The body is in the woods...

If you are familiar with South Jersey, there are the Pine Barrens (Jersey Devil) and woods all over. I hope it was a sick joke. I f not, I agree, a very
stupid criminal leaves a message like that!

Exactly what I was thinking! The Jersey Devil!:scared1: I'm from LBI. Just thinking and remembering those pine barrens creep me out.:scared1: I live near woods and mtns here and don't think about the Jersey Devil but one thought of the pine barrens and my hair stands on end!

:scared1:

If this WAS a joke...don't you think the police would have mentioned that this has been going on...people drunk dialing...stating that the "body is in the woods"?

OP, how did the police react that came to your home?

I would have called the police. Scary crap.

Keep us updated.

The police took it seriously. They wrote the entire message down word for word and he was in radio contact with someone as he took the info.

Ok, I know I'm from Jersey, but this is really weird. My DH and I went out to dinner the other night. When we got home I did a few things and when I sat
down to read I noticed there was a message on the answering machine. I started listening to the message and realized it was a wrong number. As I
listened the guy was saying he was "at the hotel", "the body was in the woods", and "come get the car".:scared1: I played it back for my DH because
I wanted to make sure I had heard correctly. We called the police and they came and took the info and said they would see if anybody is reported missing, etc. Freaky!!!

That is insane!!! I would have called the cops too....even if it is kids pranking. Let a cop visit scare the crap outta them!!

Let us know if you hear anything else..

Oh my gosh! I would be completely freaking out. I do hope they are able to solve it. Do you have caller ID on the phone? I'm sure the police already checked, but I'm curious if the number came up.

When I was in middle school (back when caller ID first became popular) we had kids who thought it would be fun to freak out the girls in town by emulating Scream. :scared1: I unfortunately was on the receiving end of several of those calls, as well as a very scary man who calls and tries to find girls home alone so he can sexually harass them. Thankfully he never took it that far because my mom knew what was going on when she got on the other line, but it scared me half to death because he said he was going to kill me. I was the only one he ever called twice.

After that we got caller ID with anonymous call block and have had no problems since. Perhaps you can do that on yours, block anonymous calls? I don't know how well it works this day in age with the proliferation of prepaid phones, but it might be worth checking into for your own peace of mind. Please keep us updated.

The call really did come from a hotel, not a cell phone.

If this was truly a crime...what an idiot... I mean, leaving a message?? IDIOT!

some of them are not to smart. We had a guy who robbed a gas station and then went back to his place leaving tracks in the snow. DUMB

That's so creepy!!! Back in the '70's, my aunt and uncle lived in a huge house on the outskirts of town. Somewhat remote, up at the top of a hill. A kind of creepy looking house to start out with. My aunt started getting phone calls from a man who said he was watching her. He knew her name and seemed to be aware of when she was coming and going. (She had a hair appointment the same day and time each week and he was aware of that.) He finally said he was coming to the house to attack her. She did call the police at that point -- I have no idea why she didn't call sooner -- but I don't think they ever figured out who it was. Thank God for caller ID, today, is all I can say!

To the OP -- please follow up and let us know what happens with this story!

Creepy...hope they figure out whether it was pranking teens or real criminals, soon. That would have freaked me out!

Does this mean we have a new "watch" thread? Extreme Wrong Number Watch 2009? ;)

When I was in jr. high, a friend's family took some girls on a short trip to a city with an amusement park, etc. The family had 2 girls and each girl took a friend. We were all stair-stepped in age, so we were about 12-14 years old. We stayed upstairs in a motel with parking on one side of the room and a sliding glass door leading to a small balcony on the other side of the room. The parents were in one room, we girls were in the next room and an old couple was in the room next to us. At our age, they seemed ancient. :rotfl: I guess they were in their 60s, maybe even upper 60s. I don't know.....life had been hard on the woman.

We girls were in our room one night and at some point, the couple, who had been steadily drinking and yakking, started getting loud enough for us to actually understand. You know how lots of drunks get louder as they get drunker? ;) One of the girls had been sitting by the sliding door and she starting listening. She motioned for me to come over, so I did. We could make out bits of it, but not enough. So we turned the TV off and listened more carefully and could hear the old lady talking about her husband. Her DEAD husband.

When they got particularly loud or maybe they went back in their room for a minute, we cracked our sliding door so we could hear better. The conversation went on for quite a while, but the long and short of it was, she told him all about killing her elderly husband! I think he had been sickly and she wanted to be free taking care of him, so she offed him and now the two of them were having quite the time living on the money he had left her. :scared:

The next morning, we told my friend's parents, but they did not believe us. At first, they thought we were pulling their leg....And one of the girls was a world class fibber. :lmao: Then when the truthful girls insisted we'd heard it, they figured the couple had been pulling OUR legs. But we didn't think so. First, they'd have had to know we could have eventually heard them and second, I don't see keeping up a joke that goes on for HOURS while you go through who knows how many six packs of beer. Plus, the old guy was trying to get in her pants the whole time. He had his own agenda. :rotfl2: The whole conversation wasn't about murder. They talked about lots of other crap and people too. The murder was just interspersed here and there. No.....I think Murdering Molly was for real.

We checked out the next morning and nothing was ever said or done about it. :confused3

Weird, I've had a very similar voicemail once. I figured out it was a friend playing a trick on me though eventually heh

Hope you're not toooo freaked out!

OP, regardless if that was a prank or not, it's still really scary!!

You certainly did the right thing about calling the police

If there are any updates, keep us informed!!

ooooh creepy!

Now if it's from a hotel phone won't they get a print out when they check out of their "local" calls?
We got a crazy one once when I was young and foolish- about how someone was going to kill me. (definately not a friend of our fooling around either) But nothing ever happened. This was before the internet and I didn't worry about them really being able to find me.
But being in NJ now all I can say is:scared1:

They may get a list of long distance calls charged to the room, but if local calls are free they may not be listed. I used to travel for work years ago and stayed in a lot of motels. and don't remember receiving a list of local calls. Of course, most calls I made were either to my employer's voice mail system or using a calling card, both toll free numbers.

Now, the motel may have a list of what phone numbers each room called. Best bet is if the police can track down who was in the room.

All this reminds me of the Pine Barrens episode from the Sopranos, where Chris and Paulie lose their Russian "interior decorator".

Um, okay, I'm going to be honest here. After seeing one to many episodes of The Sopranos, I don't think I would have called the cops.

Like Java said, this is South Jersey. I wouldn't want it coming back on me that the reason this person got busted was because I called the cops. I think I would have just deleted the message and tried to forget about it.

Maybe that makes me sound like a horrible person, but this mob stuff is real and they are no joke. I wouldn't want them messing with me or my family.

OP, I'm not trying to scare you or anything. There are just a few groups of people I wouldn't want to tangle with and the mob would be one of them. :confused3
