I saw your info. regarding college applications over on SleepingBooty's thread, but I thought I'd congratulate you here. That's great! It's difficult going to school and having a family, but it can be done. I wish you the best. :goodvibes

I am going to try to get a bit of an announcement up tonight about my exciting news. I have very mixed feelings, and will try to spell out what I'm thinking after a school play tonight. Thanks, Glenn!! It really means a lot to me to be supported here!! :yay:

Humm, very interesting! I'll be waiting to hear all the details! :surfweb: :goodvibes

Well, as some of you have already seen, I have some big news. After much soul-searching, and a long hard look at our financial situation, I have decided that I really need to go back to school and get a skill that I can use- especially now that the kids are older and can spend a bit more time without me.

I have always wanted to try my hand in the medical fields, but I ran like a crying baby in my first week of chemistry. I have always regretted that. In the last 25 years, I have done some growing up, and have gained a boatload of self-confidence and a fair amount of maturity (in most areas), and it's time to give it a second chance.

So, by taking baby steps, one class at a time, I have set my sights on an RN degree. The program itself is a 2 year one, giving me an A.A.S, not a bachelor's, but as long as I am marketable in the end, that does not matter so much- really, my goal is to help contribute to the family's monthly needs and earn enough extra to get myself and the kids to WDW once every couple of years, or to make home improvements if needed. In that order, of course. ;)

They are telling me that I need to re-take Idiot Math, even though I've had college algebra and a stats, and one other, but hey, whatever. That is probably wise, since it will help me pass the chem that I know is coming. I hope to start this coming term which means on March 15th, I'll officially be a student again.

It is a big step, and I am at the same time, both scared and excited. All told, it should take me at least 3 1/2 years to get through it all- on top of the math and chem, I also need a Life Span Psych class, 3 terms of A&P, and microbiology class. So to even apply to the Nursing Program, it will be a year and half!! That's a heap of a time committment! But I have to look at it as one class at a time.

Wish me luck!!

Wow that is big news Liesa! Congrats on moving forward with new confidence! :cheer2:

Thanks, Tammie!! The very obvious bad news of this step forward is that I won't be going to any MNSHHP's in the next many years, and by the time I"m all done, and can afford to go, they will have probably ditched it. And even if I can afford to get to WDW anytime soon, it will have to be only during the stupid busy seasons of school breaks. I know a lot of folks do that, but going during the slow season now has me very spoiled.

It'll be a big time and money commitment, but you can do it! It will be good for your kids to see you setting a goal and achieving it, and doing schoolwork like they have to do.

Liesa,

Congrats on making your descision! You have made a wise choice! There is such a shortage of nurses out there! Please make sure to look into scholarships and grants specifically geared toward nursing. Do you plan on working while going to school? I would look at becoming a Nursing Assistant in a hospital chances are they may have some kind of program to help you get your nursing degree... I know the hopital I work in has a program like this, my neighbors daughter got into their NA program was able to work and go to school and the hopital was very willing to schedule her work around her schooling. Something to think about.... Good Luck! :goodvibes

Congratulations on your decision Liessa !!! I wish you all the luck in the world especially with chemistry:scared1:

What a huge announcement! I am so happy for you!:cool1::cool1:

Someday I'd like to go back and 'finish' what I've started.

I know you will make an excellent RN.. and if you have any questions let me know! (I am not a RN but Melody is and I will direct all questions to her and I promise not to make up an answer myself;))
:lmao:

Wow, Liesa, that is impressive news!! I am sure it will bring a lot of change to your life as well as to your family and I hope that you will all be able to adjust to the new circumstances! I think you are doing a wonderful thing and I am sure you will be a fantastic nurse once you have completed your journey! I wish you all the best for it! And that MNSSHP will be around for years and years to come so that you can have a fantastic graduation celebration during a MNSSHP one day in the future! :goodvibes

Anatomy & Physiology

That's a bear of a class, but just keep swimming. :fish:

T minus 10 pages. I have to pay attention not to miss the transition to a new thread.

