The 'Alex WISH Challenge'

This is one time I'm not at all envious of our Atkins friends!!!

Sending lots of willpower to all of you who accepted this challenge!:sunny:

Do NOT count me in!! ;) LOL I switched from Carb Addicts to my own low-fat plan, and I can't imagine giving up my carbs again! But, best of luck to all of you brave souls!! :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I want to put in a word of caution here. Please be very careful with cutting out all your carbs! Dr. Atkins was insistent that everybody get 20 carbs a day during Induction in the form of salad and other veggies. After Induction, during OWL, he said to slowly raise up the amount of carbs you are eating, in the form of healthy foods (veggies, nuts, fruit, etc) but still eat a low enough amount of carbs to lose weight.

If you cut out carbs completely, you may experience some side effects, including but not limited to: headaches, sluggishness, constipation, and worse of all - it could put you in a stall because your body just won't know what to do!

Alex - I'm not trying to talk people out of accepting your challenge - I just want people to know that carbs (healthy ones) are an important part of this diet. People need to know that they should eat veggies and other healthy carbs to keep losing weight. I'm sure a week won't kill anybody - but it wouldn't be good long-term.

We've worked long and hard over the last few years to give Atkins a good name. I wouldn't want people to read this challenge and go out & tell everybody that the Atkins diet means that you can't have any carbs.

Oh - and I agree with you about the Atkins bars and other "legal" treats. When I've had them I've stopped losing. You're right about needing to stick to the original diet, keep the carbs healthy. Stay away from the SF chocolate as much as you can, and you'll notice a difference!

Just MHO..... :)

Sorry I am not on Atkins so I can't accept this challenge but I will offer my encouragement and support for the ones that have accepted this challenge.

We know you guys can do it. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Couple of points Rhonda...
the original Atkins diet did call for 0 carbs and it worked for years. It actually was changed when he was trying to get it to be more "popular"
It worked just fine :)
It is almost impossible to eat 0 carbs anyway, eggs, cheese etc all contain at least a little bit.
I certainly wouldn't reccomend anyone keeps this up for more than a couple of weeks (although I have done it for 3 months at a shot).
In his book (chapter 18, page 237 of the one I have) he actually reccomends trying a zero carb for a bit for people who aren't losing at 20.
I don't see where he was "insistent" on the 20 grams of carbs.
He usually says "up to" the 20 grams.
I think everyone realizes this is the boot camp of Atkins.

Day one down -- I did it and I actually feel really good! I'm looking forward to having my treat for the evening though ---- diet A&W with a splash of heavy cream (While I'm watching American Idol).
:D

I don't know if I can go zero - but most days I end up at about 10g or so - most coming from a nice green salad that I love.

Following the plan rules to the letter really really works :teeth:

I am back on track and after only a few days I already feel so much more energetic!!

Good luck going carb free gang!

Well, I made it (Yes, Kath!! lol). I have to admit I was ready to quit about noon and told Kath so. But, I made it through day one, enjoying a bottle of water right now

I'm also, not liking Alex too much at this minute. Hoping that will change by the end of 7 days. :p

the first 48 hours are the hardest... you are half way there... by thursday you won't want to eat :)

Way to go everyone, day 1 is done! I am not on Atkins, but support you in your choice. Cheering you on to victory!!!

Alex - I don't think he added carbs because he wanted to be "popular". I think he added the carbs, in the form of vegetables, because he realized that it would be healthier! People needed fiber in their diets (for obvious reasons) as well as vitamins that you can only get from some veggies.

Yes, this diet did start out in the beginning as zero carbs - but it wasn't healthy, and it does work much better and faster if you are healthier! If you don't get any carbs, your body will "fight back" because it thinks you're starving, and you will stall.

And, yes, cutting out carbs for a few days is one way to jumpstart things again if you're stalling, but people shouldn't plan on eating that way forever.

One week isn't going to hurt anybody - I just didn't want people think that this was a way to diet forever! The Atkins diet is definitely a WOL, and you can't follow that without ever eating carbs again!

(she said, as respectfully as possible) ;)

I'M IN!!!

Only because I have been stagnant lately. Also, I really think the Mock Danish, Atkins bars etc. give me the urge to cheat easier.

I began induction again yesterday.........only counted approx. 10 carbs in all for the day...........and 2-3 was in the Mock Danish!!!

I'll put my best foot forward for Alex's Challenge.............here goes!!

I'll do this Alex...I've only had tuna and mayo this morning so I'm right on track. Are we starting today, Wednesday?
On the induction diet it says to eat a small salad everday...is this allowed? I hope so, because that's what I usually eat for lunch or I'm going to be eating fish, cheese and eggs 3X a day because I don't eat any red meat, or poultry.

How did you think up this challenge Alex? It's brilliant, I love it!

You are on Atkins without eating any red meat or poultry???? That's mind boggling....

It sure is Alex, it's a vegeterian version of Atkins. We can still lose weight and find plenty to eat that is allowed.
My question is on the Alex challenge are we allowed our small salad like during the induction phase?
I eat plenty of seafood, but I like to put it over lettuce.

LynnCC, please don't try this. What would you eat? We aren't eating our veggies or salad just for one week.

Please don't do this, I don't want you to get ill.

well there's no reason she would get ill Katholyn...just bored to tears...hmmmm
Ok having thought about it.....
I am assuming you are eating a LOT of eggs and cheese...which mean that since they do have a tad bit of carbs you are a little behind the curve before you start.
Technically no..no salad on the Alex wish challenge but you have to do what you have to do...
I won't claim to be an expert on vegitarian Atkins, my thing has always been brutal Atkins..bacon and beef :)

Ok, todays meals....24 ounces of caffeine free diet coke with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. 9 ounces of hamburger and 2 slices of cheese....
