The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Can anyone recommend a covid test to take 72 hours before the show?

It also says bring a picture of the test or the actual test proof. Pic will do? I'll bring both just in case.

Are you going to be in NYC to take the test or home coming into the city? If you will be in NYC, Quest Labs or CityMD does the PCR tests. They have labs all over the city.Quest is also nationwide. PCR results usually take 12 hours or more to get back. And you might have to make an appointment for the test. So plan accordingly.

In NJ. Can we do a home test? If not we have a pediatric clinic we could arrange an appointment. I just want to make sure we get the results in time.

I don't think there are home tests for a PCR test, but I could be wrong. For some tests, one really needs to get the swab far enough up the nose to get a sample. Otherwise the results may be inaccurate. I have heard there are some tests now which don't need a swab up that far, but I don't know anything about them.

I meant home being your home city where ever you are located now. There are Quest Diagnostic Labs in NJ, they are headquartered there.

If you can't find one close by, go to your pharmacist at your local drug store and ask them if they can recommend a lab near you. They probably get this question a lot. :)

My niece gets tested in college and she does a spit test. I wonder if those are available around us. I'll call around. Thanks!

I was surprised to find out the theaters do accept a negative covid test instead of vaccination proof for people who want to take a religious exemption. I didn't realize that was allowed.
They have to do this as up until the other day children under 12 were not eligible for the vaccine. They also have religious exemption for vaccines in NYC. It is also more accurate than a proof of vaccine.

My son and a friend went to see Wicked tonight on Broadway. He paid $$ for good seats. He said the whole time there was a little girl directly behind him that would not be quiet. Drove him crazy.

During intermission he went to the lobby to get a drink and when they returned they moved up 2 rows where there were 4 empty seats. He said he didn’t even ask the usher because he had such a headache.

He said they made sure to check vaccine cards and that they matched driver’s licenses.

He’s had great times at shows before but unfortunately this was not one of them.

I had a similar problem at wicked ore pandemic. Parents bight their two kids no older than 3 and 6-keep in mind even the Disney shows have age limits. Most theatres won’t let you in unless you are three. The kids wouldn’t stop kicking and we asked them to stop. The mom snapped at us and then the husband argued with her. Her response “it’s MY favorite show and THEIR first and I paid good money for these seats”….I’m maybe wicked which is based off a book that has a very popular movie that scares children isn’t appropriate for them at that age and you should’ve gone to something more child friendly for their first show? Needless to say, the 6 year old screamed bloody murder during the act 1 monkey sequence (the 3 year old was very enamored by it-talked about it throughout intermission).
Basically? There are some people who are selfish and also don’t bother to even research theatre etiquette before attending a show. My parents made my first Broadway show Beauty and the Beast at age five and my second a year later was the sound of music. Both movies I knew very well and I was expected to sit down properly. While nothing scared me that they had to take me out of the theatre (as a matter of fact I apparently fell asleep after be our guest and woke up just as intermission was ending), I was a little fussy during SoM. I actually tried to take the veil of Maria’s head as she came down the aisle for the wedding scene. I was quickly stopped.
It wasn’t until middle school I saw a Broadway show again between funds, a great regional theatre in my area, the MSG and radio city Xmas shows and a plethora of other things. But I can tell you there are many people of all ages who have no respect for any rules of the theatre. It’s a sad reality.
Also I do hope those people asked if they can move down there. You usually aren’t allowed to move unless the ushers tell you.

I am so excited - 2nd row orchestra seats for Phantom of the Opera! I saw some clips of this cast and they great. This is for my daughter's 18th birthday. The cost wasn't bad at all imo.

Just make sure the spit test is a PCR test. If it's the rapid antigen test, you only have 6 hours from the time of the test for the Broadway shows to consider it valid.

If this is one of the tests where they pool a portion of a larger group's tests together, spin it around in a machine then check the whole group's sampling to get the results, if it turns out there IS a positive COVID result, they have to then test each person's specimen individually to find which person(s) are the ones that do have COVID. That may ultimately delay the results instead of speeding things up.

Saw TINA! Adrienne Warren…AHMAZING! Definitely deserved the Tony. The rest of the show….I was actually a little underwhelmed 🙁. The singing/dancing numbers were pretty good (of course Proud Mary was exciting), but the production itself, like the set and costuming, seemed a little amateurish 🤷🏽‍♀️ Almost like a high school production. My sister felt the exact same way.

We are driving to NYC Dec 18 for three days of shows. I absolutely cannot wait! We have never been to NYC at Christmas time and we are huge Broadway fans. Our 2020 trip was cancelled. I got tickets for Moulin Rouge and the Rockettes. We can add one or two more. I can’t decide. We have seen Hamilton, Come From Away, Waitress and Hadestown. I want to see Hadestown again lol but I should pick something new! I am going be so emotional seeing live theatre again.

