The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I just found this thread and read the first and last pages so forgive me for any repeat info.

I just saw The Addams Family with Brooke Shields as Morticia...she was pretty bad but the rest of the cast was fantastic. Overall, I'm glad I went but it was my least favorite show yet. We did see David Gregory in the audience, our only celeb spotting in NYC, aside from Brooke Shields.

Does every show have their own souvenir drink cups? I saw a ton of people with the Addams Family cups and just had to have one. From the number of people I saw carrying them, I assumed they came with Orchestra seats, LOL...wrong, they were $16 each!

I am putting together a bus trip to see Wicked in NYC. I bought 55 tickets that are mid-mezzanine level. The group sales agent told me they do not sell groups any obstructed view seats.

Can anyone who has seen Wicked at the Gershwin Theater and sat mid-level mezz tell me about the seats? Or even the theater. Is it small? Are all seats good seats???

I saw Young Frankenstein (off Broadway--still do not know whether that counts, lol) but I LOVED it. I've never even seen the movie so I wasn't sure what to expect. It was so funny!!

I have the chance to see Les Mis in January. Debating whether I should go. Same thing, Off Broadway, in Knoxville at the TN Theatre. My sister is dying to go and I know nothing about it...

here's a link... http://www.tennesseetheatre.com/event/569661/les-miserables/ maybe someone can give me their opinion? TIA

Brenda, Les Mis is my ALL-TIME favorite musical - and I've seen a ton of musicals!!

I think you would love it.

I'm not going to spoil the plot for you, but I will tell you that it is not a laugh-out-loud musical, but it is very emotional.

Seconded! It's my favorite musical too, so it's definitely recommended.

You'll need to bring the tissues, but it's a beautiful musical. Definitely go see it!

You mean the Broadway sippy cups, as they're being called?

I have no idea when that phenomenon started, but I'm thinking they created those cups so people could bring them back to their seats and there was less of a chance of spilling them.

I know they were about $10 at Memphis, but I'm not sure what the other shows charge for them. I never get those at shows anyway, they're too expensive and people can get so obnoxious when they eat/drink during live theater. It's never fun watching a dramatic scene during a live performance and having to listen to some twit in the row in front sloshing the ice cubes in his cup around because he finished the drink (yes, that happened once). It's theater, it's not the movies.

Hahahahahaha I brought my Sister Act sippy cup to work yesterday! I actually have two of them lol - the last time I went to the show my parents both got drinks. I know for the two drinks (a wine and the show's signature drink - a Sister Mary Margarita :lmao:) and gummy bears they paid $32 :scared1:
I use mine to bring water with me to work - although yesterday I was joking that I could have used a Sister Mary Margarita instead!

I also have a Hairspray cup somewhere that in college was my go-to cup for cocktails LOL (I didn't want to risk having my nice wine glasses at school - plastic cups did the trick!)

How much do I love that the signature drink at Sister Act is is called a "Sister Mary Margarita"? :lmao:

When I was in London, they had vendors selling stuff in the aisles during the intermission (or interval, as they call it in London). Do you know how weird it was to see someone selling ice cream during the intermission at Les Mis?

And it's REALLY good! I may go see the show Saturday (one of the girls I know in the show has her last performance Sunday because she's moving onto Evita in the spring) and if I do I just may get one LOL

Poor DH, I know what he bought today! :lmao: (I don't think he realizes that the charges appear immediately as pending - now I
have to keep a lookout for the Apple store, he's getting me a Mac for Christmas)

There is a charge on the credit card for New Amsterdam Theater = guess we are going to see Mary Poppins in the near future!! ;)

Have you seen it yet?

I LOVED Mary Poppins!! Step In Time is amazing!

I am going to see Les Mis tonight! We have to stand on the sidewalk to wait to buy tickets, and of course it's been 40 all week, but today it's in the 20s and windy.

I think we sat mid level when we went in JUly. This theater is the most comfortable theater I have ever been in. The seats are wide and the amount of foot room in front of you was amazing. we had no problem seeing anything. I do wish I had brought some opera glasses but only because I really love to see all the details on the costumes but that is just me. I have helped costume a number of shows in the last 10 years.

The Gershwin Theatre is the second largest on Broadway. (Foxwoods Theatre "Spiderman" is the largest). All the seats should be good. We saw Wicked in 2004 in the second row of the mezzanine. The mezz is pushed back further in this theatre than in others. Most theatre mezz's overhang like Row K or L of the orchestra. The Gershwin mezz begins over perhaps Row R or S of the orchestra.

Enjoy the show. It's well worth seeing.

That's so funny! My mom got my dad tickets to War Horse, and my dad got my mom tickets to Seminar for Christmas, so we've had to run around telling them not to make plans for certain dates without telling them why. Like they can't guess at this point.

Just got back from seeing Hugh Jackman again. I had standing room this time and the wall was so high I practically had to stand on my toes for the whole show, but it was worth it! He was amazing.

And Nicole Kidman was in the audience tonight, which was pretty funny when Hugh pointed her out to everyone and then told everyone to stop clapping because she was going to kill him for pointing her out.

He pulled a guy onstage when he sang "Fever", and when he found out the woman he was with wasn't the guy's wife (they were on a date), Hugh made a whole production of it that was hysterical. The two of them ended up doing the Twist on stage together while the band played "Rock & Roll Music". And the guy was really sweaty so Hugh kept sponging him off with a towel. :rotfl:

He doesn't sing anything from Les Mis in the show, but he mentions that he's doing the movie...and even the way he says "Jean Valjean" is hot so I really can't wait for this movie. :woohoo:

He's also still auctioning off his undershirts for BC/EFA, and after the show tonight he sold one for $7000 and another for $6500. Amazing!

Such a great show, so glad I got to see it again. :thumbsup2

I remember some thing from back when he hosted the Tony's, like the next day or whatever, asking about when he went out toward the audience as Peter Allen. The interviewer asked if the thing with him and Sarah Jessica Parker was a setup and he said no, he hadn't known what he was going to do, but he walked over and looked down and Kidman was sitting there; he looked at her, she glared back and mouthed 'don't you DARE' so he turned the other way and there was SJP.

Yeah, I read that one too. Nicole actually presented when he won his Tony for Boy From Oz that night. Hugh also sang at her wedding when she married Keith Urban.

Tonight he was about to sing "Over the Rainbow" with these aboriginal performers (one of my favorite parts of the show), and he was talking about filming the movie "Australia", and that's when he mentioned that Nicole was in the audience.

That was pretty cool, I loved that movie.

War Horse and Seminar - both really good shows-they'll both enjoy!

DH and I have taken DS8 and DS10 to see Mary Poppins and Lion King. They loved both! We're talking about Newsies this spring too. What other kid-friendly shows would y'all recommend? (I really don't have any interest in seeing Spiderman.) Thanks in advance!:thumbsup2
