The 5 Biggest Needs at Walt Disney World

First, I think this is a great thread with a lot of great ideas.

My top 5 (at least as of this minute ;) ) are:

1) More things for adults. Some of my fondest memories are at PI and the Adventurers Club specifically. I know they do the Food and Wine Festival each year so what about even having a Disney Winery ... they could do tours and have wine pairing dinners or just a nice place for adults to go for pre-dinner/post-dinner. Plus they could sell the wine - how many people would buy a bottle or six of Disney wine to bring home and show people? They have this at California Adventure. We are not wine people but it looked very interesting and nice, however it was under a major refurb while we were there.

2) At the opposite end of the spectrum is that I think they need more things for the under-5 set. When we were there I think my daughters (8 months at the time) favorite thing were the little water spurt areas. They could add a lot to HS based on the Disney Clubhouse shows. I know they have the one show, but what about a leaky plumbing area that spurts water and has Handy Manny's tools trying to fix it? Or an Ooh and Ah jungle gym area> California Adventure has a fantastic play area called Brother Bear. This would be a great addition to DHS or AK. Our DS9&4 loved it, it is really impressive.

3) I think the new Epic Mickey video game is going to be huge and a real opportunity to do something in the parks around the Mouse that started it all. Maybe even a TSM type ride based in the video game world - or kinda flip things around and turn a video game into a animatronic type ride to put you into the game that way

4) It has been mentioned but to get something in the unused buidling in EPCOT. Perhaps that is where the winery could be or just partner up with companies that want to be progressive and eco-friendly and promote themselves. I think the unused building should be turned into major attractions, further anchoring Epcot as the #2 park.

5) I'd like to see more rides that are inspired by the source material and not just retell the story. The Nemo ride and the in-progress Little Mermaid ride seem to just tell the story that everyone knows. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd like something new. I think the mentioned trillish ride based on the door scene in Mosters Inc would be a great example of that. Yes, a Monster's thrill ride would be awesome in my book :thumbsup2
.

Outside the parks, where people choose to stay is their business. But in the parks, everyone gets the same opportunities as everyone else. So there's a reason there Deluxe guests don't get special FastPass privileges.
I have to agree with you here.I would never want guests at deluxes to have a one up in the parks over the mods or values.I have stayed at all levels and would cringe if they did this. The advantage of deluxes is obvious you don't need to pile more on!

I'm in agreement with you both! :thumbsup2

Here's a little glimpse into what goes into creating an attraction(s) at a Disney Park and why it's easier said than done building a new attraction. So next time you think Disney should put something in that empty lot or make use of that unused building, odds are they are probably planning to. (Disney hates eye sores and untapped resources) it just takes a lot of time and planning to do so because, well, Disney knows there's haters out there. So they need to plan and revise 'til they're blue in the face so they can avoid any complaints from certain guests *cough* Mission: Space itself from conception to opening took a whopping FIVE years! Plus Disney only has so much talent and resources. I think they'd rather concentrate on a few projects at a time and keep the quality high than many projects and have them be sub-par.

Take a gander.

If Disney ever offers something extra in the parks for only onsite guests or even worse only those who stay at deluxes, I for one won't go any more. Front of the Line works well at Universal because you're talking about a relatively small number of guests. There are way too many onsite guests at WDW and doing something similar would make a visit awful for those who have to stay offsite. Also, locals would have a rough time just visiting the parks.

I like to stay onsite but can't always do so for many reasons. So far Disney welcomes our themepark dollars too.

I've suggested this in a survey and will shout it to anyone who will listen. Get rid of the paper towel dispensers and use blowers in all parks. So much cleaner and better for the environment. Disney could be a great example to other large parks. Just returned today from a week at WDW and bathrooms were not really cleaned often. Disappointing. Agree that Jungle Cruise needs a rehab ASAP. They've got the jungle, the boats, but it could be so much more. Why spend so much money on fireworks? I don't get it. Instead, use all those thousands of dollars keeping the parks clean and sprucing up the hotels/attractions. We go once a year to WDW and feel that these observations are pretty accurate. We felt that the people mover could also be expanded to the entire park. What a great way to relax and see the park from that perspective! Expanding the monorail is also a great idea. CBR was a nice choice for us as a last minute trip, but it's definitely an older hotel. Pools were kept very clean and food court was clean too.

