The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I saw Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo this past Sunday. It was an interesting play, very dark and violent. I'm seeing Driving Miss Daisy this Thursday and I can't wait.

OT: I love your tag, it's so NY! :thumbsup2

Oh I would love to see Les miz live. The only productions I have seen are the two concert versions that are on DVD. I especially love the newest one though Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean is amazing and you can never go wrong with Lea Salonga.
I was glad it was broadway cares week too because I got a signed playbill from next to normal for only $20. Alice Ripley has a very interesting signature.
I can't wait till the civic center announces next seasons line up. I hope there are more amazing shows.

Les Miz is my favorite musical! I've seen it 9 times: 8 on Broadway, and once in London. I'm watching the 25th Anniversary Concert right now, it's really good, although Nick Jonas' robotic arms are weirding me out a little. Seriously. He looks like he has the arms of a Ken doll.

I have a Broadway Cares poster from Les Miz signed by the whole cast (including Craig Schulman, who was my favorite Valjean). We bought our posters in the lobby from Stephen Bruntrock, who was playing Enjolras at the time (my favorite character). He asked my sister if she liked the show, and she said she loved it - and that it was the first time she'd seen the show in 6 years, which he seemed really surprised by. So after she got her poster he said "Thanks - see you in 6 years! If I'm still here then, shoot me!" It was so funny! :rotfl:

When I saw Hairspray they were collecting for Broadway Cares, and my friend and I met a pre-Glee Matthew Morrison collecting in the lobby. He was so cute!

I loved Jersey Boys! Saw it 3X. We are older than you, but I don't think age really matters, it's just a good show! If you like musicals I think you will enjoy it.

Agreed! I'm in my 30s, and I saw Jersey Boys (for free!) about two years ago. I loved it! The play itself is very jukebox-musical, but the the music is amazing! I couldn't stop listening to it afterwards. :thumbsup2

For all the theater-loving Dis’ers in the New York area:

Long story short – I was sending my wife to New York this weekend for her birthday, and she was taking her best friend along for her birthday (we live in Toronto, Canada). I bought tickets to the Friday March 25th preview showing of "Mother****** With The Hat" for the two of them. Best laid plans and all – her friend broke her ankle yesterday and can’t travel for weeks. They’ll go later in the summer.

So. We can cancel the plane tickets, hotel reservations, etc., but these tix are bought and paid for – and no refunds. I’d hate to see them go to waste. I have no interest in Craigslist or trying to sell them – not worth the hassle. I’d rather just give them to someone who’ll use and enjoy them. I (unfortunately) had to do this years ago here with opera tickets we couldn’t use, and that worked out.

The play is a world-premiere by Stephen Adly Guirgis, known for his gritty, comic dramas. This one (very obviously not for kids) features a great cast, including the Broadway debut of Chris Rock. It’s at 8PM at the Schoenfeld Theater on 45th. They’re e-tickets so I can just forward them – if you’re interested, PM me.

- Michael

Not me - but that is SO nice of you!!! :)

So lucky you got to meet Matthew Morrison, I love him! His new single is great. I have the broadway cares signed poster from the last tour of Rent so it has Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp's signatures which I was so excited about. and I got to meet Anthony Rapp outside of the theater.
I am actually planning to go see Les Miz in Omaha on May 1st since Deb in IA told me about it and I am so excited.
I agree about Nick Jonas, but I think his voice is actually pretty good especially on "Empty chairs at empty tables". The whole cast of the 25th concert is great I especially love Ramin Karmiloo (sp?).

I wanted to ask on here if anyone is a fan of the musical "The Last Five Years". It stars Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott. It is one of my favs but it didn't last very long on off-broadway. Just wanted to see if there were any other fans out there.

LOVE Last Five Years! Shiksa Goddess and I Can Do Better Than That are two of my favorite songs ever. I wish I could have seen it on stage, but I have gotten to see Butz and Scott live in other shows. They are both wonderful performers.

Now I need to listen to the cast recording again! Thanks for bringing it back to mind. :thumbsup2

Omg you are so lucky that you have gotten to see them both. My bucket list includes seeing both of them, Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth and Aaron Tveit at some point in time.

Nick Jonas was OK, but I just don't think he looks mature enough to play the part of Marius. Isn't he like 18, and Marius is supposed to be a university student? His voice is also a bit weak - OK for pop music, but doesn't have the power and depth for musical theater. Just my opinion.

Matthew Morrison . . .. What did you see him in?

I'm so glad you got tickets to Omaha!!!

If you like the concert versions, I think you will LOVE seeing the entire show with the scenery, props, visuals, and with the acting. It is incredible!!

Let us know what you think after you've seen the show!

My guess would be she saw him playing Linc Larkin in Hairspray?? Soooo lucky!!!

I don't have a Broadway Cares poster, but I did buy a Playbill in the lobby for Broadway Cares, signed by the final touring cast of Rent, including Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc.

That was my problem with him too...he's got a nice enough voice, but not nearly powerful enough for the material, and he seemed a little too young. It seemed like the show was about to eat him alive.

He played Gavroche in the Broadway production a few years back. He's in one of my Playbills (as "Nicholas Jonas"), although he wasn't on the night I saw the the show, according to my ticket stub and the schedules in the Playbill. He also played Chip in Beauty and the Beast.

Hairspray! He was the original Link. The Broadway Cares thing took awhile, because they auctioned off a hairspray can signed by the whole cast (Harvey Firestein was hilarious doing the auction), so by the time we were out in the lobby he'd already changed back into his jeans and t-shirt. Totally cute. :thumbsup2

We saw Spring Awakening last Saturday and WOW was it different than what we usually see. I would like to ask some stuff about it, but don't want to spoil it for anyone (is there anyone besides me who hadn't seen it?)... so I guess I won't.

Feel free to PM me with questions about Spring Awakening. I worked on it way back when, but it's the same show that's out on tour. :rotfl:

Oh, of course! Forgot he was in Hairspray! :headache:

I saw Hairspray when it opened on Broadway in 2002 and I had no idea it was the same Matthew from Glee until about a month ago! Totally a d'oh moment, lol. At least I still have the playbill. :wizard:

Thank you for the offer - MissDisney answered my questions - but how exciting that you got to work on the show!

I'm going to be seeing "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" with Daniel Radcliffe tonight! I'll come back & post a review sometime tomorrow.

Cool!

Hard to see him as anything but "Harry Potter", but I've heard he's gotten good previews. I hope he can pull it off!

We saw Jersey Boys last night and loved it! It even won over my husband, who wasn't thrilled about going. Of course, I had no idea what anyone was saying for the first 15 minutes... but eventually my ears adapted to whatever language they were speaking :rotfl2:

I had a good idea I would at least like it because I have a thing for biographical movies. But it was even better than I expected! I loved the parts where they showed real footage while the actors performed and mirrored the movements - COOL!
