The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves! (my journal)

Hey Don!

Thanks for sharing your pictures! :thumbsup2

So, how are you doing? Have any big plans for the Easter weekend?

I hope you and your family have a Happy Easter! :sunny:

Hi Cam, Tracy, minnie61650, Amy (or Dan! ;) ), thanks for stopping by and your good WISHes! Easter plan so far is to head to the in-laws for the family egg hunt, but we might get rained out.

Well, I've been off the caffeine for 6 days now, gonna try and stay off this time. I've had a few soda's, but have been making sure they were decaf, and had a couple of powerades instead. Seems like the carbonation really clogs up my throat, I'm a singer and fight phlegm (sorry) all the time anyway, so I really need to stay away from the carbonation. Funny, that word looked weird to me, like it was misspelled, but its not. Carbo Nation, is that where we all live? :lmao: Haven't been out walking lately, letting work get in the way, and TV at home. Too much TV at our house lately, we're all addicted Lost and American Idol. DW likes survivor, me not so much. Enjoyed the recent Lost episode about Hurley, just found a nice little blurb about him (real name is Jorge Garcia) saying he's lost about 30 lbs. Says now he can afford not to live on rum and burritos now. When I see overweight celebrities that I like, I just want to see them lose it. I'm a big John Goodman fan, seems like he goes up and down the times that I've seen him lately. I really miss John Candy and Chris Farley, tragic waste.

So, the free dining thing has really got me going with the planning bug again. Can't hardly stand myself. Like I mentioned in Tracy's journal, the one thing that scares me about a Sept. trip is the heat+humidity. I've lived most of my life in a very dry climate, and have never had much tolerance for humidity. Wish they'd build a Disney park in Denver, it has about the best climate in the country for me, here's the secret, it snows a few times each year usually, but it all melts off in a few days most every time. I would guess that a Denver park if managed properly could stay open almost all year. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating, but personally I'd rather be in Denver in January than Orlando in August. Utah's weather is similar, but seems to stay colder and keep the snow on the ground longer. Anyhow, WHEN (not if) we lose weight the heat+humidity won't bother us as much, so that won't be as much of a concern, more of a triumph!

If we don't make a free-dining trip I'd like to take another December trip for MVMCP. We skipped it last time, and now with our interline discount on Disney resorts we could make a short trip for a relatively low cost. MNSSHP and MVMCP appeal to me not just because of how neat they look, but also because they cost less than a single day park ticket. Seems to me that if you rest up and then show up at the MK at 4, you have a full 8 hours to enjoy the park. I also love the parks after dark. With the free dining trip we would have to buy a 1 day ticket minimum, and I would love to ride the Yeti, plus I would love to do EHM evening at AK, I think that would be very cool. But with the Dec. trip we could possibly just do MVMCP, and then take the family to Seaworld, seems like everyone's next choice of park. I'd also like to go to Grinchmas at the U place. So many things to see and do!! So my budget consciousness took me to inquire, is there a city bus perhaps to take one from WDW to Seaworld, so I hit the Lynx website and, viola!! :teeth: , there a bus running every 1/2 hour from the TTC to Seaworld, 20 minute ride, $1.50 each. Works for me!!

OK, sorry for the long post, I'm losin' it here. :hyper: and I haven't even had any caffeine!
Good day all! pirate:

Hi Don~

Way to go being off of caffeine for 6 days! That is wonderful! Just be sure to add in some quick walks and you are on your way!

Ya know... I used to sing in high school. I was in every choir there was and I was also in show choir. (Show choir was sooo much fun! :Pinkbounc ) Anyhow, my choir director used to tell us that dairy products would create excess phlegm in our throats and to avoid them 24-48 hours before a performance. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but it worked for us! Our show choir won tons of Grand Championships, even in Orlando! (The trip that started the Disney craze for me! :goodvibes )

We are so super excited about the free dining thing! :jumping1: We already have our ADRs booked! :woohoo: If you and your family are able to go to WDW in September for the free dining, you'll have a great time trying new restaurants and eating for free! If you go in December, you'll have a great time at MVMCP (We loved it!). As for the weather.... We went to WDW in September 2003 and it was hot! It is a much different experience than going in December. However, if you plan ahead, you can still have a great time despite the heat and humidity. (Drink lots of water! :fish: Get plenty of rest! :faint: Schedule lots of breaks! Drink lots of water! :drinking:)

Hope you have a great weekend! Happy Easter! :sunny:

Hi Don, good job with the caffeine! Its a tough habit to break. You are right, Denver does have a great climate, I should know I have lived here for over 30 years! If you don't like humidity I would stay away from Orlando in the summer months thats for sure! Keep up the good work, you are doing great!