I wouldn't be thrilled about the paper towels not being available. I use paper towels to turn off faucets and open the door to exit the restroom. I've rarely seen a really messy restroom at WDW other than just after a parade, show, etc. before the CM's have a chance to take care of them.

I'm glad to see there are a few people on this thread with some semblance of logic and compassion.

Everytime we go to MK and wait in line for Tommorrowland Speedway, I remark to DH that Disney really needs to retheme this. It should be based on CARs (Radiator Springs would be cool!) and that all the cars should be solar (it's Florida - lots of sunshine) with electric backup batteries. That ride wastes so much gas, I think a change would fit in with Walt's vision of Tommorrow.

My own Post of a Million Dreams:
Your mileage may vary.

MK - Tomorrow Land: I'm going to agree with the concept of going 50's retro here. Scrap Stitch, move Buzz to DHS (I'll talk about that in a moment), move Monsters Inc to DHS (or better yet, create that ride that should have been made from the doors scene.) I don't really think COP belongs here - but I can't really seem to bring myself to condone getting rid of it either. Maybe we could take COP back to it's original state that way we completely capture the nostalgia/Walt connection, and it lends it's self more to the idea of stepping into "the future that never was". Move the Racing cars over to DHS as well. The only thing I would keep in this area ride wise would be Space Mountain. Then add another coaster that captures the spirit of the original escape to witch mountain, I'll agree that this would be the right place to put Sci Fi Dine In.

MK - Adventure Land:

I don't know that I agree with making Aladdin a full out coaster ride but I think if we take it inside and combine a modern spin on old dark ride concepts, and pull the carpets along a track (maybe at coaster speeds, but with smaller dips and valleys.), and I think a new restaurant could work well here as well. Theme it to Neverland and at lunch have Peter and the Lost Boys character meet and greet, then do Tink and Faerie Friends at night.
A Pirates of the Carribian meal would not be a bad concept here either.

MK - Frontier Land: The only thing I can really think to add here is old fashioned gun fights by streetmosphere. (They do this at a place near where I live and it is a big hit with people of all ages.)

Ak: Make Rafeki's Conservation Station easier to find and reach. Add another show, sort of like Flights of Wonder - but using more animals in the act. Speaking of different merchandise in the parks, this would be a great place to sell those "adoption" kits where you pay like 20 bucks and sponser an animal out in the wilds. The money helps with scientific research, and the care of that animal, and in return you/your child receives monthly/quarterly reports on the animal that you have "Adopted".

Epcot - FW: First thing - get rid of the Future World Concept all together, the same issues that rise with tomorrow land and keeping it truly "futuristic" apply here as well. I'm thinking more a land of exploration theme.

Separate it out into 6 separate pavilions: Land, Sea, Space, the human body & the Mind

We already have the Land and the Sea

Space could include Mission Space, perhaps a small museum detailing the history of space travel, a small theater where you could watch the launches at Port Canaveral on the days when they occur, possibly even one of those large telescope like they have at conservatory and a shop where you could buy things like real star dust (we saw it at a conservatory once), and other space rocks, star charts, astronautic ice cream etc.

The human body was apparently covered once upon a time in Epcot so all we would really need to do is update and then bring that back into flow.

The mind could include the Imagination Pavilion, but also something that talks about how we learn, and the tricks that the mind can play on us (like why is it that if you ask 6 people who witnessed a crime, you get six slightly different takes on what happened?)

