The All-New "unofficial" AKL/AKV's Jambo & Kidani FAQ thread.....

My brain must still be on vacation. I just spent 15 minutes looking for AKL part 2 and finally realized it was the Dec. 2010 thread that went to a part 2.

We arrived back home last night from a 1-week stay at AKL – Jambo House. We had booked a Savannah View room and requested Zebra Trail, third floor, Arusha Savannah, midway. Our room assignment was on Arusha Savannah but Kudu Trail, second floor, next to furthest out section. Our CM was very helpful in trying to relocate us and we agreed to a room change after our first night out on Kudu Trail. My DH has battled vertigo since July and we preferred the Zebra trail location for ease in getting to places without so much walking. Our second room was #3505, located just 3 doors away from the elevators down to Mara, which made it easy for me to run back and forth with our mugs.

We saw animals every morning from our balcony except for the morning we slept in and they had already been taken to the barns for check ups and clean up of the Savannah. We were in the room until just past noon on departure day (we were allowed a late check out) and Arusha Savannah was full of animals. While I loved the experience of seeing all the African animals from the comfort of our own room I doubt that I would stay at AKL again because we depend on WDW transportation and it is true that the bus transportation from AKL Jambo House is lacking. As others have reported, part of the problem is that the bus first stops at Kidani Village and if it filled up there it would skip Jambo House. And most of our buses filled to standing room only before departing AKL. We seemed to have the poor luck of often arriving just as the bus for the theme park we were headed to had pulled out. Therefore, our average bus wait time from AKL was 20 – 25 minutes. The worst time was 34 minutes and we did not even see the previous bus pull out! The one time that we only waited 10 minutes was great. Once, a group of fellow passengers stormed the back doors after a wheelchair was loaded and the driver forgot to close the back door. She did not make those passengers get off but gave them a stern lecture. DH & I were first in line to board from the front but all the seats were then taken. A young couple stood up and gave us their seats. We had much better luck catching buses back to AKL in the evening but we rarely stayed until park closing.

Our big splurge was going on the Wanyama Safari. It was wonderful! Our timing was much better with this. I booked it 6 months from the date we went on safari and chose the best weather day of our entire week. Our two guides were enthusiastic young women familiar with their savannahs and animals. The only animals we did not see were the red river hogs (it was too cold so they were being kept in the barns) and the guinea fowl. There were just 6 other people on the safari and we enjoyed their company at Jiko for our bountiful meal together after our safari.

I’ve saved a copy of the Private Dining pamphlet so I can answer questions you might have on that. We used it for breakfast 3 times. Guests on the DDP will redeem 2 TS meals from their meal plan balance for each person dining. A $3 delivery charge, applicable sales tax and 18% service charge will be added to all orders. We were on DxDP but only ordered for 1 person and split it. For 2 TS credits, all inclusive, we were able to order a 3-egg ham & cheese omelet served with choice of bacon or sausage and choice of breakfast potatoes or fresh fruit. Also included in our order was a pot of coffee and a large orange juice. We were surprised that 2 biscuits were also included in this ample meal for 1! Since I knew that they had pineapple at Boma I requested all pineapple for the fruit (we can not eat melon) and they accommodated this request. On the final day when we ordered this for just my husband they actually included both the potatoes and pineapple along with the other items. I went to Boma where I could get exactly what I wanted and then used my final leftover TS for 3 snacks at Mara to bring home to our grandchildren. 3 snacks for a TS is a poor trade but it’s better than letting them go to waste.

I'll try to answer any questions you have but may not get on the computer much more before Christmas. My husband's aunt died last week and we have a memorial service to go to on Thursday in addition to all the Christmas preparations I still have to do.

sorry about your DH aunt

I am hoping to get rooms in that same area, but now they aren't taking request anymore who knows...
when you get a chance, could you tell me what they served you at Jiko after the safari, we are doing this too in April..
thanks for the info about the buses, will make sure to add in extra time for any ADR's we need to make..
happy you had a fun trip and that your DH is better, have a wonderful Christmas!

Lisa, I am so sorry, but I can't find our menus from Jiko. We put both of ours to the left of my husband's place at the end of the table and I think we must have left them there. I did take photos but won't deal with them until January. Let's see what I can remember. First, you are each handed a nice bottle of Dasani water before your safari to take with you. The safari lasts about 90 minutes. When we returned to Jiko we met our hostess, waiter and chef and were each given a warm damp wash cloth to freshen up. Since this was a December safari we only needed these for our hands. 3 South African wines were served at a nice pacing throughout the meal service. Other beverages were also available. DH & I just requested water in addition to the wine. Baskets of assorted breads were placed on the table. They were more like crackers than soft bread. Appetizers included a delicious flatbread with chicken (the favorite of all 8 of us), some kind of tightly rolled pastry with a meat filling and another meat in a pastry. There were bell peppers and cucumbers in sides that accompanied the second & third dish. DH & I were served special plates that did not include the bell peppers or cucumbers. A white wine was poured first. After the appetizers, a palate cleanser of sorbet with a liquor of some sort was presented. I liked this but some at our table thought it was very tart. There were three entrees, each served with sides. A red wine was poured before the entrees came to the table. I may mix up what sides came with each entree. I'll figure it out when I download my photos. There was a fantastic bass, a delicious chicken and their filet mignon with macaroni & cheese. The bass or chicken came with mashed potatoes and green beans and the other came with tiny roasted potatoes and other vegetables. All of the previous dishes were served family style. A sweet wine was served with dessert. At this time we were served individual plates that included a trio of mini desserts: crème brule (which paired nicely with the sweet wine) a chocolate mousse type serving and a denser chocolate covered cake type dessert. Since I had put down for all of our dinner reservations that we were celebrating our anniversary DH & I were also presented with a lovely decorated plate featuring strawberry sorbet and 2 gigantic chocolate covered strawberries! It was both lovely and delicious. No one left the table hungry, that’s for sure! In fact DH & I decided to omit breakfast the following morning since we had an early lunch planned at the Grand Floridian Café.

Kathy,
thanks for the info on the Jiko food, everything sounds yummy, except for the bass, I'm not a seafood lover....DD said everything sounded yummy too! happy to hear its family style so I guess we can pick and choose what main dish we want to eat?
I told them we are there celebrating Megan's 11th bday, so maybe she'll get a little extra something too!
look forward to seeing pics whenyou get a chance to post!

The bass was my favorite entree. It really was fantastic. I never liked seafood growing up but after several trips to the Caribbean I learned to enjoy it. Now I order it frequently although I don't cook it a lot. I did not finish my chicken. There were 8 of us on the Safari and they put down two platters of just about everything with 4 portions of each entree per platter. You do have a menu at your place when you arrive for dinner and I expect that if you let your server know that you do not eat any of the items they may ask which one you might like to have an extra portion of.

that's good to know! so excited to finally experience AKL! was always a dream of ours, on our last trip in 08 my DH said we could stay on our next trip...unfortunately he won't be with us, but we know he'll be happy that we are finally getting to stay there!! so it will be a bitter sweet part of our trip.

Oh Lisa, I just realized for the first time that your DH must have died during the Haiti earthquake. I am so very sorry for your loss. :grouphug: May you and your little princess: have a truly blessed time at WDW, staying at your dream resort. Do try to plan to be around some in the middle of the day when the savannahs are filled with animals.

thank you so much Kathy, I actually added the Haiti part just recently since quite a few people asked if that's what happend, he was in the Hotel Montana on a biz trip, only was in Haiti for 3 hours when the quake hit.....I feel the more I keep Haiti in people minds, the more help will continue to go help the people of Haiti!
we are doing okay, know the next couple of days will be hard, but will be celebrating our memories with family and friends.

Our plans for AKL will be to stay at the resort for one full day, doing all the activities, swim and the safari with Jiko.

We want to wish all our AKL family and wonderful Merry Christmas! hope its filled with family, friends, love and happiness!!

Ok, so I have read most of this thread :faint: this afternoon. I just want to verify. If we have a DVC 2 bedroom value in Jambo, a savannah view is possible? Can I request this? Will we have a balcony no matter what view we have?

Also for the master bathroom, there is no whirlpool, just a regular tub/shower combo?

Lisa, were you expecting to be able to take your daughter on the Wanyama Safari? It is intended for ages 8 and up. I don't know if they make exceptions. http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/wanyama-safari-resort-tour/ I know that the morning safari in Animal Kingdom is open to younger children. My TA's family loves the sunrise safari and she has young boys.

Once again, I wish you and everyone else on this thread who will be celebrating Christmas a very blessed day.

yes that's the safari, Megan will be turning 11 the day we arrive in WDW! we are also going to take the Wild Africa Tour in AK, so we are excited to be able to see so many animals up close!
Thanks for your Christmas wishes and blessing, same to you and your DH!

Hello everyone,

We are planning our second trip to WDW in October 2011. Our family is strongly leaning toward staying at AKL this time. We were at the Poly two years ago and loved the feeling of being transported to another place that it created. We feel that AKL will provide a similar experience and are in love with the theme and the fact that we'll get to see animals from our room (we are planning on staying CL).

My only concern is that most of the ADRs we are interested in for dinner are at Epcot. We tend to tour the parks from rope drop to about 3:30 or 4:00, then return to the resort and relax, heading back out to dinner at around 6:30. Will it be a huge pain to get from AKL to Epcot in the evening? We will have a rental car. Would we be better of staying at BC because of the location? It's a beautiful resort, but the idea of staying there just doesn't excite us as much as AKL.

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated :)

We have stayed at AKL and AKV a few times and try to visit WDW for F&W. We have never had a problem getting to EPCOT or other WDW places for our ADRs. EPCOT is a bit easier than say going to California Grill. Just hope a bus to EPCOT from AKL.

We sometimes drive to our ADRs if they are at a resort but if the ADR is at a park we just take the bus since it is easier.

The nice thing about EPCOT is that there are bathrooms near the bus stops unlike the other parks. :thumbsup2:rotfl:

Later,
Dan

If your ADR's include any of the EPCOT area resorts such as the Flying Fish Cafe (a favorite of ours) your quickest way back to AKL would be to walk or take the boat to DHS (if it is still running - check DHS closing time) and then catch the bus to AKL. This is quicker than walking all the way through EPCOT after dinner.

Just thought I would check again :)

I have no idea about the view, but you can request it and see what they say!

All of the rooms I have had there, (4 now) always a tub/shower, never a whirlpool.

I'm looking for some info about Kidani... can anyone tell me about their experiences with the shuttle that runs to Jambo and back? Also can you tell me about mug refilling at Kidani and also if they have snacks or anything there? I know there is a sitdown restaurant so I'm just looking for info about other food and drink options. Maybe at the pool area??

Thanks!!! :goodvibes

While we were at Jambo we went downstairs to use the shuttle over to Kidani, so we went out front and talked to the CM right at the doors, he called over and said it was on its way and that we had to stand right here and we were the only ones on the shuttle.... Well when it arrived it was a golf cart that held 4 people and people ran to it as soon as it arrived, needless to say we were not on it. So we walked over.... it is not a long walk or difficult in anyway. We decided to walk back also, since it was not far.

I did hear someone say that they sometimes have a van that will pick you up, but for the week we were there it was a golf cart.

Interesting.... i was reading on page 1 that you can take any bus to any park and it will stop at Kidani after Jambo... is that correct?
