The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Spiderman is STILL having technical difficulties?? We saw it in previews in December of 2010, thought they would have it figured out by now :sad2:

I'm going to see Anything Goes on Sunday; so excited to see Sutton Foster again, she is the best!

Sutton is so good in this role and Joel gray is also great. My dd think she loves him. :)

We were disappointed that neither of them came out to sign after the show.

I saw Tony Vincent alooooooooooooong time ago when he was trying to break into the Christian music scene. :lmao: Was not impressed. Was very surprised to see that he was in American Idiot. Haven't seen the show, but from what I heard on the cd and saw on youtube I was impressed.

I saw Tony Vincent as St Jimmy in American Idiot twice, and Billie Joe as St. Jimmy twice. They were both great.

I missed Tony Vincent in the Jesus Christ Superstar revival on Broadway a few years back. The understudy we saw had a cast on his wrist, and I found out from a friend who worked on the show that the guy had broken his wrist falling into the orchestra pit during a performance about a week earlier. :scared1:

Anything Goes was fantastic, a real all out extravaganza! Sutton Foster is one of my favorite actresses, she was wonderful. Joel Grey was very funny. This is a show I would see again in a heartbeat - if you want to have a great time and come out of the theater smiling, see this show!
:thumbsup2

:scared1: Yikes! I have come close to falling into the pit when I did Music Man many eons ago. I remember when my school did Jesus Christ Superstar there were some "technical" difficulties with the cross and our Jesus used some not very "Jesus like" language. :lmao:

I :lovestruc both of them, but I can't stand Anything Goes. That is one of the few Cole Porter shows I absolutely HATE!!!! I can't imagine Sutton Foster and Joel Grey performing anything but fabulous. Those 2 are amazing! :cool1:

I thought Sutton Foster did an awesome job, but Joel Grey must have been having an off-night when I saw the show. He was just so-so. The dancing in the first act finale was spectacular.

I also liked that the remodeled theatre was in the "basement" of the building.

That was so confusing! We had seats in the mezzanine, when we left we were at street level. I had forgotten that when we went downstairs to the restrooms before the show we were on the orchestra level. :upsidedow

I also thought the costumes were wonderful, my friend and I wanted every dress we saw, so retro and beautiful :cloud9: (JLo could take a lesson, LOL!)

MissDisney121, are you going to see Idina Menzel?

She is coming to Des Moines for a one-night concert on June 22.

I'd love to see her, but we are heading off to Seattle that day for our Disney Alaska cruise!

Girls night out!! We're going to see Priscilla, Queen of the Desert! Anyone seen it? It sounds like a hoot! :woohoo:

I bought my tickets this afternoon. I pretty much bought them as soon as I heard about it. I am beyond excited. Seeing her is on my bucket list. I'm sure the cruise will be fun too though. lol

We are going to see Idina in Mpls in July. We are lucky enough to have seen her a few years ago in a very intimate venue with box seats pretty much right on the corner of the stage. She was amazing!!!!

So tonight I went to the theater to see "Love Never Dies" the sequel to Phantom. It was filmed in Australia and it really was beautiful. The music was simply amazing and the sets and costumes were lush and gorgeous. The casting was perfect and I really did enjoy the story although I had some trouble wrapping my head around it. Phantom has been around so long and I have seen and heard it so many times that I guess I kind of made my own conclusions about what happened after so to see what Andrew Lloyd Webber says happened and have it be so different takes some getting used to. I don't know if it will ever end up coming to America (I don't think it did to well in London) but I would definitely see it again and it really was a beautiful overall production.

they are showing this in movie theatres here - I was thinking of going with DD14 next Tuesday. Your review helped me to decide to definitely do it!:)

I saw The Addams Family in Boston two weeks ago and I really enjoyed it! I have to say I saw it on Broadway back in March 2010 and it didn't really do much for me, but it was still in previews - I had trouble following the extra storylines and such. It's a much different show now - all the extra subplot was removed and the book was reworked and a few songs changed and it's very clean and tight with an excellent cast!

