The Conservative - Liberal Debate Thread

No. I don't believe Democrats are anti-military. I believe some Democrats and some Republicans and some Independents are so angry about the war in Iraq they've gone overboard. I don't feel the need to defend Code Pink. I understand their motives but I don't agree with their practices.

My family has a long time history of serving proudly in the U.S. armed forces. My father served in the U.S. Navy is World War II, My brother retired from the U.S. Army as a 'full bird' Colonel, another brother served in the U.S. Air Force and my husband served 12 years in the U.S.M.C. and is 100% disabled from his service. My nephew served four years in the U.S.M.C. and was injured in the siege of Fallujah. Oh, and my family is also proudly Democratic.

I'm not anti-military at all! Good grief, I worked for the military for 9 years and my Dad worked for them for nearly 40!! What I am is anti-waste of military resources-especially military PEOPLE.

I have no problem with the military being used for just cause.

I am also not anti-military. My maternal Grandfather served in the Navy during WWII, my paternal Grandfather served in the military for the Korean War, and my father was drafted for Vietnam. My cousin is currently on his 2nd or 3rd tour of duty in Baghdad.

If you want to learn REAL respect the men and women that serve - be raised by a draftee - yikes!

I am pro-military spending - especially when it comes to pay, health care, and benefits - something I believe the Bush Administration cut. I believe we should invest military presence at our borders and ports which are severely underprotected. I believe in spending to have the best equipment available to protect our soldiers and I definately believe the care in which our soldiers receive after being wounded should be top notch.

I also feel diplomacy should be exhausted before putting our boys in danger, and I believe we should listen to General's on the ground rather then individuals safe at the Pentagon.

It just boggles the mind that an entire group can be blanketly called something. Now if the tables were turned, I suspect you would hear the protest loud and clear. ;)

I fully support the military. It's the management of it and their decision making that I sometimes take issue with. I don't know why some can't differentiate between the two.

A girl scout cookie? You can stop at a girl scout cookie? Man, I have one and I devour the box! That why whenever I see those little fascist brats in their green berets, I run the other way! Girls Scouts are the devil...the devil I tell ya!

And aren't their uniforms BROWN? What's up with that?

The soldier doesn't choose the mission, he/she relies on those above them to choose those missions wisely. I don't blame the soldier for the mission chosen.

Oh, I get it. No "reminder" needed. But surely you're not suggesting we can't get all hot under the collar the same way you do?.............and no 'Airplane' jokes. ;)

And this Liberal admires them immensely for their service and their sacrifices. :)

OK then lets focus the debate.

Should ROTC be welcomed on EVERY college campus without any restrictions? (and no placing the ROTC center at some obscure location)

Should military recruiters be given full access to high school students and campuses?

Yes, if they receive federal funding.

I agree.

Because we're in the middle of an extremely unpopular war, I think we're losing sight of the fact that the military has provided millions of Americans with tremendous opportunities. I'm thinking if we were having this same conversation 10-15 years ago, nobody would have a problem with recruiters on high school or college campuses.

I disagree. The issued with ROTC on college campuses has been going on since the Vietnam war.