I am going back for a few days in early December and am having a hard time deciding what to see as well. I am leaning toward Caroline or Change, Company, and the off-broadway production of Baby. I will hopefully have one more spot. I haven't seen Hadestown or Moulin Rouge or Six yet either. Too many shows.

I will have to come back for Music Man next year as well.

Saw the farewell tour of Rent last Sunday, closing night here in Detroit. First time seeing it for us. 2 adult women behind us sang through the entire first act. First started slowly, with the chorus only, then the entire song and included dialogue. We had no idea if Rent has a Rocky Horror aspect to it or not. Obviously, we moved at the intermission. Some people have no sense of courtesy or decorum. 🙄

I have a question and not trying to offend anyone. I have been to four shows on Broadway so not much theater experience. A number of years ago I took my wife to Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesties in London (not a big fan of London) and then a couple years later saw it on Broadway. I was shocked that the London performance was much better. The theater facilities, the organ, the quality of the scenes, etc were much better in London. Is this typical or just the luck of the draw? I expected Broadway to be the better experience and was very surprised that I found the opposite to be true. Was it bad luck? I really do not intend to offend anyone but have carried a question about this for years and just happened on this thread.

I have seen shows both on Broadway and the West End (Wicked, Book of Mormon) and can’t say that I’ve seen a noticeable difference.
That being said, I have seen several Broadway shows where the quality did not seem to be Broadway worthy 🤷🏽‍♀️

The West End theatres receive some or all governmental funding. Whereas Broadway theatres do not. They rely on private funding. The London production is the original production. As that is where Andrew Lloyd Webber and his then wife, Sarah Brightman, (original Christine) live and work, Webber likely put more of his own money into that production to make it as lavish as possible. So, that could be likely why that production got better equipment and subsequent maintenance through the decades.

Phantom has been at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway since the beginning, 33 years ago. (Some shows move over a period of time, as audience size diminishes and to keep costs down.) As it is considered a show only tourists go to, (no huge celebrities now,) I doubt that it has the maintenance level of newer shows.

It reminds me of when I went to see the movie Bohemian Rhapsody a couple of years ago. I hadn't gone to a movie theatre in ages. Prices too high here at $17 per ticket - and that's without popcorn or drinks. I went to an older theatre, known in the past to be more of an artistic theatre, where they show more independent, cultural art films.

I thought, therefore, they'd have the best equipment to see the movie. Instead, I was really disappointed that movie technology hadn't developed very much through the decades. :confused3 I could have sworn the last movie I saw in another movie theatre even had better screen quality. My old TV had a better high-def picture than the movie screen. And I thought the sound quality was kind of muffled and very flat sounding.

But, I loved the movie and am quite a Queen fan. So, I went to see the movie again, in a different theatre closer to home. But, one I thought would be a worse theatre, as it was a movie theatre basically tossed into the Broadway theatre district. The company wouldn't spend much money on that, right? So, I thought.

Instead, the Regal Theatres at 42nd St has the most advanced, state of the art equipment that's out now. Each theatre is sized smaller, more intimate but still has a huge size screen. They have those automated lounger chairs. The image quality blew me away. (And it wasn't a 3-D version.) Yet, it was beyond high-def, with 4DX technology I know nothing about. Colors were so saturated and vibrant. I could see the pores on actors faces. And the crystal clear sound quality blew me away. It was as though I was actually live in Wembley Stadium during one of the most iconic music concert moments in history. (I can't wait to see Top Gun 2 whenever it finally gets released. THIS is the theatre I'm going to.) This is how seeing a movie should be. But not every movie theatre (or Broadway theatre) has the funds to keep up the equipment or production levels so high.

Thanks much for the reply and what you write makes perfect sense. I am similar in that never a Queen fan until the movie. I didn't have any knowledge of the forces driving the group until then, and also greatly enjoyed their songs as I actually sat and listened to the soundtrack. I am envious that you saw it in a theater with outstanding equipment. I am also envious you will see Top Gun 2 there (really looking forward to the release also).

You describe the experience very well. When I saw Phantom in London I was absolutely blown away. It was an experience, for me, of witnessing genius and perfection. It happens extremely rarely in life.

Another London performance that blew me away was David Gilmore at Royal Albert Hall. I saw it just on Blu Ray through an excellent sound system but was astounded by the quality of the performance.

Thanks. I can now set that very long term question aside with a good explanation.

Adrienne Warren is one of the best talents Broadway has seen. Her performance in Shuffle Along was jaw dropping!
