The 2010 Baltic Thread--Cruise Tips and Planning

Did most places take credit cards or did you need more cash? I still haven't figured out how much cash and if I need to exchange it ahead of time. We are not sticking with DCL for most excursions so I just didn't know what to do about money? Any suggestions would be great!!!!

The big places like museums take credit cards. I would have some walking around money. The HOHO buses did not take credit cards you needed cash for that. We took the train to Dover and a taxi to the ship which was so easy. I told DH that looking back if I could do over I would have local cash when getting off the ship and look for an ATM once in town.

We are still in London until Monday. We are off for our Stonehenge, Salisbury and Bath tour today and the weather is lovely.

Does the boat take travelers checks? I was thinking I would just exchange a little money on the boat before each destination into that countries currency.

Is Warnemunde close to the dock? We are DIY that day and thought we would just walk into town and ATM some Euros before we head over to a Bier Garten.

Again thanks for all the great info. We sure appreciate it!!!

I'm not sure if they will take travelers checks but I don't see why they wouldn't.

Warnemunde is only about a 5 minute stroll from the dock (head for the train station opposite the ship and go through the underpass) so you will be fine DIY.

I'm going to try and race through the rest of the navigators and maps today so here's day 2.

I've also started my trip report and you can find the index here. I'll update it as I post the other days.

Here's Day 3

And the shopping map for Oslo

As I posted before the shops at the cruise terminal are very small and cramped so, if you can, I would do your shopping as early as you can before the crowds get there.

Have fun on the trip - we're doing Stonehenge, Bath & Windsor with Evans Evans tours, so I'd love to hear how it goes

Thanks for all the great info. I have declared it pre-packing day much to my children's dismay. I think they think packing just magically occurs. We leave in one week so I want to start getting things together. I hope the good weather continues for everyone over the pond. Have fun!:yay::yay::yay:

Just seen this article on the Disney Blog regarding the inaugural cruise ceremonies at the ports.

There was a nice display of the plaques and gifts next to the Guest Services desk on the ship which I got photos of.

Great trip report.

How was the hydrofoil yout took to the Peterhof fountains? My ds9 and I get motion sick on small boats and I'm a bit worried about it. I plan to take bonine but just wanted to know how much "movement" you really felt. We've been okay on ferry boats and on cruise ships.

Hydrofoil is actually a very smooth ride. My daughter and I are both very prone to motion sickness and we were just fine. I would not worry about this at all.

Mike, it's a great trip report:thumbsup2
Smart writing it up in a document first-gotta remember to do that.

I noticed you wrote something about the river cruise on the first night in St Petersburg not adding much over the Anastasia Tour. Can you elaborate a bit more on that?

We have a river cruise added to the end of our Anastasia tour as well (neither with DCL) but I'm assuming it would be the same as what you had. Is it more of a boat party rather than seeing more sites? Now a boat party with my DIS friends can be fun too;), but I can see if you were expecting to see more sites that you would be disappointed.

We did a private 2-day city tour and saw all the must-see tourist sites. The canal tour is a made-for-tourists-looking-to-spend-money trap IMO. I you are doing a city tour already, the canal tour is just a boat ride...and a not very comfortable one at that. We did not see anything via the canal tour that we did not see on the day cruise. And since the canal cruise started at 7 pm, we had to cut our private tour a little short, go back thru immigation, back on the ship, meet up with our canal tour and then get back off the ship again.

They did have a 3-person music show that was kinda fun...but that was the only redeeming value of the canal tour IMO.
