~The BOT Battalion~ BOTS On The Run

I've watched Amazing Race a few times but haven't seen it in a while. Ever since I got an HDTV I find myself watching these Natl Geographic, Discovery and History channel programs at night because they look and sound so cool on HDTV. I am fascinated by this show where this guy gets dropped into these remote places and lives off the land for like a week. I think it's called Surviorman. He must be some former marine because he eats just about anything and can survive anywhere. He was in Alaska this weekend. I guess this show is like the real version of Amazing Race and Survivor because he has to hike or kayak out of these remote areas without any help.
I met Survivorman! His name is Les Stroud, and he was giving a presentation at our children's museum (the Strong National Museum of Play) last year. He's a great guy, gave a good talk, and answered a lot of questions. I was able to go up and ask him some questions one on one. He's definitely not military - more of a pacifist I think, and he's a musician. He wrote and performed all the music they use on the show. I definitely watch that show too.

Dave - That's pretty cool. I figured he was some former Navy Seal. It's one of those shows that I pass by when I am flicking around looking for something to watch and I can't turn it off. I think they had a marathon on this weekend and I watched about 3 episodes while I was working in my office.

There is another show on Discovery, Man vs. Wild, where the host/survivor is a former British military commander.

I'll have to check out Survivorman, sounds pretty cool.

I'm another of the Survivor and Amazing Race watchers. I was in hysterics over the cheese challenge on this week's Amazing Race-- I don't know why I found it so funny, but people swearing off ever eating cheese again as they chased it down the hill just struck me.

Lou: We think we are going to do Broad Street this year and likely the PDR again although plans are not firm. That's actually why I asked about he Penn Relay thing-- Butch went to grad school there so I thought he might like to run it.

As for me, I got in 10 miles last night in prep for the Princess 1/2. My motivation is just not there though, I'm having to force myself to get up and run at least 3-4 days a week. I plan on some cross training today-- we bought an ellipse to allow Butch's foot time to heal post marathon and I have yet to try the new toy (we just assembled it this weekend). We still have to make our reservations for Princess Weekend-- on site or off is our main question at the moment...

Matt's new Travel Channel favorite is Man vs. Food. It's pretty horrifying and gross in that "I can't stop watching" sort of way.

Finally.. a resolution to my situation.

I saw the podiatrist this morning and told him things felt pretty good. Not 100%, but that I felt a twinge every now and then. I told him I wanted off of the medicine that has kept me feeling queasy, eating too much to protect the stomach, and being drowsy. On top of that it was over $2.50 each when I got the script filled. I don't like paying to suffer.... (then why did I do the Goofy three years in a row? :confused3 ). He told me to go off the med immediately. :cheer2:

He poked around my heel with no pain what-so-ever. I told him my particular pain area is closer to the mid-foot area and he poked there and asked how mmuch it hurt on a scale of 1 to 10. I told him a 1, however in retrospect it was probably a 2. (I can actually still feel where he pressed his finger there this morning at 8:20 AM.)

Here is the plan:

1. Ease back into running (outside).
2. Stretch the plantar area before, during and after each run.
3. Ice the plantar after each run and at night if applicable.
4. Continue to go to the gym for XT (Biking, Elliptical and lifting weights).
5. Prepare for the Caesar Rodney Half on Sunday, March 15.
6. If all of this does not improve the foot overall, orthotics and/or other methods will need to be used in the future.

I am cautiously optimistic about a full recovery. I am not quite there yet, it is evident from how I feel while not being on the meds. I know that if I want to run (which I really, really want to do), I'll need to be diligent in the icing and stretching. I'll be icing it tonight and I haven't exercised a bit today. I have made it part of my routine and it will continue to be there until this thing is completely cured.

Cindy, Dana (my wife) and I like Man vs. Food too. That Adam guy has a lot of personality. I watch it while I'm folding laundry. It struck us the other day when he couldn't eat 2 more bites of the 12 egg omlet.

Howard- I'm glad you got some positive news, and here's to you being on the road to recovery.

