Sorry for the delay, but I was too cheap to pay for Internet on the ship, although I heard the connection wasn't too great.
Getting there was a breeze, once I realized I kept asking the GPS to avoid toll roads (it was telling me it would take almost 3 hours to get to the port – I don’t think so).
Avis rental return was easy and a quick ride over in the shuttle. I had to wait about 10 minutes in line, checked in and was ready to board – I arrived around 12:45. Had a quick lunch at Topsiders – the food was pretty good but I almost had a heart attack when the cast member told me they did not have any diet coke. However, this was quickly fixed. Did a quick tour of the spa and changed my Friday appointment for “alone time” to “body purifying” – more on that treatment later.
It’s been about 2 years since my last cruise so I’m not sure if this is now standard operating for the cruise line industry or if this is DCL specific. But there were cast members handing out wipes for your hands at every eating venue. I had late seating with the first night in Parrot Cay. My tablemates were two families, each had a young teenager. I was a little nervous about being the only solo at the table but all was well. It turned out we had all booked Palo’s for the second night, so our table was empty, not sure where the kids went. Since I did Palo’s, I missed Lumieres and the last night was Animators Palate. The food was all good – as with most cruises I’ve done, nothing in the main dining room was ever served really hot, but I had no complaints.
We had the Golden Mickey’s the first night, which I thought was a cute show. After dinner I headed up to the deck to watch the movie, but for some reason there were no chairs around – they had hosed down the deck and all the chairs were wet. I found some dry ones up on deck 10, which would have worked fine, until it started to rain. By that time, I was tired and went to bed.
I did not leave the boat on our Nassau day. I slept late, had breakfast at Lumieres, then up to the quiet pool. I’m not a lay out in the sun person at all, but I did lay out in the shade and listened to the podcast and then to another book. When it got too hot, I went downstairs to the room for a nap.
I had a 6pm reservation for Palo’s, so that I could see the view. We were docked so that you could see Atlantis from the restaurant. We were supposed to leave Nassau at 7 but we did not set sail until about 7:30. The food was very good, however, there wasn’t a lot on the menu that appealed to me. They start you off with an antipasti and bread with different spreads. I didn’t care for any of the appetizers, however, they happily made me a ½ order of one of the pastas for an app. If I had been with some other people, I probably would have ordered one of the pizzas’s to start but I didn’t want to waste all that food. I had the filet, however, it came out medium leaning to medium well, just barely pink, which is way too done for me. It went back and a new one was brought out quickly, I had it with the red wine sauce and they also offered a blue cheese sauce. Of course I had to have the soufflé, it was the best thing on the menu, in my opinion. That alone was worth the price. Here are a few pictures from Palo’s:
I saw the late show that night, Twice Charmed which I enjoyed. After the show, it was time for the pirate’s party. However, just before the show, I ran into Kevin and John. They graciously asked me to join them and Kevin’s parents for a while; we talked (they mentioned that the podcast cruise was going to have some great stuff – but nothing specific, not even a hint!) and then watched the fireworks from the quiet pool area. Here’s a picture of me and the “boys”……
