The “wet market”

in some of these diseases other animals are the vector... like a mosquito (West Nile).. or in this case of Lyme, the tick. It is the Lyme that affects both humans and dogs not as much as you catch Lyme from the dog. Someone else stated this earlier, but they are not always equally harmful. Transmission can vary too... contact with feces... salivia like rabies, it depends on what the particular 'icky' is.... as these zoonoitc diseases can be bacterial... viral... fungal... or even things like single cell protozoa which I think is Giardia.
OK - understood. Thanks again for clarifying that. :wave2:

I think they are supposed to have the breaks and follow the rules. But sanitation can still be a problem. I think this would be a bigger problem if there weren't rules and inspections! They probably aren't always followed. I always like to wash anything that might have been hand picked. But you never know if you are eating out!

There are specific rules that require that farm workers have access to toilets and hand washing facilities as well as reasonable chances to use them. I would think the typical setup will be portable moved from field to field as needed. I've seen them before. I've used similar setups, especially with the portable sinks with a water supply that needs to be pumped by foot. However, any operation with less than 10 workers is exempt. It's unlikely that larger operations can make do with that few people.

One issue would be that many farm workers are paid by the unit, so they would have an incentive to spend as much time working as possible. It might be an incentive to keep breaks as short as possible.

It also comes from people who are picking the produce, who aren't allowed bathroom breaks.

This is false information about the Salad Bowl of the World in Yuma, AZ, where there have been major problems....the source has been water from the canals. I can tell you from first hand observation every day traveling by the lettuce fields, that workers picking the produce are given bathroom breaks in porta potties that are close by with hand-washing stations that are larger than any found at an outdoor event that 1.000s attended. Those workers are also wearing heavy plastic apron, heavy gloves and work in shade. These workers are transported by bus with a trailer that has 3 porta potties and the large wash stations. All vehicle tires and undercarriages carrying the product are rinsed down with well water and then once again at the massive buildings that process the product. Tons of research on line is available that human contact in Salinas Valley , California and the Salad bowl of Arizona is not the cause of the e coli romaine incident. It is the water drawn from a canal that is applied by machine to the crops in the field

But how would going vegan help with the germs on veggies and fruits? Being clean and safe applies to anything we eat. I won’t let that affect what I like to eat! I just don’t think these wet markets or whatever they are called are clean or safe

A friend of mine who is originally from China believes that it came from a US government lab and was deliberately meant to target China as an economic weapon.
A friend of mine, who is a logical, sensible kind of guy, thinks it's pretty ludicrous to think covid-19 was created either by China or the US as a weapon.

Bizarre people have bizarre conspiracy theories about everything. I don't pay any attention to them, because in all these years I have never seen a single one of those silly theories actually turn out to be true.

Because most of the produce that is contaminated is being contaminated from animal agriculture run off. If we weren’t factory farming we wouldn’t have run off waste getting into our fields and water bodies that contaminate our food supply.

Factory farming is not clean or safe either.

I did hear a conspiracy theory recently that I couldn't just dismiss right away. That China released the virus intentionally to wreck the rest of the world economy and leaving themselves in position to capitalize. It would explain why the virus was bad in wuhan and only had minor effects in other parts of China. Like Beijing and Shanghai having almost no cases and deaths. They would have planned for years for this and inoculated the majority of the population, but left a sacrificial city to make it look like they got hit too. So now, while the rest of the world is shutting down, they are opening back up. They are positioned to buy stocks at rock bottom prices and be the only industrial supplier for many goods. It would explain the coverup too as they'd want it to spread as far as it could without people preparing for it. While I normally roll my eyes at conspiracy theories as they can be picked apart pretty quickly, this one doesn't fall right apart. The human in me finds it hard anyone would do that. But the cynic in me says that China is lying about their cases and deaths to the detriment to the rest of the world. If they are going to do that, what else would they do?

There's a huge emotional investment in trying to pin this on "someone else". And it's happening all over the world. But at this point it serves no practical purpose.

It would be important if there were any truth to it.

For example, the question of whether the WHO covered up some of China's actions -- IF TRUE -- would certainly be relevant, both regarding China and the WHO.

But the conspiracy theories are mostly pretty laughable...IMHO.
