), the JLD supports community agencies in several different areas:
ARTS AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT
EDUCATION
FAMILY PRESERVATION
HEALTH
POVERTY INTERVENTION
VIOLENCE INTERVENTION

The JLD is part of a larger Junior League association worldwide. It was originally started in the early 1900s by several New York debutantes who wanted to do more with their time than give teas and dances. The girls saw a flood of immigrants coming into NY's lower east side who needed help: the immigrant women needed to learn English, they needed childcare while they were working, their children needed to learn to speak and read English, they all needed healthcare desperately. So the debs started Junior League to help with these types of community needs and more.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a member of the League. Alone, she would go into the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in NY's lower east side. This was unheard of for a young woman in her socio-economic class, and very unsafe. I think the story goes that her father sent a bodyguard with her, but she made him walk many feet behind her and wouldn't let him interfere with her work in the community.

Last year I volunteered at the Dallas Museum of Art, where on Saturdays and Sundays I did art projects with children or sat in a gallery and explained a work of art to the families that came through. This year, I'm on Grants for Innovative Teaching, meaning teachers apply for grants for projects the district cannot otherwise fund. I had 3 school grants I was tracking this year, so went to visit them on Thursday.

... which is how I think I got a sinus infection (soon to be lung infection, knowing my body). I'm not used to little kid germs, and there was a lot of coughing and sneezing going on around me. But reading and playing with the kids was fun and worth it!

As Marci said, Junior League is a big deal in Dallas. Dallas is the largest League in the country with 5,000+ members, with Atlanta's League close behind. Junior League is a tradition in the South. Many women members have grandmothers, aunts, sisters, mothers, etc who are in the League as well. They grow up around the League and join themselves when they are old enough (college age).

To quote a friend of mine's 10 yo daughter the other day, she asked, "Do I have to join the Junior League when I grow up?" "No," said my friend. "But you expect me to," said the little girl. "Well, yes" said the mom. And the little girl was okay with that.

I'm from California, where the League is active, but not as big a deal. My mom wasn't in the League, but I grew up with her volunteering here and there all the time. I joined the League in NY to get involved in the community and to make friends. Then I transfered to JLD when I moved to Dallas. I"ll remain active until I become a "sustainer," which means when I retire from Junior League, usually in your early 40s.

See - that is just not true - I seem to recall you just picking up to go see her recently - and you didn't even have time to post and let us know!!!!

That's true! But you see, I learned my lesson, and would NEVER do that again!

In my defense, that was a very unique situation, and normally I would never think about doing something like that. Much as I love to see my mother, I have a hard time picking up and leaving at a moment's notice.

I think your feelings are very valid - but I am the type of person who would just decide to get over it especially since she works for your stepmom - I would never help her out in the future though!!

Kate -- You're right. By the light of day, I'm over it now. Venting on here to you all helped me get it off my chest and out of my head.

I'm not going to reach out to her again. She obviously doesn't need or want my friendship. I don't have to attend that meeting with her, so I won't. Besides, it's not like she told me which one she's attending!

FFFFFAF (Fun Filled Facts For Friends and Family)



When DH bought his first suite, the guy told him to take a few slivers of a soap bar that we like the smell of, wrap in a bit of tissue (Kleenex) and place it in the bottom of the bag that holds the suit.

I did this in all our dresser drawers and when I store clothes in boxes of any kind. It seems to work well for the stale smell thing. Moths? I have not had any, so I can’t confirm it works for them.

Sorry about all the baby clothes.
I hope Christopher does well in swimming this year.

I'll try the soap for Brian's suits. I won't be storing any more baby clothes except the special ones I want to keep for them and I read Ziplock bags will do the trick. Hopefully that's true.

I joined the League in NY to get involved in the community and to make friends. Then I transfered to JLD when I moved to Dallas. I"ll remain active until I become a "sustainer," which means when I retire from Junior League, usually in your early 40s.

My Aunt is in JL (i think) in austin. Very active told us they are thinking about doing the RISE school in austin for their community project this year.

Kate -- re: your volunteering situation (what is with the drama with our volunteering lately: you, Becky, me... sheesh!)

Honestly, at this point, I would ask her if there is anything you can do with the tallies or the reg forms. Then when she says no, which you know she will, then say well it looks like you have it all under control. Then bow out saying you have a family obligation you need to attend to and since she herself said she had it under control, you won't be letting her or your church down. I'd take J & N and go to your sister's.