As for World Showcase? Before we start adding countries to that I would like to see them fix what they already have. They need at least one act for each country, unique (as in strip out every sign of Disney merchandise from this area of the park.) merchandise, I really don't see the point in adding rides to this part of the park (I know an unpopular opinion) because I really think it would mess up the theming of this section... if someone could come up with a ride that didn't just feel like "Gee somebody thought we needed rides back here so we just kinda shoved em in" I could live with that.
But my vote for first country to get added? Someplace in Africa, maybe Egypt?
I would also really really like to see a parade similar to Tapestries returned here.

Now for the one that really needs help on a massive scale: MGM

Divide the park into

Old Hollywood: Showcasing the original concept for the park (the Hollywood that never was), rides like the Great Movie Ride, lots of streetmosphere, the Brown Derby, those who hate the bricks at Epcot will hate this - but a Hollywood Walk of Fame where you can purchase your own star and become a legend in your own mind.

Pixar Land: Where all those rides I mentioned moving from Tomorrow Land can come to live. Re-theme the racing cars with the cars overlay and it slides right in. Lots of meet and greets with the Pixar characters (and this be the only place in the parks you can meet them... but then I think that should be done with pretty much everything but the fab "5", by limiting the locations where characters appear you open up to allow in a larger variety of characters and you make that section of the park more of a must do in order to meet these beloved friends.) I also think it would be neat if we could watch the animators work on the newest Pixar movies from here.

Disney Channel Live: Where (as someone mentioned before) one or two of the Disney Channel shows will be taped live, the Disney channel characters (like Kim Possible & Ron Stopable) can do appearances. High School Musical would also find it's home here.

One Man's Dream: Here we place attractions related to classic Disney Animation all the way up to The Frog Princess. Keep animation studios here (esp with the art classes), Make the One Man's Dream attraction the center piece and include a theater that constantly shows the really, really old black & white cartoons from Walt's day.

Now - Moving on I think it's time for a 5th gate.
One that would revolve around thrill rides and the villains. (If not this then they need their own section at DHS which could include TOT and a re-themed RNRC) This park would appeal to the Universal/teen crowd.

It would also be a good place to highlight works such as the new Alice in Wonderland and Nightmare before Christmas.

As for the resorts? I would like to see the Boardwalk built back up and more of the old entertainment added back. I think AKL needs some kind of special/interesting transport to AK seeing as how it is the only Deluxe that is completely stuck being bus transport. (Unless I'm wrong about this in which case - yay!)

For adult nightlife - I would like to see the return of PI but not without a real eye to themeing and story.

Anyway - that was fun. :cloud9:
As I said at the start, this is my dream - my if I could run the parks, had all the money in the world dream. I don't know how viable any of it is, I know that there are plenty of folks out there who will disagree with a lot of, if not everything I said... and that's ok. I just didn't want to miss this chance to play armchair imagineer.

I wish we could live YOUR dream! :thumbsup2

My DD3 is deathly afraid of hand dryers in restrooms. I need to go on recon missions before we go out sometimes. Therapy is expensive, so for my daughter's sake I vote for towels.

And I vote for an end to "Nescapoop" too. Last time I brought my own Starbucks Iced Via. It wasn't wonderful, but it was better than that slurry.

My nephew enjoyed the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground more than just about any of the rides at DHS. I could see where kids (and parents) would enjoy something like that at MK also.

What about something to do with Alice in Wonderland? Maybe a slide into a tunnel where you suddenly feel small and then another where you feel giant? Definite potential for a play area for MK!

So Many great ideas on this thread!!

My top 5 improvement wishes would be very similar to what has been said:

1. Add some attractions to DHS. I love the park, including the Streets of America, but there wasn't much we were able to take my DS on (he was 2 at the time). Also -- update the characters at the character breakfast there -- Jojo's circus hasn't been on in a while, and there was no place to meet the current Playhouse Disney crew like Oso, or Ooh and Aah. Maybe they could add a play area based on the Imagination Movers Warehouse with different themed "rooms"? I'm not for changing the restaurants - at least not Prime Time orSci Fi (my faves!!). Star Wars would be fine... What about something with Mickey Mouse's clubhouse, since they are losing the country homes at MK?

