The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

If you might like Broadway theatre history, the Broadway Up Close tours are great!

Thank you for the recommendation. Booked Hippies, Discos & Dogs, Oh My. Looking forward to it. Wanted to do the Hudson Theater tour but it is sold out. We have 1 day with no show booked and I'm considering Death Becomes Her (recommended by my niece) or the Last Five Years. We may hold out and see whatever TKTS has, or not go to a show at all that day.

I finally saw Kimberly Akimbo last week. It was a nice mix of funny and wholesome, and I'd like to see it again.

Also added tour of Gracie Mansion and dinner at Jacob's Pickles. Was going to add New York Comedy Club but their on-line reviews are not good. That, and the $20 pp bar minimum + 18% gratuity brings it to more than I want to spend for mediocre comedy.

I have only seen The Outsiders, but it's my favorite musical of all time now (and I have seen a lot). That said, I was obsessed with both the book and the movie as well, for the last 44 years. I have Stay Gold tattooed on my arm. It did win best musical, and the rumble is the coolest thing I have EVER seen on a stage.

Suffs

The Great Gatsby
My understanding was that Suffs closed. Maybe I misunderstood and it just announced that it will be closing soon.
As far as The Great Gatsby's concerned, it seems to be pretty good. Sarah Hyland, from "Modern Family" took over one of the main roles. and she seems to be doing well.

this won't be on Broadway. Next seasons schedule was just announced for my local theater

I don't like the book, The Great Gatsby. I don't like the movies. The musical was very good. I saw it last October.

It made me want to try to read the book again. I tried, but couldn't get through it.

Spamalot - Fun, silly; could be a great choice if you need a distraction. Monty Python isn't really my thing, but I enjoyed this. Could be a lot of stupid fun - especially if the cast is great.

The Outsiders - Loved this on Broadway last season - I walked out of it knowing it would win Best Musical. Staging is fantastic. That "rumble" is *not* to be missed!

Suffs - A new, original musical with some great music. The original Broadway cast was filmed for PBS I believe - though it may be some time before it airs.

Stereophonic - This is a LONG, not terribly exciting play (unofficially based on Fleetwood Mac) that really depends on having strong actors. It's a very slow moving plot. I was captivated by the performances; though when intermission rolled around I realized that not much had actually happened. I enjoyed it and didn't find the show boring, but I know many people did. I saw it from excellent, close seats and I can't imagine this will play very well in any of the larger touring houses. They did release an album of music from the show so that may be worth checking out before getting tickets; though despite all the tracks on the album, I believe we only ever hear one song in it's entirety on stage.

The Notebook - I've never seen the movie, but I thought this was pretty ok... not life-changing, though it definitely brought on some tears. Some nice music.

Hell's Kitchen - I liked this one... I was not familiar with most of Alicia Keys' music outside of the mega-hits. The plot is pretty predictable, but it was a satisfying night in the theatre.

Great Gatsby - It's changed from the novel, but it definitely has that big, Broadway, flashy feel. Hopefully they're able to keep most of that for the tour. I'm not super crazy about all of the score... some nice melodies in there though.

If you haven't already and you get the chance, give the cast albums for the shows a listen. This is a pretty solid season overall, I'd say!

thank you

Saw The Last Five Years last night. Not good. I actually couldn't wait for it to end.
There was just songs...no emotion, no acting, wooden.
Nick Jonas wasn't as bad as I expected from all of the reviews, Adrienne Warren has an amazing voice.
I felt nothing watching these two. If I didn't know what it was about, I would not have known what it was about. (Hope that makes sense)

Hate when I go see shows and they turn out like that. I saw a local production of Waiting for Godot several years ago and actually fell asleep during the show. My wife had to nudge me awake.
