The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Has anyone seen that The Little Mermaid's closing in August? I'm not surprised. I've loved The Little Mermaid since I was little, but the Broadway show just wasn't good, at least compared to the other shows out there. It's still going on tour though!

Is this true? I just saw it earlier this month and thought it was great. It was better than Lion King, imo, which we saw in December (it was way better when it first came out). I thought Little Mermaid was better than Mary Poppins also. Grr

I am sad to hear about Little Mermaid closing. I did enjoy it but do agree it could have been so much better. I do plan on seeing it again before it closes. I heard rumors it was closing. I think it's all politics. The people who own the theater have plans for a bigger show to come in and they are looking for the dollar signs. Too bad they can't transfer LM to another theater.
Rumor is that Addams Family is eyeing that theater.

I saw Next to Normal last night and loved it. Great score and Alice Ripley was amazing!

Hoping to get Next to Normal tickets in August at TKTS. I already paid a premium for our Hair tickets, do not want to pay full price for a second show.

I picked up Next to Normal tix for $85 per a couple of weeks ago. If you'd like, I can check around and see if I can find the code.....

Actually Avenue Q is closing on September 13. So glad I am going to see it on Sunday ( my birthday present from my DH) :thumbsup2

:sad2::sad1:I heard on fox 5 that avenue Q
was closing but knew nothing about the Little
Mermaid closing! I love it! Its so disappointing
when good shows end:sad2::sad1:

I wasn't surprised about Ave Q either. It's such a fun show, but the sales were WAY down. It's one of the shows always up on TDF for discounted tickets, and it's been hovering around 60% for attendance. I guess it's just run it's course.

There are lots of fun new shows to look forward to though! Bye Bye Birdie comes in Sept, Mempis opens in October (and looks awesome!) and Fela is supposed to open to BWay sometime this Fall and I heard nothing but good reviews about it's off-Broadway run.

My friend and I saw Billy Elliot this past Thursday and it was cute! We saw Kiril Kulish and he was amazing... that boy can DANCE! His accent alone was impressive. He was too cute! The show was great and I liked the music a lot more than I thought I would, but I have to admit I got bored with the parts about the miner's strike after a while and the show seemed a little long towards the end. I liked it a lot though, although I liked Rock of Ages, In the Heights and Hair better.

I just saw Billy Elliot also. I enjoyed it, but its
definitely not on my list of "must see" shows.
It may be a bit overated. Bye Bye Birdie should
be great. What's the word on Dirty Dancing....
anyone??

Aww, this is sad :(

So the longest-running show (consecutive performances) is still Phantom, then.

Anyone see South Pacific Live from the Licoln Center on PBS Thursday night?

I was lucky enough to get two tickets for my mom & I to be at the live taping! It's seriously my FAVORITE show on the planet & I was so happy to see it one last time before it closes AND to be a part of the live taping. I love Paulo Szot! :lovestruc I could listen to him (watch him!) forever. :cloud9: And Kelli O'Hara is amazing. I DVRed it on my tivo & I am now burning it onto a dvd. :woohoo:

If you missed it, they're airing it again on Sunday, but it may be different depending on your area.

OT- Camp Rock's (?) premiere was also going on at Juilliard so before going into the taping my mom & I got to see the Jonas brothers & the rest of the cast. We were about 30 feet from them with a perfect view. Not a fan, but still thought it was pretty cool. Talk about luck! I should have went & played the lotto or something.

oh no...when is it ending in nyc??? I've been wanting to see it
for so long. I will have to look at sundays listings and try and
catch it!

Sunday's the last show. (aug 22) :sad2: It is going on tour, though, but that's never the same.

Guess I blew that one!!! I hadn't heard a thing about it closing!
I do like the touring shows. With any luck it will come to our
local theater.

You know, I enjoyed the production but I have to say Paulo Szot's accent drove me crazy. If that was a french accent then I'm a body double for Angelina Jolie. However, his singing voice was just lovely.