Looking forward to seeing Evita and hopefully Newsies and Ghost this spring - I'm hoping to get back to NYC in early May for a few days.

I have to say that Les Miserables is absolutely my favourite musical. I'm literally obsessed with musicals, so I have a feeling that I'll be posting in here/lurking a lot, haha.

Interesting! I didn't even realize there was a sequel to Phantom in the works! Do you remember who played the Pantom, Christine, Raul? Is it still playing in London? DD#2 is going to London 22-27 March - she may be interested to see it.

So excited! Just saw that national tour of The Book of Mormon is hitting Portland in early 2013! Nothing announced for Seattle yet but typically Broadway across America shows that hit Portland also do Seattle. We are musical theatre starved Canadians that rely on Seattle for our "fixes!" Fingers are crossed! I am currently listening to the cast recording of TBOM. Okay... I laughed till I cried but it is certainly not for the faint of heart! Any other fans out there? :rotfl2:

WHAT PART OF "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND??

Just attended our son's high school performances of The Music Man this weekend.

Wonderful show, the kids worked so hard, it was fantastic.

We rented a brand new local auditorium for the show, since our small school doesn't have one and we had to use a stage in the gymnasium in the past. The theater was great - professional grade lighting, backdrops, scenery panels that we could drop down from the cables above, a real orchestra pit. All the things that we didn't have in the gym!

Each performance was preceded by the obligtory - "Please silence all pagers and cell phones, and please, no flash photography."

Well, some woman with those HUGE paparazzi-type lenses, sitting 2 rows behind us, starts flashing away, almost from the very first scene. Not just a quick little flash, mind you. No, this was rapid fire "flash-flash-flash-flash", and she kept on, despite me giving her my best stink-eye staredown!!

I was really worried for the kids. The orchestra "pit" was basically a square hole in the floor in the front part of the stage. I was certain the flash would blind someone and they would end up falling into the pit, a la "Spiderman"! I mean, that flashing is distracting enough for the professionals, I can't imagine how hard it was for these high school kids! And this performance was being professionally video taped - now, thanks to her, we have all those flashes on our video!

Luckily, an usher came and told the woman to cut it out. And she FINALLY quit using the flash, although we could still hear her shutter clacking away.

At intermission, the house announcer AGAIN pointed stated, "For the SAFETY of the performers, PLEASE NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!!"

One of the mom's of another cast member is a professional photographer, and she took HUNDREDS of pictures of every scene during dress rehearsal, without flash. She posts these on smugmug for purchase, so that people can get pictures of their kids, so that everyone can get pictures if they want.

You can check out the pictures here:

People like that just kill me. I really wanted to ask her why the rules did not apply to her.

Actually, it made me feel a bit like I was at Disney World!

It didn't do too well in London so it is not open there anymore. I believe it is only playing in Australia now and in theater this Wednesday at 7:30p (which was filmed in Australia). In the original London cast Ramin Karmiloo was the phantom, Sierra Boggess was Christine, and Joseph Milson as Raoul. In the Austrailian Cast Anne O'Byrne is Christine, Ben Lewis is the Phantom and Simon Gleeson is Raoul.

I saw it on Broadway last summer, I loved it! It's so hilarious...and surpisingly, kinda sweet. We saw Josh Gad's understudy (Elder Cunningham), but he was awesome.

And no matter how many times you hear "Joseph Smith, American Moses," nothing will prepare you for the visuals that go along with it, not to mention the aftermath of "I Believe". By the end, I was laughing so much it was actually starting to hurt. :lmao:

I just saw that Christian Borle from "Smash" plays Black Stash in "Peter and the Starcatcher" - and realized he was the sweet guy, Emmett, in the televised by MTV "Legally Blonde: The Musical"! I loved him in that!:)