Hey Guys,

I'm happy to say that I've really cut back on the TV watching this year. I use to watch a fair number of shows every week, including Survivor. I just didn't start watching anything when the new seasons started in the fall. Lost is the only weekly show on my "must see" list.

One would think that with all this free time I would be more productive; bring world peace, solve the economic crisis, that sort of thing. The only problem is that most of that TV time is now replaced with Mario Kart on the Wii.:confused3

Lou - My next race is some yet to be determined distance at the National Marathon on March 21. Most likely the full but to be honest, during my 16 miler over the weekend I couldn't possibly imagine running 10 additional miles. We'll see.

Howard - Sounds like a plan for the PF. Just ease back into it.

Jen - How did the elliptical training go? I've only tried one for about 2 minutes and if felt too funky for me.

Cindy - It won't take you too long to get back into the routine again. Just a couple of days in a row and some consistently warmer weather and you'll be all set.

Dave - You better start saving now for you Pittsburgh trip. Between car breakdowns and/or speeding tickets...

Colleen - You still funkin' over Jodi's trip?

:wave2: to everyone else.

I did my 7 miles tonight. I forgot my Garmin so I actually think I ran more than 7 but I'm not gonna map it out to see. I'll try for 7 more on today but the weather looks dicey.

See ya!

Howard – I’m glad to hear that you got the ok to run again. I think your positive attitude will really help you kick this thing.

Jen – 10 miles doesn’t sound like a lack of motivation to me, nice job!

Dave – did you see the 12 pound burger episode?

Mike – Glad to hear that you are in for the National! One word of caution – you should probably register soon. Last year they only had about 5000 people registered and this year there are already over 7000 (the cap is 8000). Confession – I also seem to have a bit of an addiction to Mario Kart (as does Matt). One of the reasons I didn’t run this weekend is because I spent half the day on Sunday trying to get a trophy in the 150cc Flower Cup (I keep screwing it up on the last course – the mine one).

ETA: No running for me this morning. I finally got a good night's sleep last night for the first time in a long time, so when the alarm went off at 5:30, I decided to stay in bed and let the sleep continue. (I realize that is somewhat twisted logic).

Cindy - Thanks for the tip on the National filling up.

Sleeping is definitely a bonus. I would never run if I had to get out of bed in the morning to do it.

It took me forever to get 1st place on Flower Cup. I've only got 1 more 1st to get in 150cc. I guess then I go back and try to improve my ratings in each.

And just as a word of caution, it's not a good idea to play that stupid game for an hour then get in a real car for a drive. I scared my poor DD12 to death swerving around parked cars and shouting "Oh Yeah!".

Howard - So glad you feel confident of a full recovery from the PF:cool1:

Cindy - Catching up on sleep is ALWAYS a good thing:thumbsup2

Mike - Congrats to DD on the Locks of Love donation:love:

Jen - It sounds like the Princess training is going splendidly:banana:

Dave & Lou - What happened to the spring weather:eek: ? We're shoveling out this morning and I assume you are as well:scared:

Colleen - How's the yoga going popcorn::

Jodi - Miss you:hug:

Well, I finally went to a new ortho and although I am most likely going to need additional surgery, I do think I am making progress with the true leg issue:hippie: . The pain's never been in the knee, more so down the outside of the leg and has always been in one spot for the past 1.5 years. The new doc believes it is a compression neuropathy. I'm going for NCV testing this afternoon so we'll see:rolleyes1 .

Dave & Lou - What happened to the spring weather:eek: ? We're shoveling out this morning and I assume you are as well:scared:

Sara - It's actually nice here today. I ran 6 miles this AM and it was about 38 degrees and sunny at 7AM. It's in the high 40's now. Sorry you are buried under but glad we avoided any bad weather. I cannot wait for Spring and really don't want any more snow.

Sorry about the leg problem. Hopefully the testing finds the problem and you can work on rehabbing. We need to get you back to running marathons.

The real "health hazard" for me appears to be the fact that I am staring at the screen so intently that I don't seem to blink when I am playing. After I play, my contacts are all stuck to my eyes in weird and painful ways. It's pretty ridiculous.

