The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I'm glad The Grammys showed a clip of the show. Now I know to stay far, far away and save my money.

I wasn't overly impressed either, but I won't totally dismiss the idea of seeing Hamilton someday. I'm willing to wait until when and if the craze dies down and seats are available at TKTS. I know it might be years. Or possibly never.

Did anyone get lucky last night and score tickets in the new block of tickets released for Hamilton last night? I did!!!! They released a block from the end of November 2016-January 29 2017. I got 2 seats, front mezzanine, matinee 1/29. All tickets in the entire block sold out in 25 minutes!!!!!!! It was insane. I got a text from ticketmaster at about 6:30 and was in a place where I just happened to be in a place where I could be on the computer to purchase through ticketmaster and have a few hundred extra in my savings account. I feel like I both won the lottery and was hit by lightening all at the same time!

Yep! I'm so glad I checked my phone when I did. I managed to get a pair for my sister and brother-in-law, who haven't seen it yet (and we thought it would be a least a year before they could go), and a pair for my mom and me to see it again. Score!! I haven't even told my sister we got them the tickets yet, we're going to tell them when we watch the Tonys, because we know we're going to be annoying the hell out of them when they win so many awards.

I did get to see it with the OBC last summer, and I know a bunch of them will likely be gone by the end of the year, but the show is so spectacular that the right talent will still make it a great night to go. Can't wait!

Well, they sold out of all of their tickets, so that should be easy...

As long as he is feeling good (he has cancer) I would expect him to stay. He took over for Lin after he left In the Heights. I also think Christopher Jackson will stay....

Chris Jackson filmed a pilot called Bull, I believe, that got picked up, so depending whether he stays with it/what the filming schedule looks like, that may play in.

My daughter and her best friend saw Hamilton last night (a friend and I went to Waitress instead), and they decided to stage door. It was madness, but Lin did come out and he was SO lovely to them (and everyone) despite looking dead on his feet.

Just curious- why? When I first listened to Hamilton I didn't like it; I also tend to not like things that get a ton of hype. But after listening to more songs, watching clips of the show and interviews with the cast, I fell in love and can't stop listening to the album.

I am not generally a fan of hip hop and rap and absolutely love the Hamilton Soundtrack. If a was miracleously given a chance to see it I would. Lol. Hoping it comes here whenever it goes on tour.

Going to NYC in June and never been to a Broadway play. Went ahead and got some tickets for Lion King(Friday night showing). Was thinking about taking in a second show on Saturday - maybe matinee. Any suggestions for a first timer? Was think about Wicked or Aladdin but Finding Neverland caught eye because I loved the movie. And seating - obviously some seats are better then others, but are there really bad seats to avoid generally speaking? Thanks in advance!!

Sometimes bad seats depend on the theatre that a show is playing in. I generally try to avoid the extreme sides. Wicked is a HUGE show and I'd suggest sitting in the front mezzanine for that one. All three of those shows are playing in pretty big houses. I would probably avoid the last rows in the Orchestra for Wicked because of it's stadium seating at the back - although I've never sat that far back at the Gershwin, so I'm not too sure how far the overhang of the mezz is... it may obstruct some of the set.
The mezz at the Lunt-Fontanne (Finding Neverland) is HUGE and you can feel pretty far from the stage if you sit too far back up there.
Same thing for the balcony at the New Amsterdam (Aladdin) I sat up there for Mary Poppins and it was not the greatest. I enjoyed the view much more from downstairs.
But I think as long as you avoid the extreme sides and the last few rows of the mezzanine at any of the theatres, you'll be fine!

Hey all! I'm back after a wonderful 5 days and 4 Broadway shows in NYC.

My DH & I saw She Loves Me (quintessential Broadway - made me smile the whole time),
Bright Star (blew us away - Carmen Cusack can SING! And a surprise performance from Steve Martin during intermission was awesome),
Something Rotten (just what we expected and we loved it. So much laughing!)
Les Miz (Hmm. It was good but our least favorite. Still glad to check this "classic" off our list though)

The highlight of our last evening was meeting Lin-Manuel Miranda. He even facetimed with our daughter! :chat: Totally unexpected and incredible way to end our week!

Can't wait for the Tony's!

We met Lin-Manuel on our trip last weekend, too! He was indeed lovely and gracious. Since She Loves Me is the only show I didn't see in the Best Musical and Best Musical Revival categories...we have decided to take the train into the city in early June and see it! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and the girls are excited to see "Flynn Ryder." ;) I personally didn't love Bright Star (have some quibbles with the book and the lyrics), but I will agree with you on Carmen Cusack. She was FANTASTIC! I was bowled over by her lovely, warm performance. We are planning an intimate but splashy Tony party here, so I'm excited, too! It's probably the only year I'll be quite this well-viewed.

I'll ask here because you all have passion and good advice: I'm bringing my daughter and her friend to New York for Labor Day weekend. She's the last of my daughter's friends to have received these trips as their Christmas gifts. We are seeing Hamilton and School of Rock. I had a "surprise" extra show for the other kids and would like to do the same for Emma, but I am having trouble choosing that third show. Most fall openings seem to be after Labor Day, so they are mostly out. Cats will be open, but I'm not interested in that one. What would you recommend for a 14-year-old girl with not a lot of theater experience? (I took Em to the touring company of the Lion King and we're seeing the Matilda tour at the end of the month, but that's about it.) I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with this--with the other kids I found it much easier.

My first thought is Wicked. I'd also recommend Fiddler on the Roof because it's such a good show. I fell in love with that show in middle school.

We saw Fiddler last weekend (one of the other kids' Christmas trip). My goodness, I thought it was just beautiful! Danny Burnstein was out, but his understudy was wonderful. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing it again. I do think Emma would like Wicked as well, and though I've seen it several times, I've never seen it in New York. Thanks for the suggestions!

So upset Tuck Everlasting is closing on the 29th. So we're going this weekend instead of June 22nd...

I'm glad you were able to change your plans. I didn't love Tuck, but my girls did. I'm very sad for all involved that it's closing so very quickly. :(

That age I'd go Wicked! It was the show that made me fall crazy in love with musical theatre at 17.

I would absolutely agree with this! We saw this the first of our 5 times, when my dd was 10, and she was completely awestruck by it! It is no longer her absolute favorite, but it was the start of her obsession with musical theater as well. It is easily still one of my top favorite shows also.

That's definitely a frontrunner for me. My daughter and I have seen it several times, but Em hasn't and I think she would love it.

So glad you had a great time!! I adored She Loves Me, but I also have a special place in my heart for Laura Benanti and Jane Krakowski, since I have seen them in their amateur days! Zachary Levi was the most charming actor I've ever met! I'm with you - couldn't get the smile off my face!
I really want to see both She Loves Me and Something Rotten again!

What is everyone's thoughts on the Spring Awakening Kickstarter campaign to get their Tony Award performance funded?

I'll admit I loved the show (both versions and have a tattoo of some lyrics) but something seems very off about their goal.
