The DDA Trouble Free Zone Part 2

Hi, everyone. My doctor's appt. went pretty much like I thought it would. I have a sinus infection -- DUH! And he said he wouldn't change anything we are already doing, other than I need to cut back on my work hours. He's known me for a long time, and gently reminded me that my body might not be able to still take 50 - 60 hour work weeks, now that I'm 20 years older, have two kids, blah, blah, blah, the worse case of adult mono he's ever seen, blah, blah, blah that I need to take better care of myself. I do know that couldn't hurt, but I think there are other options I should try so I'm not so miserable all the time. I'm researching a lot of the suggestions you all made, and there are a number of really good ones I think I will try. If anyone has any other suggestions, I am certainly open to hearing them. The first thing I am going to do, besides take my antibiotic, is make an appt. for a new allergy doctor. Also, after going back to work today to finish up urgent things, I've brought myself over to a Starbucks to enjoy some Chai and kick back andRELAX (woo hoo) until the kids get out of school. (It's too far to go home, then drive back to pick them up.)

As the doctor says, I should feel better in a WEEK!! (Does he realize that a week for a busy parent seems like a MONTH!)

You guys have been so amazing. THANK YOU for listening!

For my Matthew it was peanut butter and almost anything that contained peanut butter.

For Miles it was a bit weirder. Wendy's Frostys and Wendy's baked potatoes. I also had quite a thing for raw onions (in/on things, not by themselves).

Beth

My friend just had a baby and our local health authority advised her not to eat anything peanut related during pregnancy or breastfeeding as it might increase the chances of a nut allergy! I take it this hasn't affected Matthew in the slightest?

Marti -- I hope you feel much better each day and have a fabulous birthday trip. You and Skunka truly deserve a great trip!

Mac -- I am so sorry you missed the opportunity to buy in to DVC. Hopefully, the next call about an opportunity will be a better deal for you and your beautiful family.

Hey everyone, I need some help from you. As a graduate student, I have to teach a portion of a class tonight. I need to get some of your thoughts to help me put my lecture together. So, if you feel like you can, could you please answer the following question, and give a short answer as to why you chose what you did? Thanks.

Which of the following 3 societal trends do you feel have the largest impact on school library collection development:
a. illiteracy - not only the inability to read or write, but also the inability to use information.

b. the decline of school achievement

c. Cultural diversity (determining what is right/wrong; good/bad; secular/religious.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Glynis,

You are making my brain cramp :rotfl: having not been to school since 1968 myself :rotfl2:
Hard to say how it had impact on our kids since they turned out ok and two of them went on to a two year school for Graphic Arts and Merchandising.

There's a link on the uk forum to a video of someone riding EE... http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1005896

You have to go through to Inside the magic - and the file is about 39meg - so probably a no go for dial up!

That yeti looks pretty amazing!!

Can't wait to ride it... if I can be brave enough :goodvibes

So...what's the minimum investment?

Tammi has the most current numbers - or Deb - since they both just signed on. But if I remember correctly the point price right now is about $85 if you buy prior to Feb. 1 using the friends and family 15% discount. I do know that the minimum amount of points to purchase from Disney is 150 points.

Deb - Tammi - am I right???

I just bought our airline tickets for October. I know it's early but I saw a fare on United out of Dulles for $182, and thought that was pretty good. Who knows what will happen to prices once summer gets here. I'm sure I could have gotten it a little cheaper on SWA out of Baltimore, but Dulles is so much more convenient, and we don't have to pay to park.

I don't know why, but trips always seem so much more real once I have purchased my airline tickets. Maybe it's because you can always cancel a hotel ressie, but not an airline ticket! Woohoo!

Yeah!! For me that's when the trip is really real too. That's the main thing that can't be changed (or easily anyway). If I have etickets in my email, then I AM going.

Tammi, we are headed to Pinehurst, NC. She won't travel on 95 from Cincinnati, but that is so sweet of you. Besides she is riding with my Dad. He will hardly stop long enough for you to pee! You gotta go fast! Talk about going commando!!!!

I also live just off I-95 in Florence, SC. If anyone is driving down to Florida, give me a shout out and we can meet.

Safe travels Nancy and Kate. I hope that all goes smoothly. I know the kids will enjoy being together. :grouphug:

Tammi - when are you going in Oct? I think that I am going to try for Oct instead of Dec. I really like the Christmas stuff, but we are going with my whole family in May so I am thinking of spreading it out a little more.

