The Bible Verse Thread

My favorite Scripture:

1 Thessalonians 4

The Coming of the Lord

13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Come quickly Lord Jesus!

Hard to pick favorites, but some that are up there...

Psalm 103: 11-13
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

Psalm 139: 13-16
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

They're all good...really? Here are my favorites off the top of my head but for different reasons I'm sure. :smokin:

1 Timothy 6: 1- 3
1 Timothy 2:11 - 12
Colossians 3:22
Isaiah 45:7
Exodus 21:10
Exodus 21:20-21
Genesis 29:28
Ezekiel 25:17

Psalm 118:18
The Lord has chastened me severely, but He has not given me over to death.

My favorite if I am picking just one is probably Romans 8:28,
"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. "

Lots of scriptures that I gain encouragement, faith, strength, and courage from but here are a couple of favorites:

Micah 7:8
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

Philippians 2:16
Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

Hebrews 12:1
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 11:13-16
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

John 14:1-3

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God[a]; trust also in me. 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

1 Peter Chapter 3: 1-2

Likewise ye wives, be in subjection to your husbands; that if any obey not the word, they may without the word be won by the behavior of the wife--while they behold your chaste behavior coupled with fear....

I lived by this before my husband was saved... and another is

Deuteronomy chapter 28: 1 - 14 --The Blessings of the Lord

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

2 and all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.

3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city,
and blessed shalt thou be in the field.

4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body,
and the fruit of thy ground,
and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine,
and the flocks of thy sheep.

5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.

6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in,
and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

7 ¶ The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.

8 The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

9 The LORD shall establish thee a holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

10 And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.

11 And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

12 The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

13 And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

14 and thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Thank you JESUS for all you have done for me!!

I updated the list.

What type of Bible do you have?

I have a NLT Study Bible, and I love it!

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
~ Psalm 23

What type of Bible do you have?

I have a: New American Standard Bible - Key Word STUDY BIBLE (has all the: Hebrew and Greek words in it!)
I love it! It's so great!

P.S. I love this thread. :)

Some more favorites:

1 Corinthians 1:18 (New International Version)

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

John 10:28 (New International Version)

28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

What type of Bible do you have?

I use the NIV.

My two faves are Psalm 91 - I love the promises God makes to us at the end (my mantra verse from it is "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways")

And Mark 11:24-25

"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it , and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

The Bible I use is The Student Bible NIV

New to this, so a quick question: have y'all always had the same favorite verse or does it change over time?

My reasons for liking the verses I chose are: for Psalms, I liked the protection God promises in it especially since we're just recently born again and I know we're being/going to be tested by the enemy; and for Mark, I like the "simple faith" it reminds me to have and the importance of forgiving others.

But I wonder as I continue my walk if my faves will change.

for me, it changes. I still love ones that would have been listed under "favs" but like you say, as you grow in your walk, new scripture touches your heart.

Deut. 6:4-9 will always be a favorite for me though. I just think those are some of the most awesome words ever "spoken".

Interesting, my neighbor gave me my bible - it used to be hers - and I just looked up your verses and they're highlighted. :)

My wife's favorite is probably Romans 8:28: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Mine are more along the thought provoking type and due to the power of the images they bring to mind...
John 11:35 "Jesus wept."

Luke 2:19: "But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."

Matthew 5:43-48

43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.' 44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(NIV)

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.(NLT)

Ephesians 2: 8-10

8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

James 1:19-21

19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. 21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.(NLT)

James 4:13-17

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.(NLT)