2. More character meals that are not princesses or Fairies. Pirates - cool, and someone else mentioned a hero meal, which would be great. Pixar would also be welcome - especially Toy Story.

3. Some kind of internal transportation within AK. When I go to Disney, I expect to walk, but that park just seems especially brutal -- everything is so spaced out, and it feels much more exposed than the other parks. I'd also like to see the Dino-Land replaced with something better, and a few of the shows replaced with a ride or two. Maybe something with Dinosaurs that doesn't scare the pants off of you...

4. Love the idea of expanding the monorail in any direction or way. I really like the idea of all the parks being connected via monorail.... but I don't know if that's possible/practical. In the meantime, a cheap solution is to get a few more buses going. For example - I loved our stay at the POFQ, but when we had to share the bus with POR, it was annoying (added almost 15 minutes to the ride!!) And really, there were enough of us on the bus to begin with to justify running it just from the one hotel. Everyone else after us had to stand. Very uncomfortable.

5. More fast passes for popular attractions. I love using fast passes, and I think they are a great system - just add them for more rides.

Overall though, I love Disney. I love being there, so much that sometimes it makes me cry, and I can't wait to go back and see the new stuff they have been working to add. :)

I have always wanted an Alice In Wonderland ride/or section!!! I also love the idea of a Peter Pan themed character meal!!! In fact an entire Neverland themed area would be great!!

a Pixar land in DHs would be so fantastic.

I'm so hoping that we can visit Universal next year to see WWOHP, but I really want the large crowds to die down slightly..............if that is at all possible.

1) I would say finish Pop Century, but I know that will be the Art of Animation resort, so that's taken care of.

2) Bring back the old TTA narrative.

3) Do something with the River Country water park area, I saw pictures of it about a year ago, and it's just a waste of space.

4) Do the Beastly Kingdom section of AK that was always rumored, I think it would be cool.

5) Do villians / Pixar / fairies character meals.

I agree with all of this. The only thing I might add would be a Cars themed land to HWS. Or really any themed area from one of their many, many cool movies. Star Wars would even be ok if they make it a destination for fans and non-fans alike. I could care less about SW, but if you put in a few cool attractions and some good eats, I'd check it out. Also, with wildly popular Toy Story Mania, I can't believe we aren't seeing more TS related rides and attractions. Talk about a money maker.

And a fairies character meal would be awesome. Just think of the beautiful setting that could be created:lovestruc Same goes for a Pirates themed area....a cool Flying Dutchman ride on it's own little island, a pirates character meal. Again, the POTC movies are so popular why are they NOT included more in the parks?:confused3

I agree that a nighttime show at AK would be cool but not a must and I think that anything with loud fireworks every night would likely be deemed inappropriate for all of the animals.

The biggest mistake recently was closing Pleasure Island including the very unique Adventurer's Club. I cannot imagine what they were thinking with the decision to add more t-shirt shops and a couple of restaurants in place of an area that used to be different and fun for adults to go at night. They should bring back Adventurers and at least one other club, IMO.

The biggest need is Hollywood Studios. The Tower of Terror and Rock N Rollercoaster are fantastic attractions, but beyond that and Toy Story the whole place needs a refurb. The shows are ancient and not that great other than Fantasmic. We happily skipped DHS during our last couple of trips. We have the T of T, Fantasmic and Toy Story in California with far less wait time, so nothing else drawing us there.

I think Disney needs a new park altogether. Keep things fresh.

This was posted at the Disney Blog and I thought it might be fun to discuss here.

http://thedisneyblog.com/2010/07/05/the-five-biggest-needs-at-walt-disney-world/

With all the new DVC Resorts, what does WDW need to do?

A few weeks ago during a quarterly results call Disney CEO Bob Iger seemed to imply that once the Magic Kingdom’s new Fantasyland is done and California Adventure’s remake is complete that will be the end of major projects for the parks, at least for a while. I’m not sure he’s taking into account the long list of work that needs to be done.

The list of small projects that could make a trip to Walt Disney World better for the guest is nearly endless. It ranges from little things that could be done better (parking guests at the back of the parking lot when whole sections closer to the gate are still open, bringing back the Country Bear Holiday Show) to large projects (building that bowling alley at ESPN WWOS, a new country or two at EPCOT). But I wanted to focus on the largest needs, those that would make the biggest difference in guest experience.

Am I missing any big needs? What else would you like to see on this list?

I think that Mr. Iger is sorely missing the mark if he thinks they should be done, even for a while. Walt said Disneyland will constantly be a work in progress...I assume that would extend to all parks now and forever...not just the international market which they seem so taken with as of late. There is no reason they can't bring the same innovation and wonder to the domestic parks that they do to DisneySea, Tokyo Disney and soon to Shanghai. That personally annoys me.

That said, here are five areas I would address:
DHS (seems to be a reoccuring theme on this thread!): First I would expand Pixar Place. Double Toy Story Mania. It is an easily changeable game as far as programming it for the future and the crowds have shown no signs of slowing down. Change the Honey I Shrunk the Kid Playground to A Bug's Life (Honey I Shrunk the kids needs to be expelled from the parks completely, that movie series is 20 years old). Update the Muppet Movie in 3D or 4D and expand the Muppet's presents in the park. Add another 2 family rides. It will help disperse the crowds in this park a bit more. As much as I enjoyed the Lights Motor Speed Show, there really only needs to be one stunt show in the park. So utilize that space better, and update the Indiana Jones show to something else. Do a Star Wars Stunt show, and include the computer graphics, green screens and real stunts. It would help update it hugely while still being entertaining. Just turn the Narnia space into a character meet and greet!! Or maybe a small Mickey Mouse Club House or something...something relevant please! Update the character breakfast for the love of gawd ( I've never bet) thats just lazy.

AK- I don't care about the hours so much as I do about the Dinoland area, and perhaps Beastly Kingdom. Remove Hester and Chester ( everyone has gotten the joke and how kitchy it is...so move on!!) Put in a Herpiterium (reptiles and amphibians) display! That sort of bridges the gap between dinosaurs and now! I think that and maybe a display about the wetlands and or an aquarium of their own would help add to the number of species that Animal Kingdom homes but also provides education about as well! I think this park needs another 2 family friendly rides. One maybe about regular animals and one about mystical creatures. I think it will be awhile before they introduce anymore major construction into this park due to disturbance of animals. And if you think about it, whether its a full day or a half day park from the business end anyway, they are still getting a full days admission or are keeping you on property longer..

In general I think WDW needs to keep working on nonmovie themed attractions to add. Because those can be the longest lasting! Test Track, Mission Space, Soarin'...all great non movie themed rides...will last forever longer than Stitch or Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor (granted those are just glorified shows...but still) A new country in Epcot would go sooo far for new and repeat visitors! Not to mention food and wine festival or garden festival!!

Figure out a clear plan for character visits- because its marketing they can control. They can create interest in characters by increasing their appearance and story (Duffy Bear is a perfect example of this...especially since there was no movie to back this up at all! It was just a story they spewed and people ate it up!!)

Quit putting everything in the cookie cutter mold: merchandise, food, drinks. Some may say this panders too much to return visitors- so what? Isn't the best thing in teh world they can do, is turn a 1st time visitor into a 2nd and 3rd time visitor?!! So take the time and resources to make different resort merchandise (especially since you are tieing so many resources up into DVC), provide different quality meals and drinks to fit into the atmosphere you are world-renowned for creating! And you will wow first time visitors and create new 2nd and 3rd time visitors!

thats my 2 cents.
