The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

loved the Tony's tonight!! i loved seeing all of the performances.

Except the Billy Elliot performance...i mean, really? They couldn't have chose, i dunno, ANY OTHER SCENE over the spastic tap dancing?? i've never seen the show, but there had to have been something better!!

and oh how i love Neil Patrick Harris. :lovestruc

I actually worked the Tony awards and most of the technical problems didn't happen at the rehearsal and I think some things worked better live than on TV.
I hadn't seen Billy Elliot before the Tonys but went last night to see it. I agree the song works much better in the show than it did at the Tonys. I feel that happens with many performances on the Tonys. They don't always work as well out of context. Plus they don't have the exact same set ups either.
I enjoyed Billy Elliot the musical, the dancing was incredible, but wasn't as thrilled with the music.

As far as Bret Michaels hurting himself, I did see him shortly after it happened carrying a towel near his face, but he looked to be ok.

I'm taking my mother to see Jersey Boys this Sunday. It would've been my parents 50th anniversary that day so I wanted to do something special.

I can't wait...thoughts for those of you who have seen it? We are in the Orchestra section about 8 rows back on the right.

TIA :goodvibes

Jersey Boys is fabulous!!! You will have a fantastic time. :thumbsup2

Did anyone else hear Guys and Dolls is already closing this Sunday? The summer season always hits shows the hardest.

We just got tickets for Spiderman! Opening night! January 16th. I am so excited. Funny and sad thing is it's in the last theater we went to- (for Young Frankenstein which we LOVED I can't believe that closed so quickly it was really good)

Actually, it's usually the winter season that hits Broadway the hardest - the weather is bad, there's fewer tourists, etc. That's when a lot of shows close.

And yes, Guys & Dolls is closing on Sunday, per Playbill:

I haven't heard of many shows closing in the winter. I'm just going by last year when half of Broadway closed by September  The theater clubs usually offer the best discounts in the summer too, that's when Theatermania put up a bunch of Broadway shows for $4.50 a ticket last summer, and they've already offered a few for this summer. It could just be the economy though!

January/February are when Broadway usually gets hit hard - not as many tourists due to the weather and the kids are in school. It's busy during vacation weeks in February and spring break time, but once Christmas week is over it gets pretty slow on Broadway for awhile. A lot of shows that are struggling close during that time, and a lot of the big shows like Wicked and Lion King are actually easier to get tickets to because business is somewhat slower.

The Guys & Dolls closing was surprising - the reviews were awful and it got off to a slow start, but it seemed to be popular enough that many thought it would last through the summer at least.

Maybe the economy is changing the patterns too. We were just able to get Wicked tickets for August without a problem, and we walked right into the box office to get tickets to In the Heights, Billy Elliott and Next To Normal for this summer. The theater clubs are also offering amazing discounts. I don't think this summer will be as bad as last, attendance is definitely up, but every summer we find great deals and low crowds!

That's not really different from any other summer. Wicked's been there for more than 5 years now, so getting advance tickets to that should be pretty easy. Billy Elliot's website says there are tickets available for performances this week, and In The Heights and Next to Normal are both discounted or at TKTS on a regular basis, so those are fairly easy tickets to get too.

Broadway's actually having a great year, which is surprising since so many shows closed in the early part of the year and many were predicting the worst. Glad it didn't happen!

I don't know - I saw Guys and Dolls in March and it was TERRIBLE. I'm not really surprised it's closing...it had really bad word of mouth in addition to poor reviews.

Whoever the sound guy was for the Tony's should be shot. SO many sound errors/problems.

Anywho, I don't get all the hype for Billy Elliot. Everything I've seen/heard of it, I haven't been thrilled. Like the Tony performance... I bet it is amazing live, but out of context like that, it did nothing to intrigue me to see the show.

SO thrilled for Hair though. I'm living in NYC for the summer, and you can bet I will be trying to win the lotto tix as many times as I can XD
You know it's funny but I said to my dd when the sound was so messed up...'Good to see that this happens on Broadway too!!!' We are always having sound issues in community theater!!! I felt so badly when they handed Nicely Nicely a mike!!!

Yikes, did everyone hear that Brett Michaels broke his nose during that opening number scenery mishap last night?
Hi Jen!!! You know...my stomach just dropped when that happened. And it looked like he just walked into that dropping set. He did say that he had 'missed his mark'...no kidding!!! Just needed to be off by about 2 seconds and plop..you walk into a dropping set!!! Ouch!

Exactly, the summer's usually pretty slow. We tried to get Wicked tickets this past Spring and couldn't, now we had no problem! I'd love to see the other hit shows - Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys and Lion King, but ticket prices are outrageous without the discounts :scared1:

Hairspray, Spamalot, and Spring Awakening were three that closed this past winter (the latter two on the same day!) Rent closed in September (wahhhh). I believe Xanadu also recently closed, as did Legally Blonde: The Musical (which was surprisingly GOOD).

I had tickets for Guys and Dolls on the 28th (my sister had given them to me for my birthday), but now it's closing this weekend. I'm actually ok with the closing... I haven't heard many good things about it. and now I got to pick another show to go see on the 28th.

And I chose Hair. :) I can not wait! And I got aisle seats so we can get cast interaction too.

Oh, I saw August: Osage County last weekend. It was FANTASTIC. So intense, but so good. I got $39 tix by getting a flyer off a promoter on the street. Go see it if you haven't yet, Phylicia Rashad is in it for the summer. She's great in it!

My friend and I just got back from In the Heights and LOVED it! I really, really loved it. All of the original cast except for two of the leads (Lin-Manual Miranda and Karen Olivio) were in it and they're all so talented! The music was even better than I'd expected, and the dancing was awesome! Growing up in NYC I loved seeing a show about hanging out on the stoop and knowing all the neighbors, which I'm sure a lot of people can relate to. It was a great, upbeat, fun show!

Plus we had great seats! We were in the mezzanine for the first half of the show and had a great view of the whole stage. Then during intermission my friend asked the manager if they had any cancellations, and they moved us up to the 7th row, center. Can't beat that for $40! I highly reccomend it!

I'm just glad Elton John didn't realize he was having mike problems - you know he's always so calm and rational when things go wrong. :rolleyes1

Hi Diane! I guess that's what happens when you don't come to rehearsal, which I hear Brett didn't....

I was there. He missed the first rehearsal because his flight got in late but he did make it the second time they ran through it. I think both sides are partly to blame. But in Bret's latest statement he seems to be ok with the whole thing. He even apologized to the other Broadway performers. Hopefully there isn't a lawsuit.
