The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

Lucky!

I'm seeing the tour cast soon. Kyle may or may not be in it (he left at the end of Cleaveland to film a new TV pilot). Matt Doyle is taking over for him til he gets back.

But, I am seeing Blake Bashoff!

You should seriously edit that to Cleveland. Every time I see Cleaveland, I think Cleavageland. Not that it's a bad though ;)

It's good that at least one of them will be there!

You can't go wrong with Matt Doyle, I love him! I met him a few times and he's the nicest guy with the greatest voice. The first time I saw the show was with all the original cast except for Johnny, Groff, Lea and John B. Wright. They were incredible. Kyle Riabko and Blake Bashoff were perfect for the roles. I couldn't stand Alexandra Socha though. She had a weak voice and was a horrible actress. The second time was with Hunter Parrish and Gerard Canonico. I loved Hunter Parish! He had a really nice voice but it was his acting that stood out. He was the only one who made the graveyard scene believable. Everyone else just screamed like a banshee and went over-the-top. His reaction was so subtle and gorgeous. Gerard was the best Moritz!!! Moritz is my favorite character and I thought it would be hard to beat Blake - he's amazing. But Gerard didn't act like Moritz... he WAS Moritz. Unbelievable.

I hated the rest of the new cast though! All the new kids were horrible... those gorgeous riffs of Skyler Astin's in Touch Me? Gone. None of the new kids had a voice that was anything special and it ruined it. The best one, besides Gerard and Hunter, was without-a-doubt Matt! I saw him twice as Hanschen and he was AWESOME! When it was still on Broadway so many people would line up for last-minute tickets on the days he understudied as Melchior. You'll love him!

Ahhh all this talk makes me REALLY miss the show :sad1: I found a bootleg of the off-Broadway version with the original cast to download online and burned it onto a DVD to watch every once in a while

ETA: I was just thinking about the show for a first time in a while, thanks to this thread :goodvibes: And you know what I miss the most? The part in "Those You've Known" where all music stops except for Melchior singing along to the single beating of the drums. When you see it live, the beat just moves right through you and you're completely enveloped in it. It's MAGIC. You're gonna love it!

I was thrilled to read in today's paper that In The Heights is going out on tour!!! Coming to Pittsburgh in early Feb '10! :cool1:

Oh, that's good to know!

I agree, not much can replace the original "fab 4" (Groff, Michele, Gallagher, Pritchard). Lauren just IS Ilse to me. Her voice and acting suits the character like no other (though, watching the final show on YouTube, Emma Hunton's acting was great as well). I did see a great Song of Purple summer done by Phoebe Strole, the original Anna, when she subbed for Lauren one show (possibly a few). Of course, that was again, YouTube

I've heard positive feedback about the touring cast, though! Steffi D. seems like a decent Ilse, and Christy Altomare (Gerard's girlfriend!) a decent Wendla.

Matt or Kyle, Melchior (or Mattchior as they call him) will be great! And of course, Blake Bashoff.

Oh, and Ben Moss (Ernst). He is the cutest little thing ever :cutie:

(Funny, as soon as I finish typing that, Totally ****** WOULD come on my iPod! :rotfl:)

Too funny, I love that song! :lovestruc:lovestruc

I've heard really good reviews of the touring cast. You really can't go wrong with Kyle/Matt and Blake - they're all amazing. And really cute ;) I saw some Christy as Wendla videos on Youtube and just from what I've seen, she's a billion times better than Alexandra. I really couldn't stand her voice... she hardly had one. Christy has a really cool, smoky voice though. Her voice fits with the music really well. I would have rather seen her!

I liked Lauren as Ilse in the beginning. Her voice in incredible! But she played it so differently than how I pictured the character. Lauren made Ilse very confident and sure of herself. She was a bohemian amongst bohemians, and was the wild-child Moritz thought she was. Emma played Ilse completely differently, and I thought it was so much better. Emma made Ilse seem like an insecure child lost in a very adult world, who was trying to seem more mature than she was in order to make herself feel better. She added a whole new depth to the character and it really went along with the theme of the show, with young kids getting stuck in very adult situations, and just trying to pull through. Loved it! She was one of the only new cast members I really liked.

Wow! I disappear from the Dis for a while and look what happens, a thread I started makes it to 26 pages. I'm glad people are finding this thread interesting enough to keep it going.