Sara - I'm sorry to hear that you are going to need additional surgery, but hopeful this new doc will be able to help you run pain free.

Lou - I also had a nice run with temps in the high 30s this morning (39).

So, I did run again today! Only 4 miles. Guess I'll need to try to run a bit longer over the weekend.

Sara: I hope they are able to find and fix the source of pain in your leg, good luck

Mike and Cindy: I love the Mario Kart stories. We are a bit addicted ourselves, although I'm definitely the weakest link when we play as a team. We have also gotten addicted to the Raving Rabbid games for wii-- they are too funny.

Howard: How is your foot doing after a few runs?

Not too much to report here. We are still trying to firm up plans for Princess weekend. Butch actually ran for the first time since the marathon without having his foot pain flare up. He is still planning to take it easy and use the ellipse for the next week or two but now thinks he will be able to run the race and not merely hobble quickly as he feared might be the case.

Hi Everyone: OK here's my update, I went to the Doctor's yesterday, and had a "procedure" done. No running for me for a week. Also, no, uuum, "treadmill moving" for at least a week too - if you know what I mean. ;)

I'm a little concerned about my training for Pittsburgh, but hey, it will get done. Maybe this will give me some time to come up with a training plan for Pittsburgh.

Here's my update.

My right ear has been bothering me for over a week. It started getting pretty painful on Wednesday, so I made an appointment with the doctor for this morning. Yesterday, my left ear also started to hurt. Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night in quite possibly the worst pain I have ever been in (not to be too over dramatic). Went to doctor. I have ear infections in both ears. The left one is "just" an inner ear infection, but in the right ear, the enitre ear canal is infected. Got some drugs. Hopefully I'll feel better soon because this is pretty crazy. I can't really hear very well either, so I'm kind of in a little fog. I think its really weird that I have ear infections. Kids are supposed to get those, not people in their 30s:confused3

Cindy, Oh, those are so painful. I suffered from ear infections all the time when I was a kid. In fact, I had to get tubes in my ears. Usually the antibiotics will kick the ear infections pretty quickly. Take care.

Dave - Um, I hope you recover quickly from the "procedure." Don't even laugh when I say I swear I really do need to move my treadmill since I've moved again and can't bring myself to even trade favors to get it from the basement at DH's to the second floor at my house:rolleyes: Luckily, dry roads are in the near future so I may be able to survive without it for a bit:laughing:

Cindy
- :wizard: I hope the drugs work quickly for you:hug: !! Ear infections are no fun:sad2:

Jen- Glad Butch had a pain-free run:yay:

I haven't run in WAY too long (see above) so I'm hoping once I hand the DD's off on Sunday I can get some respectable miles in. I had my NCV done yesterday and I'll get results next Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend:grouphug:

:stitch2: Monday Mixers w/ Team 'Ohana :stitch2:

I thought I'd let the Bots know that Team 'Ohana is inviting their WISH family to come visit its thread on Mondays. We thought this would be a good way for people on the teams/threads to get to know other WISHers better. Plus, 'Ohana like to think we know how to throw a party and we always like new guests! The drinks are free, if virtual, and no one will tell you when you've had enough. :upsidedow

I'll post a reminder on Monday, with a loose question/discussion topic to get the conversations going. There's no need to stick to the topic, of course, as it's really your sparking, non-alcoholic but still intoxicating presence that is requested. So, if you have a little time for socializing with your cousins, please stop by 'Ohana on Monday! :goodvibes

Jenn and everyone~ I have not run since the Goofy (plus 5K). Tomorrow morning I am going to go running with Cam and her friend Patty and her DH. I am going to take it easy and just get back into it slowly. I may run a couple miles and walk the rest since this is my first time back. I want to take it very easy and see what I can get out of my (hopefully) post-PF left foot. Things feel good since I've been off the meds since Tuesday. I have been to the YMCA for some biking and elliptical work which has not aggrivated the foot yet. THat is good news.

I'll post a report tomorrow.
