THE AMAZING RACE #19 official thread. No Spoilers!! Premieres Sept. 25

I didn't notice this last week, but "Ma" Cathi sounds exactly like the actress Debra Jo Rupp, the mom from That 70's Show.

I was thinking the same thing. I like ma, but not PA.

I wonder if I would of read the sign. I tend to read everything I see, but I am also a speed reader and tend to read only what I need to read, and I think that is what happened.

I think "Ma" sounds just like Fran's mom from The Nanny.
Tonight's check-in was nuts. It didn't seem like the orphanage people should have been handing out the clues, based on the sign, which could be interpreted as misleading.

So glad my two favorite teams read the sign and moved up to 1st and 2nd place!! :thumbsup2

WOW! Did not see that one coming!!!! Ethan and Jenn gone just like that. I guess that 'splains why they were hardly featured either episode.

OK, if it were me, and now this is just me sitting at home on my big comfy couch, not running a race for a million dollars under due pressure, if I saw a sign written in ENGLISH in a foreign country, I think I would take a closer look at it, especially since the only thing the teams have to go on are CLUES.

Anyone think that Bill (the old man) looks like John Lithgow? If you have the preview for next week DVR'd, check him out when he is making a face in the taxi, and one of the last scenes in the preview, they show him looking up. Freeze frame that image, and he is spot on John Lithgow.

I don't know the brother and sister names yet, but I told DH, if I were the brother at that train station, I would have to call home and tell my parents that I pushed, oops, I mean my sister fell in front of a train. Sorry. Good Lord if I were in a race for a million dollars with someone like her, I think I would do something very very bad.

I was sorry to see Ethan and Jenn go home. :( I didn't want them to win, since they've each won a million dollars before, but did want them to stick around a whole lot longer than they did.

And I was really happy the older couple did so well this time. DH figured they would go home for sure, so I was happy they didn't. :)

The brother/sister team CAN go home anytime though. Their constant bickering is already getting old.

I kind of like the two young guys that came in first this time, but I can't remember their names. I like the father/son team too.

I was sorry to see Ethan and Jenna go, too.

DH is ready to throttle the bickering siblings--we can get that for free at home!

It always annoys me when they have these equalizers, especially right after a non-elimination leg. I suppose they want to keep the teams fairly "together", but it doesn't seem all that fair.

Not sorry to see the two men leave--their hearts just didn't seem to be in the race, you know? They seemed to be having fun, but not a real competitive spirit.

The twins and the cocktail waitresses seemed to step up their game, so maybe they'll hang around longer. I thought they were both goners last week.

I agree with you. It was one of those things that you have to ask, how could they not see this big sign sitting right there where they turned in the money, written in English and not take a minute to read it. Come on!!!

For me, this type of stumbling block, is what I like seeing. Make the teams be aware of whats going on around them.

ITA. This season really seems to be starting out quite differently from previous seasons. Quite a few clues that really make them think (the red and yellow e-balloons and that easily-overlooked sign). The contestants are going to need to keep their thinking caps on and pay attention to ALL the details before heading on.

I'm glad the snowboarders came in first last night! I'm already liking those guys. I was sad the gay couple went home already - I was hoping they'd stick around with their wonderfully positive, supportive attitudes. The brother/sister team can take their bickering butts on home right now as far as I'm concerned.

So far, my two favorite remaining teams are the snowboarders and mom & dad. :thumbsup2

:rotfl: My DH said the same thing. He said that it would probably be amazing to because after her screaming and ranting and raving NO ONE in the train station would have seen anything. Even the production crew/cameramen would be going "Nope, we didn't see anything". . . :rolleyes1

They need to go and they need to go FAST or I will be watching this season with the mute button in my hand!

So sad that Ethan and Jenna are gone. I did like them and thought they would go further. I don't really have any favorites yet, just want the brother/sister team OUT!

We also thought it was funny the snowboarders won a trip to Ireland. Somehow golf and spa don't seem like something they would enjoy. Of all the places they could have gone that was probably near the top of their lists!

The money at the orphanage thing was confusing. I don't understand why they were giving the clue if they didn't give all the money. When Phil explained it I thought that maybe they would give them something very general (like an entrance ticket or a trinket) if they didn't hand over all the money and they would get a AR envelope with a clue that explained where to go with it if they completed it correctly. That way to find the pit stop they would have to eventually go back to the orphanage and find the sign. I have no idea why most of the teams didn't take the time to read it-- the game is all about the details.

But with the way they did it I was disappointed that they then TOLD them they had to go back and give the money. Phil should have just said "you did not complete the task" and let them figure it out.

Stupid football game! The only good thing about it is, we switch to winter dress code at work tomorrow, aka no more jeans. Except the day after a Patriots win ;).

Why is that a good thing? ;)

The snowboarders remind me of the two Ivy league kids, BJ and ?, who won in a previous season.

Sorry to see Ethan and Jenna go so early. Shows you how different AR is from Survivor. The social game really doesn't come into play as much on AR.

I honestly don't know if I would have seen the sign. You may think it was obvious, but when you are focused on doing one thing (turning in the money and scooting out of there), you may not see everything you need to see. Besides, how often have clues/information been given to the racers outside of the normal means?

I read an interview with van Meunster where he said there would be a few new things this season. We've seen a couple... Wouldn't it be great if they had a "swap your partner" option - maybe in conjunction with a square dance challenge? If you win that leg, you can send your sister :lmao: home and bring in anyone else you know.

That would have made it even sooo much better. Make them actually stop, slow down, look, and get it right.

I totally agree.

I was sad to see the flight attendants go last night. I liked them and they were always so supportive.

Last night's dinner was Basko which is an Indonesian meatball soup. I made it using this recipe: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/17/earlyshow/living/recipes/main7062422.shtml but I didn't like the chicken meatballs. I should have skipped the sugar. Blech. I served it with rice vermicelli noodles instead of egg noodles.

The other thing that was odd was that after the first few the rest of them obviously knew about the not donating their money before they were on the mat. There was no shocked reaction--it was obvious they had already been asked/told about that part. We wondered if there was a production issue of some sort (hard to believe) or if they just all pretty much arrived together and heard the discussion with the team before them.

Usually when they don't complete a task or are getting a penalty they are totally shocked when Phil tells them.

All in all it was just a very strange ending.

I thought the brother was worse than the sister. What did he want her to do/say? I wasn't sure how the argument got started. They HAD to take the overnight train - it said so right on the clue. It's not like they had a choice. But, yeah - they can go!

I never watch Survivor, so don't know Ethan & Jenna. He was OK, but she seemd full of herself. Great that he beat cancer.

As a West Coaster, spoilers on this thread is fine by me. I freak out every Olympics when people title a thread with a particular winner of an event. We get Olympic events 3 hours after the East Coast. Even when the Olympics are in the West (Vancouver, LA, Utah...) we get them taped-delayed to fit into PrimeTime.

I got the impression that the conversations with Phil were heavily edited. Since so many teams didn't see the sign it would have taken an hour just to show the teams' entire "go back" conversations. :rotfl: The shocked expressions would have been when they first showed up:

Edited out:

Phil - You didn't complete the task
Team - :scared1: HUH?
Phil - There was a sign on the table stating that you had to turn in ALL of your money.
Team - Oh, crap! :headache:

What we saw:

Phil - Did you leave ALL of your money?
Team - (sadly) No

Am I on the only one who can't stand the Asian-American girl?