Emma's last day performances (both matinee and night) were amazing! She was truly sobbing when she said "by the time you finally wake up, I'll be lying on some trash heap".
Gerard was also crying during his "so dark" monologue.

I agree, Christy does have a totally different voice. I think Lea did her Wendla as more of a scared child, and Christy does hers as more out there and like the Wendla from the original play.

From your previous post, Those You've Known is gorgeous. I'm interested to see how Kyle does this scene (if I see him). He does have a good voice, he and Christy are a good match!

Have you checked out the blog for the tour cast? Tons of good videos and things. (search "Totally Trucked" on Google. It'll be their blogspot link. Links on their blog to their YouTube, Steffi D's YouTube, the official SA website, etc.)

There's one video I LOVE on their YouTube. It's the girls in their dressing room doing one of their pre-show rituals, which is a Mama Who Bore Me (reprise) rehersal. Just in their dressing room ALONE, they blow the OBC away by miles. So gorgeous; love that song.

The acappella (sp?) part in Purple Summer never fails to move me, as well. Such harmonies!

(Long post, sorry. 19 days!)

:woohoo:

Bump!

I checked the TotallyTrucked blog today, and am SO excited; Kyle Riabko is re-joining the tour on April 10 to finish the Toronto run! I am sad for Matt, as he only stayed for a few weeks, but I'm glad to have Kyle back (he had the best sense of humor in the entire cast, IMO). I hope he does a good Melchior!

Amazing news! One of my DDs good friends just booked the national tour of SA !!! Yes! :thumbsup2 Her name is Krista Pioppi. She is remarkably talented. We first saw her perform when she was only 8 years old. She and my DD were both at an audition for Annie. I was absolutely blown away by her voice and charisma and she was only 8! (Of course, she was cast as Annie :rolleyes1 much to DDs disappointment. ) But they have remained friends as they have been in shows together over the last nine years and have attended Musical Theater Conservatory together. We are so, so excited for her. It couldn't have happened to a nicer and harder-working girl. Those of you who are SA fans, I'm sure you are going to love her!

Congrats to your DD's friend! Do you know what part she's going in for? Swing/Ensemble or Anna/Thea/Martha? (Doubt Christy or Steffi are leaving for Wendla and Ilse)

Single digit dance!

9 days til Spring Awakening! Hooray!

Kyle Riabko. Blake Bashoff. Christy Altomare. Could I ask for more?

(Well...in terms of OBC...Gideon Glick, Ernst, was reallllly cute)

One of my best friends is going the same day (same show, too!) as I am, so that'll be fun.

Sunday, April 26, the 1:00 matinee!

I'm surprised CapeCodTenor hasn't already posted this here. This YouTube clip has been posted to a couple other threads already, but if you missed it, like I had because the thread titles didn't interest me, take a look at it now. (Or again. :teeth:)

This song is from Les Miserable.

If you've ever dreamed of being on Broadway or stood up and cheered for someone's dream of being on Broadway, you'll know why this YouTube clip belongs here. :mic: :woohoo:

ETA: She actually is the wrong casting for Fantine. But she'd be a dead ringer to play Madame Thénardier, (the wife as the thieving couple who take in Cosette and sing "Master of the House.")

Les Miz is one I've yet to see :headache:

Soon, they'll be announcing the '09-'10 season at PPAC. Can't wait to see what's coming!

I've seen Les Mis on Broadway 3 times. (Those were the days when tickets were affordable.) One of my favorite musicals. It needs to have about 4 songs cut from it because it is way too long, :faint: but once you weed past them, it is so worth it. One of the most uplifting musicals I've seen, in spite of all the crying. Bring LOTS of tissues.:sad::sad:

I have heard it's long, yes. But I'm willing to see it; it's a classic!

The last thing I saw was Mamma Mia!, in January. Broadway withdrawl!

Still, nothing can beat the time I saw Chicago in NYC, front row.

You're gonna love it! I went to the MET this afternoon and there was an old poster for the show on the train. It made me miss it sooooo much! You have to post a review when you get back!

Thanks! I've been counting down since TRIPLE digits and now it's finally single digit time!

I'll post a detailed review for sure :)

I think I just fainted.

Avenue Q AND Wicked?!

:faint:

I've been dying to see Avenue Q! And Wicked I love, love, love (hence my tag).

Young Frankenstein is starting its National Tour here! :woohoo:

And, to promote it and set up, MEL BROOKS himself is going to be here for a month!

Wicked and Jersey Boys are doing month-long runs here as well.
