Hi. Well this is inspired by SPAM's Liberal thread. I figured the conservatives could have a nice and friendly chat about politics aswell.

I am curious to see if the Solcial Security Act will go through. I seriously doubt it. If middle-aged people and Senior Citizens think that their hard earned money (that has already been taken from them) won't ever see them again, they won't be so forgiving at election time. Since elections for the house and senate are every couple of years I don't see athis coming to life any time soon. I do think, however there need to be a solution.

I would also be interested to see who will be running on the Republican ticket in 2008. I don't see to many front-runners besides McCain.

You think we can keep this thread friendly? ;)

Just popping in to wish you all good luck with the thread and a good and healthy debate :)

Bye!

Thanks Rich
I don't think anyone wants to talk today though! OH-well I will try again later. :flower:

I'd like to see McCain run. I even know some dems who'd vote for him.

I hear Giuliani's name pop up from time to time, but who knows...

Personally, I think the social security plan is a great idea.

My whole political philosphy is one of personal choice and personal responsibility and I think that giving us more control over our hard earned money is the way to go. If I screw it up, I can only blame myself...but I can also probably learn a little about investing and wind up with more money than I'd be getting on social security anyway...

From what I understand, this won't even effect people who are nearing retirement age now. Also, I thought there would always be an option to not privatize? So I can't even wrap my mind around what people are complaining about. :confused3

I hope you continue with this thread. It has always been my intent to delve into the minds of conservatives to see what your unvarnished opinions are like.

I still think he needs some experience on the National level. I would like to see him as a VP first.

I totally agree. I think the whole idea of PERSONAL responsibility it really lacking in this country. That is one of my major pet peeves with the demos. My DH go round and round about welfare and SS (he's a democrat).

The problem is the Democrats keep saying it will effect them. If you understand what the plan is about, then it should be a no brainer. People tend to not want to look into it though. Some people don't even think there is a problem. Others want the govt to protect what they personally invest. My FIL (another Demo) said if he loses his money he would want to govt to give it back to him. :confused3 This blows my mind. Can you lose money in a casino and then ask the nice manager for it back.

Did anyone else read the latest article by the Treasury Secretary for Bush I? What's his name? Anyways, I read it in the Sunday (3/6/05) San Antonio Express-News. He says we ought to start putting tax $$ into savings accounts when Americans are born. $2000/year. At 6%, it would be roughly $65,000 when they turn 18 & $1,000,000+ at age 65. This sounds good. What am I not understanding? He says it would cost the government (us) much less than we're already spending on SS & Medicare. I'll try to do a search in a few minutes. I'm at lunch & have no time left. Just wondered if anyone else read the article.

I could be one of them but I don't think he'll ever get the nomination. I supported him back in the 2000 primary and look what happened then. I really like and admire John McCain but I fear he is far to moderate for the Republican party of today, it's too bad because I think he'd make an incredible President.

What about Cheney? He hasn't had any health problems lately. At least then we'd get to play the Haliburton Drinking Game! Every time the Democrats say "Haliburton" (since that's all they seem to have), you get to take a drink. We'll all be in AA by the time election day rolls around.

This really has nothing to do with senior citizens - if they are worried, then they are falling prey to the DemocRat fear tactics (since the Democrats "have nothing to offer but fear itself").
I agree. I think it's a matter of how it is presented to them.
One sure way for younger and middle aged people to not see their money again is to do nothing.
::yes::

I read something about this proposal.

What you are missing (at least in my mind) is this - what is $1 million going to buy in 65 years?

And $1 million sounds great right now, but how will it sound when everyone who is 65+ has about $1 million?

$1 million is a lot of money because not a lot of people have $1 million....

A very interseting thought.

Guliani supports abortion rights so the Rep. party will never run him as to not allienate the right. Also agree McCain is much to moderate to get the nod.

I really have to disagree. I really don't see the overturning of Roe v Wade. Maybe some restrictions(ie counsling, waiting period etc) I cannot see them making it outright illegal though.

I think Cheny would be able to campaign well, but I think he is really not interested. Who would want to hear, "Your daughter is gay and even though you may not like it, and we are going to rub in that point, we are okay with it!"

Rudi is kinda like Arnold, popular as social liberals. Might beat Hillary at any rate. I can't imagine who couldn't beat Hillary, really. People either love or hate her. The people who hate her will be sure to vote. I would like to learn more about Condy Rice and see where she stands on things.

DH made a joke about that the other day:

"Yeah you have a woman running for president, could be the first female president. Well, we will see your woman and raise you an African American."

But the mere thought that Rudi would help keep it intact will assure the religious right going away.

This is a great point. Wouldn't that being an interesting race Condi vs Hillary. :goodvibes

I totally agree

The thing that always gets me about liberals is that they are pro-choice on abortion, euthenasia...because they don't want the government telling them what they can a cannot do with their body or in the bedroom ( gay/lebian issues).....but are completely anti-choice when it comes to anything regarding money...ie lower taxes, Private SS accounts....etc. Basically we are too stupid to handle our finances but we are smart enough to have an abortion or choose to die.

This is why I am a moderate ;)

Well I am actually too for the most part....I believe it was EsmereldaX who said on a political thread once that most people want government to stay out of both their wallets and their bodies....or something like that.
