The "big drop" sensation: what does it feel like to you?

I hate big drops because of that feeling you get in your stomach (and for me, all over my body), so I often avoid rides with it. However, that doesn't seem to be a sufficient explanation to some people. I find that if I say it gives me a headache, makes me nauseous, jostles me around too much - that seems to work and they leave me alone. However, if I just say I don't like the big drop sensation, I am just considered wimpy. Not a big deal, just something I thought would be interesting to discuss!

All of you out there who also hate big drops, what does it feel like to you? I have a hard time explaining the sensation, all I know is that after riding EE, my nerves were shot all over my body and I felt weak. I'd like a better way to explain it, if any of you have one.

On the flip side, to those who love big drops, what does it feel like to you?

Here's a tip for those who hate big drops: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=590442&highlight=big+drop

When my oldest was about 3 she announced the tummy dropping sensation by loudly proclaiming, "Daddy, that tickled my *crotch*".

I don't think DH will ever forget that description.

DS5 says "That made my p*$#s feel funny!"

I don't feel the drop as much as I just feel my reaction to it. Everyone says it is just nerves - but it isn't. I want to ride! Even my DH didn't believe me until he drug me onto a coaster and I lost my lunch. :sad2: I also have felt light headed (thought I was going to pass out) and had numbness in my legs from riding coasters.

What is funny is that I can ride simulators and spin all day. It doesn't bother me at all. Even M:S! (Of course, it is fine for my DH to say he can't ride those because they give him a headache! I've never made him prove it! :lmao:)

It is something about coaster people... if you can't do what they do you'll get called a wimp!

I love the adrenaline rush from rides like SM, RnRC, ToT, EE, etc. Like it is for you, the feeling is hard to describe. Rides like ToT & SM make my stomach or chest feel like it's coming out of my body (weird description, I know). It's like the expression when someone get's scared and says "I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest". :yay:

I do not like the "big drop" sensation very much. However, I do love ToT and also EE, which I, for Everest, I do not get that sensation going down the big drop. I also enjoy the Superman ride at Six Flags NE, although I don't like the drop sensation. I guess I'm able to deal with it, as on roller coasters, it only seems to last for a few seconds going down hills etc.

To me it feels like someone punched me in the stomach. It's painful and feels like the wind has been knocked out of me. I can relate. My husband is a roller coaster junkie, and he doesn't get me at all. People who don't have that pain generally don't have too much empathy for us "wimps". I just tell him that after he has given birth to three children he can call me a wimp.:rotfl:

This is my favorite feeling EVER!! Of course, that might make me weird, but this is also coming from someone who LOVES the hiccups. Anywho...to me, it's a huge dose of adrenaline and I do feel all tingly and revved up. When I drop, it definitely makes my stomach tickle a bit and I just love the weightless feeling too.

I think it's so magical!

That's what it feels like for my son, too. Actually, just driving over hills makes him say that, too.

I don't always like drops, I don't always dislike them. I learned that, for me, sitting in the very BACK of Splash allows me to tolerate the feeling more. And I learned that, at least on smaller drops, if I inhale as we go up, then exhale in a controlled fashion on the way down, I actually do NOT get the icky feeling at all.

I didn't get to go to TOT at WDW in December, but plan to in September, and I'm going to experiment as much as I can with those drops. Though TOT is different for me, as it's not a drop or a fall, but a *pull*, and at DCA at least I can feel the difference, it's much more controlled to me.

I also hate the sensation I get from large drops. For me, it feels like my heart is coming up into my throat, all my muscles tighten and then hurt, and I just feel "sick". I also find it difficult to describe to others, because people who havn't experienced the feeling, can't understand. I wouldn't even ride Pirates of the Caribbean or Maelstrum until I was about 15 because that small drop made me sick. I have gotten a bit better and can tolerate rides with small drops. People make fun of me for not being able to ride certain things, but I don't let it bother me.

I feel like I was kicked in my stomach and I can't catch my breath (my brother used to do this to me when I was a kid ). It is only for a second but during that second I am teriffied. I can do EE but after Splash I was crying and so was my DD, she doesn't like it either. But I am glad I did it so I can at least say I did it. I have yet to try ToT. I did one of those kiddy drop things that only went 20 feet in the air at a local amusement park and about died so I don't think I can handle ToT. :rotfl:

I love all roller coasters and have no problems with "the drop" on a roller coaster.

However, I can't take the drop on ToT. I hate the sensation that I get from the "free fall." It is a very disconcerting, uneasy, and upsetting feeling. I don't get sick from it. I just don't like it and see no point in doing something that isn't pleasing to me -- especially when I am on vacation. :)

I hate drops.. I feel like my body leaves the seat and I will fall out or for some odd reason my mind starts thinking of Final Destintation where the ride came off the tracks!! It ends up to where I dont enjoy the ride at all b/c the drop is all I can think about.. Once I almost passed out , took the most HUMILIATING pic on the drop which turned out to NOT be bad at all..DH still says he should have bought the pic..LOL

It feels like my stomach goes into my throat. I've found that holding my breath when going over a drop lessens the sensation (actually, my Dad passed along that tip when I was little :goodvibes ).

Of course, that doesn't work very well on ToT. It's hard to hold your breath when you're screaming at the top of your lungs. :cutie:

I'm very on & off with drops! It all depends on whether i feel brave at the time. :lmao:

But i don't generally like drops, it depends on how big the drop is! I don't think i'd ever be able to do ToT that's just too much for me! I haven't got the guts to do that. BUT i'm absolutely fine on simulator rides! I LOVE them but i suppose it's the 'ilusion' of some sort of drop rather than an actual drop? :confused3

When i'm actually going down a drop i get this horrible 'rush' feeling all over my body - like i'm going to fall out of my skin? & i feel like i can't breathe, i have a habit of punching the wind down a drop because it helps a little bit :rolleyes1 & it also feels like i've been punched in the stomach. But again it depends on the size of the drop.

:scared1:, I can't scream while I'm on TOT, I'm convinced it would be the death of me :rotfl:

I lay my head on my husband's shoulder and hold on tight for dear life:eek: after about the 4th drop, I'm usually good:rolleyes1

I am the same way! I can do ride sims and spin and go upside down no problem. Only big drops make me hesitate.

And I would LOVE to go on every ride too. I am always disappointed that my body can't handle the drops.

That's so funny that you love hiccups.... don't think I've heard of anyone like that before! Thanks for your input... I think it all boils down to different people have different types of feelings when going down a drop. Reminds me of the love/hate cilantro debate.
