The 2010 World Cup Thread / South Africa

Does anyone know the opening time of the ESPN bar at the Boardwalk. We are hoping to see the England v Slovenia Match on Wednesday, but not sure if they will be open in the morning?

I know that in 2006, they opened up early to accommodate the games. I wouldn't be surprised if they are doing that this time around.

Coming in a little late on the US game. There is a bit of a silver lining in all this. I've never seen so much press coverage for a soccer match. Most of the newspapers in NYC had the story as front page news, plus ESPN reported incredible numbers for the game.

For the Algeria game, FIFA has chosen a Belgium ref, who has a reputation for being one of the top refs. He refed the 2008 European Championship final.

FIFA has assigned Belgian referee Frank De Bleeckere to officiate
the Americans' critical Group C match against Algeria on June 23.

Bleeckere is considered to be a highly experienced and respected
referee, and he officiated in Argentina's 4-1 victory over South Korea
earlier in the tournament. He has also been the referee for big
matches at the club level, including a Barcelona-Chelsea Champions
League game in 2006.

I LOVE the mini "ceremony" and sportsmanship between the teams before each game. What do they exchaange, it looks like their countries flags??

Anyway, the game is starting, GO SPAIN!

Living in Johannesburg, we feel very lucky to be fully immersed in the World Cup experience. We are rooting for South Africa of course, and for all the other African countries - we would love to see at least one of them do well! We are also rooting for Italy (we are of Italian descent)

All South Africans are so exited, and the atmosphere here is fantastic. There are so many fans visiting from all over the world, many from the US!

As I am currently on maternity leave, I have signed up to work as a volunteer for FIFA, and have been assigned to "language support" - which is fascinating, as we are working with all the departments (protocol, media, information services, spectator services at Soccer City, among other things).

There are quite a lot of volunteers who have come from other countries (Italy, US, Germany, Brazil, Morocco, Cote d'Ivoire...), and who will be in South Africa for the whole month to help. Some of them volunteer for every world cup, and there is even one Dutch gentleman who has already worked as a volunteer for the 6 previous world cups!

I watched the match in Soccer City last night - Brazil/Cote d'Ivoire, and I must say that the sound from the Vuvuzelas (trumpets) was not so bad - it sounds worse on TV... Although there were so many Brazilian fans at the stadium, there was a lot of support for Cote d'Ivoire from all the others, including South Africans... Sadly, they still lost...

Back after a couple of days off watching the meltdown at the US Open...what a blowout by Portugal of his dear leader's team, North Korea. Team PRK just gave up.

Yeah, it would have been better to not have received any goals. But the point is that it was a great comeback, scored 3 legit goals, and it should have been a clear and clean victory of 3-2 . The US deserved its 3 points.

I 100% agree.......:thumbsup2

And France???

Ouch:headache::headache:

OMG! I don't have any nails left and there are tufts of hair all around me but we are thru to the Knockout round and won the group!!

FIFA really, really has to do something about the officiating, it is abominable.

Great win in extra time by Team USA to top group C.

We get to find out around 4:30 pm EDT to see who the runner up in Group D, the next team to play the USA in the sweet 16 knockout stage.

How do you watch this on TV? I can't stand it - sounds like im in a bee hive!!! I tried to watch last week & those vuvuzelas are annoying!!!