Anyone else have good Oct advice?

Actually, they do make those encyclopedias still. They are incredibly expensive, and have to be replaced every 4-5 years as information changes so rapidly. It's much more cost efficient to buy the software for an electronic encyclopedia. I think you are right, though, about the technology causing a decrease in library collections. Kids just don't go to the library to do reasearch when they can do it online. We spent a great deal of time last semester talking about just that. I just can't imagine a world where books will become obsolete! That is my NIGHTMARE! :scared1:
Remember when the people came door to door trying to sell encyclopedias???

That seems like a whole different world.

Tammi - you are so right about vacations - to me they only seem real when you buy the airline tickets. Yippee! Have a drink for me when you go!
I will! As long as you reciprocate when you are there in a few days! :teeth:

I believe with the 15% discount it brings it down to $83, but I'm not certain. I will know better when I get home and look at the paperwork. Yes, minimum purchase from Disney is 150 pts.

We are going Oct. 18-22, just a quick fix and enough time to do MNSSHP. We have done MVMCP 2 yrs in a row, so now we are going to try something different. Let me know what your plans are once you finalize them.

The base price is $98.00 per point less the 15% discount (by Feb. 1) would be $83.30. In 2005, the dues per year was $573.90 for 150 points. I've been drooling over it for a couple weeks and trying to figure out how we can afford it by the end of the year.

We went last year at the last day of value season, which ran into Columbus Day weekend, and fall breaks... wouldnt you know, everyone had the same plan!! :rotfl: It was crowded, and it was hot, and it did rain... mostly it was crowded...

We did the go early, go early, go early!! Make ADR's few walkups were accepted...

FP ran out for Soarin on the weekend by NOON!! Test Track had late FP times, so go early!! Expect it to be crowded (and if it isnt, BONUS!!) My mom kept having to show me her watch when I was shocked at how long the FP lines were - and we'd only wait 10 - 20 min at most, but it sure felt longer!! Personally I didnt find MNSSHP to be worth $40 for the spectacular fireworks... it was so crowded, wait times were at least 20min in Fantasyland... but if you go for dancing, and seeing the Villians, it is different!! The early parade was cancelled due to rain, so the 10pm parade was 6 deep at least - crowded!! (I checked different spots, it was just crowded!!) I had enjoyed E-ride nights in July, it was such a relaxing trip in comparison!! Some of the adults were so rude, pushing to get the penny candy from all three buckets, after standing in only one line!! (I couldnt believe the lines for candy!!)

This is exactly my argument for DVC, or any way you can make sure you travel on vacation (not necessarily to see family) once a year. Fortunately, DH also likes to travel, so he does agree on that point. He didn't really do much traveling as a kid, and since we've been married we try to take at least one trip a year (sometimes more).

For those that have asked - I gently broached the DVC subject as we were getting ready for bed last night. I said that I legitimately wanted to talk about it in the next day or two, and didn't want him to dismiss it until he'd heard me out. I said you know me - I would never in a million years be proposing that we do this right now (particularly since we won't be back to Disney until likely late 2007) if I didn't think it made some sense and was a good deal. He agreed we could talk about it Friday night.

But then laying in bed, out of the blue he starts asking questions about what type of accomodations? how many points would it cost to do this at this time of year? where else can we go? and we could rent points out if we weren't going to use them?

I consider that a positive sign - we'll see! :goodvibes

Oooh, sounds very promising! Good luck!! :goodvibes

Glynis I hear you on the online research!! Our school has a "plan" that all 5-8th graders have laptops (purchase them on a purchase credit in 5th grade, keep them until 8th grade!) and then get all the TEXTBOOKS online - can you imagine? For right now, it takes so long to iron out "problems" when the class uses the ibooks for simple research, and presentations - I much prefer the faster real paper, to really cut and paste pictures and mount them on poster board and then present... just me tho!!

Have you ever tried wikipedia? I used to send our kids to ask jeeves.com, but havent had much success in the last year or two - wikopedia came up on an NPR story, so I've been using that, and so far, I love it (its free!!) DD wanted a better definition of fiord/fjord and wikipedia was fast, and detail, and had pictures!! http://www.wikipedia.org