Amy (no idea why I put my husband's name in my signature, just a habit from being part of a couple for so long!)

Hi Don!!!! Congrats on being off the coke for some many days.....you did it once you can do it again!!!

Believe it or not, I don't think that heat/humidity is really all that bad in August/Sept in Orlando now. The first year we went (2004) I was miserable....I could not wait to go home! Last year I didn't think it was all that bad! I was born and raised in Denver and have been here all my life, so it was a cahnge to me!!! You are right about the snow.....it all melts the same day. Might be a little chilly to have a Disney park here, but I am all for it. Bring it on!!!!

Hope you are having a wonderful day! Thanks for sharing your pictures....I don't know why, but you DW looks very familiar to me. Didn't you say you used to live here in Denver somewhere??

Hi everyone, thanks for posting. Jamie, we lived in Thornton, near 104th and Colorado Blvd. Elaine worked at Dish Network for a while. We enjoyed Colorado, but work brought us back to Utah, and it is a little more condusive to having a large family over here. We used to get looks at King's Soopers (grocery store) with 3 kids, imagine if we took all 5 with us now!! :rotfl:

Well, got some tough news today. :sad1: My dad is 83 yrs old, was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago, and has had a couple of incidents since then that have really taken him down. 1st he had a really bad reaction to drugs that they gave him when he went in for the microwave prostate treatment thing that they do, put him on a respirator for a couple of days and left his mind a little shaky. Then last year he took a header off a ladder into the asphalt, trying to climb on the roof to fix the swamp cooler at his shop. Had some inter-cranial bleeding and hurt his back. That also took a week or 2 for him to pull through, and left his mind even more shaky. He's never been the same, and the cancer has progressed. My mom, his 2nd wife, was killed in a car accident when I was 8, so he's all I've had since then. Had a pretty good relationship with his 3rd wife, but they divorced a few years ago and she passed away too. His (4th) wife has been taking good care of him, she's a nurse, but he's been getting worse, and today she called and said she thinks its about over, he can't keep any food down, and refuses to go to the hospital anymore. They moved to St. George a couple of years ago, 4 hours south of here, 2 hours from Vegas, so I haven't had too many chances to get down to see him. Last time was when I went down to see Andrew play football in Vegas. Had a good but fairly short visit. I'm going to head down there either on Friday or Sunday, depending on how bad he's getting.

It didn't really hit me until I was driving home from work talking to his wife, I said I wanted to come down, I didn't want to miss him, but that I'd been missing him for a couple of years already. He's a very intelligent man, we used to talk for hours about everything, science, politics, religion, but when I visit him now the conversations are brief. He's never been able to remember my kids very well, mostly just Andrew, but I know that he cares about them. It was fun to have then stand together when we stopped there, they're the same size now! He's had a lot of struggles in his life, but has never been mean, or even angry that I've seen. He's always seemed to want to do what's right, even when everybody else thought it was wrong. His wife just called while I was typing this, so that I could talk to him for a second. Got about 3 sentences out of him before he said he was handing the phone back to her.

Anyway, I went to get a drink on the way home, wanted to get a caffeine free Coke or Pepsi out of the fountain, they didn't have either, so i broke down and had a Dr. P. It wasn't that good, not worth it. Also we're on pins and needles a little bit at work because our little company is about to be bought out by a big one. All the talk has been very positive, but its definitely anxious times. Yup, Dr. P is my stupid stress pill.

Mowed the lawn tonight, 2 weeks of heavy growth, wore me out, didn't realize how out of shape I've become, that'll have to change. Might play some dunkball tomorrow, seems to be an unofficial weekly thing possibly on Thursdays. Last week I didn't bring any workout clothes to change into so I missed out. Have to make sure I bring them this time.

Sorry for the long post, and the downer, but you folks have been a great support to me and I really appreciate it. Sorry I haven't posted so much in your journals, selfish of me, I'll try and catch up.
:disrocks: :thumbsup2

Don,

Please don't apologize for coming here to share your thoughts and feelings. Your WISH friends are here to support you in good times and in not so good times. Please don't worry about our journals either. We'll be here. Just be sure and take good care of you and your family at this difficult time. :grouphug:

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. :grouphug:

Hi Don,

So sorry to hear what is going on with your father...you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. You know we are all here to listen....