OH Liesa!!!

That is AWESOME!

Surely there is some sort of "intern" program that you can cite and come to Disney with Lauren at some point as her nurse. ;)

You will be a GREAT nurse!

You are right...all you need is to have that 2 yr degree and you will be off to the races. We can't find enough nurses! This will be great!

Congrats on moving forward with your education!! You will be a great nurse!

Congrats! That is a huge decision and I'm sure it is the right one for you and your family. Good luck!

Oh Liesa:goodvibes! What wonderful news for you and your family! A career in nursing sounds like a perfect fit for you too. In my family alone, there are 5 nurses including my own mother. DH jokes that I'll most likely go back to school after my girls are grown and become a nurse as well. What I'd really like is to work postpartum with all those babies! I love babies.:goodvibes

Oh boy, chemistry scares me! I barely passed by the skin of my teeth in high school and didn't even bother pursuing it in college. Kudos to you for tackling it, I'm sure your determination will push you through. And re-taking idiot math isn't such a bad idea, as you said it will refresh you for the difficult math that is coming! Love your order of priorities too...helping with the family income and getting to Disney every year!

So, you're starting March 15th then, how exciting!!! Just view it one step at a time, knowing that each class gets you that much closer to your goal. I'm wishing you all the best in the world with this endeavor Liesa. Congratulations and best wishes as you begin.

Liesa, how's that right upper quadrant?

Although I haven't had any more "attacks" of severe pain, there is a persistant sore spot there, that is bad enough to wake me up at night. The hydascan showed that my gallbladder is perfectly healthy, so there must be something else going on. I am trying some Prilosec to rule out an ulcer, but she also mentioned the possibility of a blocked colon. ( I knew I shouldn't have given up brocolli) I was referred to a GI, but when they called yesterday, they told me they were Out of Network, so I'll have to pursue finding another one- perhaps in Portland. I dunno- it's frustrating. If it had been the GB, it would have been such an easy fix!

Wicked is coming to Eugene at the Hult Center (www.hultcenter.org) from April 20-May 1! :) That's just a mere hour south of you!

WHOA!!!! A new poster!! :welcome:!!!!!!!!! And not just ANY new poster; one from the great State of Oregon. And if I'm a mere hour north of Eugene, that means YOU are a mere hour SOUTH of Salem- which means, you should think about coming to our MEET on April 1st!!!! I'll PM you my contact info :)

Thanks for the heads up on WICKED! I will definitely look into that!

I don't mind copycats at all! Thanks, Pat! It will be a long slog, but one I am pretty excited about!

Humm, very interesting! I'll be waiting to hear all the details! :surfweb: :goodvibes

Hope you like waht you saw! :goodvibes

I hope I can find some financial aid! That is the next step I need to take, for sure! I guess I'll start with the dreaded FAFSA.

I hope I can still manage to run the home and keep on top of all that that requires. It will be good for th kids to see mom studying too- you're right!

Liesa,

THANKS, Wendy!! My dad, who was an anesthesiologist, is encouraging me to start with the RN, then make a go for nurse anesthestist. THAT sounds like a large chunk of change to me- both literally and figuratively. We'll see!

This program is unique in that they allow you to take the LPN boards after the first year and begin to work while taking the 2nd year of courses toward the RN. I will definitely think about a work/study internship or such to help me out!

Congratulations on your decision Liessa !!! I wish you all the luck in the world especially with chemistry:scared1:

Frankly, rosie, I am VERY nervous about the chem. I picture myself in the study lab/tutoring center A LOT!!!

What a huge announcement! I am so happy for you!:cool1::cool1:

Thanks, TIM!! I will definitely keep Mel in mind as a go-to!

And for the record, I'd love to see any and all "made up" answers. Those, I imagine might be VERY entertaining, indeed! :lmao:
