Emotional attachments to my kids' toys holds me back, too. Could you box it and store it in the attic or basement? Asks the woman who still has that kind of stuff hanging around when her youngest is getting ready to turn 7! :rotfl:

Beth

My mother kept all the toys that my brother and I had as children and now she keeps trying to send it home with my kids  My kids have enough toys without sending home my old ones. She also kept our clothes so occassionally the kids will come home wearing something clearly from the 70s. She grew up being frugal. I really have no personal attachment to my kids toys so when they aren't used or peice go missing I clean out. If the kids are really attached to something that they no longer play with (Nick's Disney Beanie Collection) we put them in totes and store them in the attic. Nick thinks his kids might like them someday :rotfl:

Hi. I feel pretty silly lamenting about this, with the more serious problems we all face, but I figured you might be wondering where I've been all day, so here goes:

We lost one of our cats today. We noticed Mickey was acting a bit odd on Saturday, but it was easy to assume he was at odds with Lucy, the other cat. (Lucy is the alpha cat and she typically puts him in his place.) Yesterday, we noticed he was walking funny, so I made him a vet appointment today for when Kevin got home from work, so someone could stay home with Alyssa. Well, when Alyssa and I got back from getting her pictures taken this morning, Mickey couldn't even walk, so I begged Kevin to come home early and I rushed him to the vet. He had a bladder infection and though he survived the process of unblocking him, his heart gave out after the procedure. I feel terrible. He was only seven. And Alyssa keeps asking where he is. :guilty:

I'm going to turn the computer over to Kevin, because I asked him to design our Easter card, but I'll try to check back in later tonight and respond personally to some posts from the last 36 hours...

Amy

Oh Amy,

I can so relate to your pain. My heart goes out to you. It is just a shame that our pets cannot tell us how they are feeling.
:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
Our one cat Gilmore had failing kidneys at 18 months and we had to put him down. It was almost like a wake with all of us each going to see him. When we took him in he was so soiled and looked very let down. I lost it when I went to say my good bye because he was just purring up a storm and the Vet had cleaned him up for us.
Then two years ago Scooter started losing weight and was breathing very hard and when the Vet went to take blood he had a heart attack. It was just the saddest time. Just look at the pictures and remember the good times and loving. Your other cat will seem lost for a while. After Gilmore went, we waited about 4 months before we got Scooter as a playmate for Cobain.
What was also very comforting, was that our Vet sent us a card with each one and waited a few weeks before he sent the bill. We live just around the block from him and he has become a very close friend.

Take care.

Oh you all are putting me to shame!!!! If I can get my windows cleaned, inside and out, this spring, I will be happy.

Speaking of being emotionally attached to things.....what do you all do with the items/projects/papers that your kids bring home from school? I have done a binder with everything for Nicholas' first 2 years of preschool, but in Kindergarten I have collected so much more stuff. It is probably stacked a foot and a half high. I love having his writing samples, pictures he's colored, etc. throughout the year and I thought it would be something nice to look back on. I just need to figure out what I can eliminate and what is a must keep.

I have a cardboard file box that we keep the kids important papers in. If they write a report or bring home something that they consider special such as a great test or wonderful picture we place it in the box, otherwise it goes in the circular file. They usually have a whole folder of work that gets sent home every friday. We always go through it together and complement the good grades, point out the ones that need improvement then get rid of them. I can't even imagine how much we would accumulate if we kept it all.

I want you all to know that I am reading along but can not respond to everyone's posts and you all have yourselves to blame!!!

You are all in my thoughts and prayers in everything I am doing!!!

Which today was putting together a puzzle of the US with Julia and telling her this is where BK lives, this is where Matt lives, this is where the Alyssa that we haven't met lives, this is where Terra lives...and so on!!! :lmao:

So now I am sure you are all asking yourselves why it is your fault that I haven;t got a lot of time to post - SPRING CLEANING!! You all motivated me and I am ready to go in and clear it all out!!

I get emotionally attached to things - I really need to learn to let go of them!! My biggest challenge (besides my basement) will be my toy room - they have WAY too many stuffed animals and toys and they hardly play with them b/c they have too many to decide what to play with or find all the pieces - so I need to condense but I am so emotionally attached that I don't know how to!! For example - we have almost the entire little people town - and I just can't bear to part with it but it takes up so much room!!

I was doing the same thing with a globe the other day! You have all joined the landmark ranks along with various animals and The Wiggles. :)

Good luck on cleaning the toys, Kate! That was my hard part too. I actually have 6 bags of toys in the closet that I cleaned out, but didn't get completely rid of yet. The last few times that I tried to clear out toys, Phil spent the next several days at work calling me looking for different things untill I just told him where everything else was. That of course landed everything back in the playroom. So far this time has been successful so I think everything is going out the door this weekend.

We get all test home in the Thursday folder but have to send them back to school and luckily for me I never get to see them again as I am such a pack rat. The teachers keep them for the year and then they recycle all that paper. :thumbsup2

Another plus of the DDA.....geography lessons for our kids!! :rotfl:

Ok, now I'm beginning to think I've went 'round the bend (as one of my elder relatives used to say) but I'm going to tell you my idea anyway. One of you, don't remember who, commented that it would be cool to have a DDA Pal Mickey similar to Flat Stanley. It got me thinking. I am probably not going to get a chance to meet most of my DDA friends in person, so I was thinking about having Mickey travel around and meet you instead. You'd be responsible to take pictures, sign his passport, get him a souvenir and ship him on to the next person. I'd provide the money for the souvenirs, pictures (unless you have digital) and shipping. He is going on the DDA trip, Japan at the end of June and WDW with me in December.

If I can't meet you all, at least something that belongs to me can share in your lives for a little while. I'd add to his website with where he's been and post pictures.

Is this totally nuts?

Wow! These are some great ideas! You are going to be one with it mom!

Problem is I have so many ideas. So I never know what to do.

That is what is wrong with my life right now. I could probably be a teacher if I wanted too I took classes to do so, etc. I don't like the politics and all the teaching to the tests going on in schools. I would love to do something with kids, that will help them out because there are so many kids out there who don't get to do alot of things but also don't have the things they need.

I have considered a center for homeschool kids, that would have all types of activities, programs, trips, teach classes in various subjects. Open a kids craft center or kids cooking school. Have a camp for all types of kids, where regular kids, kids with disabilities, medical problems, foster kids, kids from all economic backgrounds could experience camp together. An afterschool program for elementary, middle and high schoolers to keep them from being latchkey and out of trouble.

Getting a big location and creating a giant center for kids parties. A mobile craft bus, or mobile science bus or computer bus. Create an organization to help out teachers and kids to get the school supplies and things they need.

I am also considering going back to school and getting a Master's Degree in Nonprofit Management. Or a certificate for computer networking.

I could go on and on. I have so many ideas of things I would like to start and create and don't know what direction to go in. Or I just need an organization to hire me to do something with kids. I just know I want to help others, especially kids.

I'm so sorry. Bladder Infections are common in male cats. Riley has had several. He always lets me know by peeing everywhere. He will often pee in the bathtub and then the blood tinge is very obvious. If he wasn't so good at telling us I'm sure that we would have lost him by now. I didn't realize how common this issue was. I hope that Your Family works through this loss quickly and that Alyssa can adjust. Your other cat Lucy will probably be lost for awhile. :grouphug: :grouphug: :wizard: :wizard: Losing a family member and pets are definately family members is a serious thing for your family. Thank you for sharing.
