As a good vacation planner and a good Dad, I spent a lot of time here and elsewhere trying to identify the best area to request a room so that my two little kids and my wife wouldn't have to walk so much and we'd have the most convenient and enjoyable possible vacation.

I also know that requesting your intent rather than requesting a specific building or room will have the best chance of success ... it allows the room assigner to really know what you want (in other words, if you request a certain building but that building is already full, the room assigner can't know why you requested that building and will just give you any old room).

So I put a request on my reservation for "close to bus and food court."

We flew in at 10 p.m., got dropped off by Disney's Magical Express at 11 p.m. It being very late in the day, pickings were slim and we were assigned a room at the far end of Building 2, which, looking at the map, made me think our room was somewhere in Central Georgia. I was disappointed but figured there was nothing I could do. I saddled up the wife and 6 year old and 4 year old ready to trudge to our room at 11:15 p.m. with our carry-ons after a long day of travel.

What a delight to realize that this "far away" room was exactly a 2-MINUTE-WALK (I timed it) from the front desk, and that included the elevator ride up to the 3rd floor!!! IT WAS GREAT!!!

Later in the trip, I timed the farthest walk in the resort, a walk from the far end of Building 1 to the door of the food court -- 3 minutes 20 seconds. Fantastic!!!

Almost every time I am on this board I learn something usefull for my upcoming (18 days away) trip!!!! :cool1:

THANKS!

I have a silly question or 2... Does anyone know what the wattage of the hair dryers are? (1875,1500?) I know stupid but with a mane like mine I need to know!

Also, is the internet still $9.95 per 24 hours?

Last question, Can someone please tell me which buildings have NEVER had smoking in them? My son is severly asthmatic and I need a truly smoke free room!

Thanks!:thumbsup2

Great question! We need a never smoked in room, too. My DS is the same, and the smell (it never truly goes away) gives me a migrane after a day of two. I'm so glad you asked!!!

I never checked on the wattage but I have VERY thick, past my shoulders length hair and I didn't have a problem with the dryers. Yes, the internet is still $9.95/24 hrs (which I think sucks!!). I'm not sure about rooms that have NEVER been smoked in but I believe that any rooms that are designated non-smoking have been that way since the last refurbishment. If you get a room that you can notice has been smoke in, definitely request a room change. Unfortunately, although Disney designates a room as non-smoking, some people still do as they please and smoke in them.

Does anyone have any info. on the pirate cruise that leaves from POR? Our boys did the one at CBR last year and loved it. I called today to reserve that one again, and the CM told me about the other one. I booked it instead, so I'm hoping it is just as good. Anyone know???:confused3

Can someone tell me about the bus service from POFQ to the parks? Does it share with other resorts, how long does it take to get to each park, etc? TIA!

Technically, it does share with other parks but in our entire 10 day visit, we only when to another resort once! And we used those buses EVERY day! Of course each park is different but it really isn't a long trip to any of them.

Why stay in your room. You are on vacation in Disney. They have an ESPN zone at the Boardwalk. Watch it there.

If you go to the ESPN zone make sure you get there early. We went there to watch a play-off game last year and it was so crowded we left.

I thought the bus service was great.

Technically speaking, POFQ shares buses with POR most of the time. The bus starts at POFQ's only bus stop, and then can go on to POR's 4 bus stops. There is an internal roadway between the two sister resorts.

However, on the 7 mornings when I took park buses from POFQ, we went into POR only twice. One of those two times, we stopped only at 1 stop within POR and then left for our destination. The other time, it did go around and make all the stops at POR. No big deal. Caribbean Beach Resort doesn't share buses but has 7 stops within its property. Coronado Springs Resort doesn't share buses but has 4 stops within its property.

On the way back "home" from the parks, buses stop first at POFQ and only then do they go on to the POR stops. So this is a great advantage for POFQ riders. At the Magic Kingdom bus area, POFQ and POR have separate "homeward bound" buses and bus stops every day after 3:00 p.m.

going off of what the above poster said, IIRC the POFQ bus goes all the way around POR when you are going to MGM and Epcot. That is, there are 4 stops instead of only 1. my wife and i thought the bus system was great. the waits were never more than about 10 minutes and once you got on a bus, it was only about 15 minutes or less to any park.

This should be an easy request. Similar to requesting a room for a disability. Just call or fax your hotel with the request directly. They'll know which rooms were never smoking, and accommodate you.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that the pool might be closed. Anyone have any onfo on this?

Here are the designated smoking areas http://www.wdwinfo.com/maps/PortOrleansMap.pdf I was really surprised that there were that many because in my entire trip, I never saw one person smoking!!

As for never smoked in rooms unfortunately no matter what the CM says, you can't know whether or not it's been smoked in until you're in the room and check for yourself (I've seen or smelled people smoking in designated non-smoking rooms before). Like I said in my last reply to this, if you enter the room and notice that it has been smoked in, promptly return to check-in and request another room, stating your reasons and that because of your son's sensitivity to smoke, you noticed it as soon as you entered the room.
