The Black Eyed Peas just can't sing.

I can't comment on other performances of theirs, but you do need to keep in mind that the Superbowl half-time show is about as a "worst case scenario" as you can get for performing. If you think about it, pretty much any group/performer that's done so without lip-syncing in recent years has gotten panned in the reviews due to the way they sounded. Yes, they do a rehearsal, but I doubt there's anyway to do a meaningful game-day sound check.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I only have one word to describe what I saw on tv with the Black Eyed Peas and their 10 minute Tron commercial.

TERRIBLE !!!!!!

I usually love them and was not impressed. I did however get a giggle out of the dancers with the lighted boxes on their head. Their parents must be so proud.

Actually I am going to disagree. I have seen them live several times and they were amazing. I know just listening tonight that something was wrong with Fergie's mic. There was something off with the sound tonight and that stadium is not built for acoustics.

Trust me they sound way better than that.

I agree with this.. I think it was technical problems more then anything. Something just sounded "off".

lol I would have loved to be one of those lighted dancers!

I loved it. I can't help thinking that the mix in a large stadium throws things off.

While their performance was not spectacular, I love the BEP's, so they get a pass.

I thought Fergie did Sweet Child just fine with Slash.:confused3

First, I'm not a big black eyed peas fan so I can't say if they can sing or not but in their defense....

half time shows are really ridiculous IMO. first, have you tried to set up sound equipment in a major arena in less than 5 mins. that's why in the "good ole days" they simply sang to tracks.

You don't have time for mike checks, equipment checks and if there is a malfunction, wardrobe or not, there's no time for correction.

Then we expect them every year to top the previous year. and they have to do this in what 16 mins?

Can the celebrities and bring out some really good college marching bands, at least they are use to playing in a stadium.

I saw the BEPs many years ago when they were the opening act for Gwen Stefani. At that time, "My Humps" was getting REALLY popular. They actually were fantastic live and sounded good. I have found that when live acts perform on TV when TV is live, it sounds awful. And that goes for everyone/every year/at every super bowl. Yuck.

That said, I think the BEPs have gone way downhill. Starting with Boom Boom Pow and that generation of music, they use way to much autotune and then translates to live performances that cannot work with the original song. My DD (who is 19) said last night, they performance gets better and better as they perform their older songs.

I thought it was a fun show and I was thrilled they actually performed live. They might not have sounded "top notch", but I thought they did great.

I would give them a pass too. 30 seconds in, I said to DH, I can't hear Fergie....and I can barely hear the music track. There were definately big time audio problems.

:rotfl2: I was thinking the same. I thought all the singers sounded "off", with Fergie sounding the worst. But I thought she did fine with Sweet Child of Mine.

Go watch their concert from The Isle of Mann, which was a "real" concert... they sounded just as bad there, if not worse.

BEP is the very definition of a studio band, IMO.

She ruined one of my favorite songs from highschool.....

I had to turn on the real version of Sweet Child of Mine, just to get her horrible version out of my ears!!

Most people that seem to have liked the show have commented on the fact that they didnt lip sync...perhaps given how bad they were it would have helped or they've talked about the "show" and energy. I like singers that can actually, you know...SING!! If they just wanted an energetic halftime show, I've got some kids that could have gotten up on stage and ran around for 10 minutes.

I've never seen them live and had no interest in doing soon -- even before last night, but have heard some of their songs on the radio before and while not really a fan, I can stand to listen to them. I dont know if they get lots of "help" from processing while in the studio or if there were lots of issues with equipment last night but they were bad.

Where was the band?:confused3....under the stage?

I thought that the performance was appropriate for a SB halftime show, but was not inspired to see them again. Having them played during Spinning class is enough for me.

Ditto, there were clearly HUGE technical problems with the sound system. I'm not a BEP fan but I totally give them a pass, most of the issues were not their fault.

Many technical glitches made this show less than impressive. Pre-game and halftime entertainment were ok at best. Lea Michaels was up to the task of entertaining with her version of America The Beautiful.

I agree. For a SuperBowl performance, it wasn't bad. It was much better than the extremely slow Tom Petty show they had a few years ago or last year's "The Who" show.

I'm an old GNR fan, and I thought they did a pretty good Sweet Child of Mine.
Fergie at the very first did an excellent Axel Rose "snake dance."

They performed in Pittsburgh before a Steelers game two years ago and I thought they sounded pretty bad on TV.

A friend was there to see it live and said they sounded great. Maybe they just don't come across well on TV?