One slip of the D. P is not going to kill you....with it not tasting so good, maybe that is a good sign!!! Way to go on mowing the lawn..You can count that as good exercise!

104th....my DH worked at Dish Network....it was back in 1997 - 1998 I believe....I just can't get over how familiar your wife works.....huh...who knows!

Hope you are having a great day. Keep your head up

Hi, Don! Just wanted to stop in to offer some prayers and good wishes. I am sorry your father's health has declined so much over the past few years. I am glad to know you have happy memories of times together and a very positive perception of him as a person and as a father. That is so wonderful.
I hope you get to play some pick-up ball tonight. It will be a great stress reliever for you.
Sending hugs, my friend. Keep us posted on how you are doing, okay?

Hi Don, I am so sorry about your dad and am really keeping you and your family in my prayers. That is a hard thing to go through. My own mother is all I have (father died when I was 7) and she has Alzheimers now and it is so hard and hurts so bad to have somebody you love leave you mentally and physically. Hang in there and please keep sharing with us, we are all here for each other. One Dr. Pepper is actually not so bad, in the old days you would have much more right? So celebrate your victory that you had one and didn't even think it tasted that good. And good for you mowing your yard, thats excellent exercise. Keep up the good work, and good thoughts for you and your family! :grouphug:

Amy

Don, I'm sorry to hear about your father. It sounds like he was a real inspiration for you growing up. You must miss him terribly. I hope your visit with him goes well. Sending prayers your way - :sunny:

Hi Don,

Just wanted to pop in and say hi! Hope all is well today....

Have a great weekend...

Hi Don,
I too am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. :grouphug:
Hope you have a nice visit with your dad.

I am keeping you and your family in my prayers.

Please Keep us posted.

Praying for you & your family, Don. I know this is a hard time. My FIL lost his mental capacity to Parkinsons long before it took his life, and my mom had alzheimers. Not an easy time for the family.

A little DP won't kill you! Take care of you!!

Hi Don.....

Just wanted to stop by and let you know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug: How are you doing? Please update us when you can.

Take care,
Tracy

Hi Don,

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that we are all still thinging of you :grouphug: How did your visit go?

Hope you had a good weekend. Keep your head up

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers, I really appreciate it.

Well, I drove down to see my dad on Friday, wasn't sure if i was going to go Friday or Sunday, but his wife called me (after I had already driven north to work!) and I guess I had kind of led her to believe I was coming Friday, so she said she had told him and he was looking forward to seeing me. I told her I had kind of decided to wait until Sunday, but she said she didn't think that was a good idea, that she wasn't sure he'd last that long. So I told her I'd come right away, told my boss, she was fine with that (my manager) so took off for St. George. Stopped at home for a little while, and then headed on down. Got there about 4pm, and I was definitely a little scared, maybe that'd he'd already gone, but also just scared to know that this would most probably be the last time I saw him. He did seem glad to see me, but was very weak, tho didn't seem to be in any pain. Spent about an hour with him, then gave him a break for about an hour, then came back for a while. Couldn't really have a real conversation with him, he was pretty much down to yes and no answers, and when he did try to tell me something, he seemed pretty delirious. Talked mostly with his wife, collected some of his things, talked about arrangements. I did ask him if he was scared to die, he pretty emphatically said "No." He has very strong faith in God and that this is definitely not the end. It kind of helped me feel better, I kind of struggle sometimes with my faith. Finally I gave him a hug and said goodbye, and took off for home. Drove about 700 miles total that day, got home at 3am. Probably could have stayed over somewhere, but just really wanted to get home. His wife said she would call me with any news, didn't call me Saturday, so I called her Sunday morning. He's still hanging on, but she says she thought it was good I came when I did, getting tougher now.

Kinda tough to concentrate on anything else, but lumping along here. Thanks again for your support. :)

:grouphug: Don,

I am so glad to hear that you had a chance to see your dad and spend some time with him. We are keeping him, you, and your family in our thoughts and prayers. :grouphug: Take care, Don! :grouphug:

Don, I am so glad that you were able to make the trip to see your dad and so sorry you are going through this tough time. It sounds like your dad is really at peace with where he is at which is good but I know it is hard for you. Take care and keep us posted. :grouphug:
