The 2010 Baltic Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

I've looked thru all the St. Petersburg tours and think that only one of Disney's actually goes into the Spilled Blood Cathedral. Is this correct? The Cathedral and boat ride?

Going into this church is what I REALLY have to do.

Also read if you go see the Amber Room there are NO photos allowed...true or not true?

The inside of the cathedral is spectacular. We were there during a service and it was interesting to see how the service was conducted in a separate chapel off the main one and everyone stands up during the service.

Correct, no pics are allowed in the amber room. I wasn't going to get caught taking a pic. in there. They had someone stationed in the room to make sure pics were not taken.

Gonna check and see about the times for St. Petersburg. I would imagine the 3-4 hour tours are the first day. That means back on the ship by 4:30 or so. Then what? Can't get off the ship again unless I have a visa. So I'm kind of hoping for back to back short tours. If it doesn't get dark until late I'd guess that's a possibility.

Reading through the small print of the DCL shore trips there are 'clues' to times etc.For example as expected the evening ballet trip has a warning you will miss dinner and you are best to eat before on the deck 9 snack outlets.

None of the normal day sightseeing trips have this warning, so I expect they will be back for dinner.

I would guess actually dinner that night will be delayed, the same as Berlin night. In the Med for Rome day, dinner was 7pm and 9pm. For the majority of people unless you book an evening tour either DCL or private, you will make the most of the afternoon, and therefore get back late afternoon evening. This is why I suspect dinner will be delayed, or even 'open' sitting.

I asked DCL for a dinner and entertainment and deck party schedule and the only nights 'to be confirmed' are the St Petes night. I suspect, that it now will be a film premier-ear that night as other wise people will be annoyed they miss something, or take the opportunity first night for 'local' entertainment to be brought on-board.

My private tour operator has asked us to bring a lunch box due to our late arrival.

As well as the Ballet, DCL has an evening canal trip, and you can book a local tour operator.

Can you share the dinner and entertainment guide that you received? Thanks!

A lot of people have asked re Dover, found this on the DCL website, generally good, will correct a few bits.

Corrections in red.

Maps and Driving Directions for Port of Dover

General Port Information
The Disney Magic will be berthed at Terminal 2 at the Port of Dover.

Traveling by Car
From the London Orbital M25 Motorway, exit at Junction 3 and follow the sign for M20/Channel Tunnel/ Dover. Continue along the road which, at Junction 1, will become the M20 motorway.
Travel along the M20; the motorway will eventually merge into the A20 after Ashford.
Follow the A20 into Dover.
At the first roundabout (Western Heights Roundabout), proceed straight and continue along the A20 to the next roundabout (Limekiln Roundabout).
At the Limekiln Roundabout, take the third exit and follow the signs for the Cruise Terminals.
Drive over the Viaduct bridge and cross the small roundabout where you will see the Welcome to Dover Cruise Terminal sign on the left.
Follow the road to the right and make your way to the security gate where personnel will direct you to Terminal 2.
Parking at the Port of Dover
Parking is available nearby the Dover Cruise Terminals. We recommend pre-booking your parking space because Dover Cruise Port cannot guarantee parking spots during the peak months of July, August and September for Guests who have not booked in advance. Parking is available at approximately £111/$177 per cruise. Prices are subject to change without notice. To book securely online, please visit http://sales.doverport.co.uk/.

Please note that at certain times during peak periods, additional car parking is available at Dover Harbour.

Using Public Transportation from London Gatwick International Airport
There is no direct rail service from London Gatwick to Dover Priory station. There are 2 options for travel by rail; both options involve at least one change. Please check local train schedules to confirm departure and arrival times.

From Gatwick Airport, take the Gatwick Express to London Victoria. This service currently departs every 15 minutes and the trip takes 30 minutes. Pricing from £17/$27 per adult, £8.50/$14 per child.

You can also use Southern services, they use the same 'fast' tracks all the way, and most trains only have one stop at Croydon. This is cheaper.

At Victoria Station, take the train to Dover Priory Station. Total travel time is approximately 2 hours, 45 minutes. Generally, this service operates on an hourly basis.

From Gatwick Airport, take the First Capital Connect train bound for Bedford. Upon arrival at London Bridge Station, exit the train, make your way to Waterloo East by taxi, and then take the train to Dover Priory Station.

This bit is 'wrong', 1/ If a train comes from Waterloo East, its next stop is London Bridge, so just change platforms at LB, 2/ If for some reaosn the Dover train didnt stop at London bridge, you wouldnt take a taxi to Waterloo East, just get off First Capital Connect, stay on same platform and the next train or so, would go to Waterloo east, and the ticket should cover you as its all London terminals.

Total travel time is approximately 2 hours, 45 minutes. Generally this service operates on an hourly basis.

Note; the trains to Dover, are often 8 cars long and split at Faversham, with 4 going to Dover, and 4 to Ramsgate ensure you are in the correct part, often the front 4.

At Dover Priory, take a taxi to Dover Cruise Terminal 2. The terminal is approximately 5 minutes from the station, subject to traffic conditions. Additionally, taxis are available from Gatwick International Airport at approximately £130/$210. Prices are subject to change without notice.

Using Public Transportation from London Heathrow International Airport
Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington Station. This service currently departs every 15 minutes; travel time is approximately 20 minutes. Pricing is approximately £17/$27 per adult, £8 /$14 per child.
On arrival in Paddington, transfer to London Waterloo East,(Why?) Charing Cross or Victoria Stations by taxi; once there, travel by train to Dover Priory Station.

* Also Picadilly tube line to Barons court, swap platform to other side for District line, then to Victoria, less escalators or no taxi.

At Dover Priory, take a taxi to Dover Cruise Terminal 2; the terminal is approximately 5 minutes from the station, subject to traffic conditions. Additionally, taxis are available from Heathrow International Airport at approximately £160/$260. Please note that prices are subject to change without notice.
Using Public Transportation from Central London
Take the train from either London Victoria, London Charing Cross or London Waterloo East Stations.
London Victoria - Trains depart approximately every 30 minutes from 6:45 a.m. until 10:22 p.m.; travel time is approximately 2 hours.
London Charing Cross - Trains depart approximately every 30 minutes from 7:10 a.m. until 11:40 p.m.; travel time is approximately one hour, 50 minutes.
London Waterloo East - Trains depart approximately every 30 minutes from 7:13 a.m. until 5:39 p.m.; travel time is approximately one hour, 50 minutes.
On arrival at Dover Priory, take a taxi to Dover Cruise Terminal 2; the terminal is approximately 5 minutes from the station, subject to traffic conditions.
Please note that all prices and train service times are subject to change without notice. Guests should check online for the most up-to-date pricing and travel information.

:worship: I'm always amazed at what you find on the DCL website because I never find anything like this. Thanks for sharing... and I'm really good usually at these things but I must be lazy or something when I look at Disney stuff.

From the questions here, you are not the only one who missed it, I found it in the planning centre.

Can't understand why they bring Waterloo East into the equation at all. :confused3

Nor can I it just will confuse everyone, its on the Charring Cross to London Bridge line, so why??? And then say get a taxi there, when you don't need to, either, as the Dover train stops at London Bridge, and even if it didn't, you can hop on nearly every other train to Waterloo East.

-No research!!!

thanks Andrew. I don't really want the evening canal tour or the ballet. I also don't want to be sitting around on the ship from 4:30 on (don't really care about dinner if I can be out in the port instead - I guess DCL is assuming everyone will want dinner on board) and a private 2 day tour is not doable. I might have to look into whether there is some sort of small private tour that will just go do something in the evening.

I would suggest that you post about this on your cruise meets thread and see if you can link up with others to do a private tour, with the operator of mine, I will save money on DCL's trips and do more, with a private guide, they look after the entry to Russia.

We appear to be getting back approx 7.30pm each day, so may/may not miss dinner, not bothered about that, -room service etc.

But do not feel there isn't an option there is, get a group together on your cruise meets even to go to the ballet or an evening tour it will be light till late in the evening and some places are open to 8pm.

I read about the dinner rotations on your link Andrew...can I request which rotation I want?
Also is there anyone out there that is going to get a VISA on their own for Russia and do it themselves? :confused3

Anyone can request a dinner rotation, as I have a suite hopefully it will be honoured, I have gone for PLA, as it hits more of the formal nights where I want to be. Its not perfect, you miss Pirates night in Parrot Cay, and one semi formal isn't in Lumiere's.

Put in a request, knowing it is a request.. its not guaranteed. You do this to DCL direct or your TA if used.

Have you looked into the logistics of getting your own visa? It's not very easy, very pricey and I believe you have to have a sponsor. Plus the port is not tourist friendly, it's a working port and the entrance to the port is about 2 miles away. You would have to arrange for transport to meet you at the entrance since taxis or buses won't be waiting there to pick up people.

We are a family of 4 on the June 12 Baltic (DS16, DD9)--looking forward to a great adventure! The devil is in the details--so a shout out to Andrew and others in the know:

1. Andrew: what tour company are you using? Will they pick you up up close to the ship? We are interested in this option--and I assume from what you said there would be no visa requirement as the tour company is your sponsor (as would be Disney for their tours); but do they recommend you get one anyway?
2. From what I have read on this board site, and from other sources including Rick Steves' excellent Baltic book--seems like the best port for all day excursions with DCL is Helsinki--get out into the country a bit etc. Museums are generally closed on Mondays--and we are in Oslo on Monday, so there goes my hope of seeing one of the "scream" paintings at the National Gallery! Would the HOHO be a good option for Oslo, or is it pretty walkable? (Steves' map indicates it would be)
3. If it were up to me I'd have at least an overnight in Copenhagen, with two days there--and an evening at Tivoli (although given the long days maybe that wouldn't matter). With such a limited time in Copenhagen, would the HOHO for the afternoon make sense? (We thought the early entry into Tivoli made sense with DCL).

Thanks for your tips everyone!

All the tour companies in StP will pick you up outside the immigration hut. It's a commercial port so they have to pick you up there.
There is no need to get your own Visa if you are going with a tour company that will provide a 'blanket visa' as part of your tour.

We are using Anastasia for our tour in St Petersburg.

Hi all.

I often get a high number of PM's always pleased to help, -but had a lot recently, on the St Petersburg private tours.

Now I have been asked not to publish my itinerary on the Internet, and therefore I have respected that request by the tour operator.

However,I have found their service and planning exceptional and would recommend anyone contact them directly, they know their stuff and are most helpful.

My cruise meets thread is very quiet. I'm really not interested in touring with someone's family as a solo - would rather go with a big group. My friend may not want to see the same things I do, so signing us both up for the same tour probably won't work too well, we need to be able to split up. So, ship's tours for us. I'll hold off and maybe will cave and do the evening canal tour just to get off the ship. What I'm hoping for is that the walking or shopping excursions will have some later times.

I'd just like to avoid being in St. Petersburg the first day with it being light out late and having to spend most of it on the ship. I won't know anything until we get times for the shore excursions though.
